Eric that is a tough call regarding holding a tournament during the age of COVID-19. I definitely understand your own personal dilemma moving forward and the consideration you need to do in order to put this event on. I hope you got all you needed from the poll.

I’m sorry that there won’t be a Shelter Cove tournament next year.  It had to be a difficult decision to make. Hopefully you will take people out individually during the summer months next year. Myself and a couple of friends are making plans to spend a couple of days at Shelter Cove. See you next year.

Not a decision that you took lightly, I'm sure. Thank you for your thoughtful stewardship of this event as always, Eric.

Are there now indoor kayak fishing tournaments? I don't see how this could be a serious concern

just be smart about it

Thanks, Paul.  The way I'll do that is to not have the event in 2022.

It's not about an outdoor risk at all.  It's about bringing 100's of people to a small community up here where the hotels/inns, deli, store and any other indoor areas will be crowded with people who I brought to town.  It's way different than a day event on SF or Monterey Bay.

We don't know how things will play out once the omicron variant spreads through the US - it's spreading quickly wherever it's taken hold, according to reliable news sources.

In the beginning of all this there were people who jumped right on the "you're scared" bandwagon - apparently because that somehow empowered those people.  If risk assessment and acting prudently based on the available information makes you scared, you're probably not venturing out onto the ocean on a kayak...

The bottom line for me may be that I do not wish to deal with people who act in ways that defy logic and good sense, and it's become apparent that we have hordes of those types in this country.

I do plan to continue guiding at the Cove.  Bringing in one, two or three guests at a time isn't something that concerns me like bringing in 100's.

Completely respect your decision Eric, and wish you all the best in 2022!  I'm going to be heading there at some point, low key, and hope to hook up with you then if only to have a beer with a good friend.

Smart move

Never having been to GS I imagined it being a small affair but if it’s hundreds of people it would make for a natural superspreader event. If I was in your shoes it’s not something I would want to dwell on before during or after it was all said and done

The general store is currently on reduced hours because of covid exposure at the store.

Sometimes it's really hard to tell who those people are.  Other times it's really easy.  And sometimes we misidentify them because of our own biases.  Sometimes we have to at least consider the possibility that it's us.

My GS shirts have holes in them already Eric but they should last another 1 or 2 years. Don’t think they’ll survive 3 years though. Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year Eric. See you when all is clear.

Put patches on those shirts

Or if you’re old like me you don’t worry about what anybody thinks just wear them as is
