I'm starting to get worried about unsafe yakkers attempting to find rockfish with these restrictions. Multiple posts in FnS going up about: how far to 50 fathom, or closest spot to rockfish?

Joe could we add a section regarding safety for nearshore boaters? If only this restriction had a slot like 10-50 fathoms or something. We are all mentioning never seeing quillback below 100' deep anyways. Just impossible to enforce I think is the issue.

Craftsmen's Corner / Re: Mirage Drive Idler Cable Upgrade DIY (Simple)
« on: August 15, 2023, 02:14:45 PM »
My buddy had tried to re solder and crimp the cable to the bolt end of the idler cable and it failed on the water this weekend.

He had brought some spare cable and some aluminum crimps but was unable to properly crimp on the water, in a similar fashion that you are showing. I ended up tying some emergency paracord while we were drifting that kept him running the rest of the weekend lol.

interesting seeing you use both a lefty and righty.  Been tempted to get a right just to make on-handed reeling possible on my non favored side.

I prefer to have both reel handles facing me if I can. If I’m doubled up, I can play the other rod one-handed. Helps convert a few double ups. A double up can easily turn a slow day into a limit in no time.

I have that same setup now, I like both reels facing me forsure. I even had a lefty and a righty when we went dab and hali fishing too just to give one arm a break lol.

Introductions / Re: New Member - Shelter Cove

Our local fb group LCKA just had an event down there. Rock fishing was good but socked in fog and swift current from the south made it tough to stay on the fish or get anywhere. We spent all saturday morning trying to make it to the whistle, picked up a few nice fish then came back and were EXHAUSTED.

Dont even drop anything in the harbor, its filthy with silvers and some kings feeding on the large school of anchovy. I tried for cali hali and thresher but couldn't find any. I would just troll some squid in the reef to catch vermillion and rockfish and keep the kings off. it was easiest to catch fish just out front were the current wasn't so bad. Make sure u have gps and backup because we were socked in.

General Fishing Tips / Re: Broken teeth on Hobie Kickup Fin Mirage
« on: August 08, 2023, 04:10:29 PM »
Forsure the teeth don't break on their own usually, mine were sheard off when the rollers failed and pitted the drum inside. When that slid to a halt my teeth failed.

I have since replaced the roller bearings with PVC pipe as a bushing again. I couldn't replace the roller bearings with fresh cut delrin rod due to all the pitting going on in that track. Pvc and some grease has been pretty bullet proof so far tho luckily.

I really want to try these, but have no experience running the cables so opted to just drill some SS screws into the drum as replacement teeth. 3 was enough to have contact with the chain at all times and its holding up great.

I received the email on July 28th regarding this rule change for Aug 7th.

I honestly haven't caught a quilback in years, but I haven't been to deep rocks in a boat in a long time either.

General Talk / Re: Eureka suggestions

For halibut grounds in north bay (channels) there is the Englund marine public boat launch in eureka. For Fairhaven grounds there is a beach you can drag out to called Fairhaven beach, and then fields landing for south bay.

There is even a bridge you can launch at on somoa blvd over the mad river slough.

you can make some wiggle room by pushing the longer line in, the short end will pop out after that.

I don't actually have a downrigger, just a line clip with a weight on it.

It has been pretty successful at getting my presentation down to the fish but it's just a hassle to unclip while fighting a fish.

Got out to whiskey sunday morning to practice some kokenee fishing. Following your guide I found a nice school of fish and connected on 4 bites, losing that many as well.

I've been trying to use this downrigger rod I bought and just clipping a weight to the line after a setback, but in the process of unclipping the weight I seem to lose a lot of fish, still fun to score fish on that noodle tho. Thanks for all the help! Pink hoochie killed it out there.

Here is a preview of the before/after

I've been using the hand loop technique for fg knots and I purchased some cheap knot tightening rods on amazon and they work great, makes the knot turn color all the way through and has built my trust in them. No more cutting into my fingers with braid lol

Hobie Kayaks / Re: Amazon Hobie Idler Cable
« on: July 12, 2023, 08:04:54 PM »
Thanks for the tip, I didnt notice I thought the red sheath went all the way into the crimp.

Hobie cables have that exposed area that always breaks but ive been adding marine goop to them to try and protect that area.

Once my idler comes in I'll have all amazon cables on my primary 180 drive.

FYI Hoodoo idler cables DO NOT FIT the hobie 180, half inch too short! :|

Safety First / Re: Get this Spyderco knife!

Bladhq.com sale on spydercos!

Look for "salt"
H1/H2 steel for a softer steel but absolutely rust proof. Sharpens easy

Lc200n steel for just a nicer grade and still rust proof.

I currently have a small dragonfly and it works great gills and brain spiking. Just got the native 5 on sale here. Lightweight and you can take them swimming!

I've had the wharncliff, and the Para 2 but those are at the bottom of the ocean now, still shiney and rust proof i assume... tied a small float to my current knife :)
