General Talk / Re: Kayak w trolling motor registration
« on: May 09, 2020, 06:57:26 PM »
I was talking to someone yesterday and they said it was $10?
$37 / $65
Even year / Odd year
Don’t they renew every two years?
Renewed every 2 years on the odd year.  Those costs are for 1st time registering. registration upkeep costs are less i believe. i should know because I've owned too many boats but I dont remember which ive paid back date fees on or not lol

General Talk / Re: Saw on coastside

“...Got back to the ramp (edit: in Alameda) and it was a cluster f***. Kayakers just think they can sneak right in front of the line and load/unload their kayaks in the middle of the ramp. No common sense. Tried to talked to them politely but they think they own the ramp. I guessed that’s what happened when most of the ramps are closed so we will be seeing people with no common sense at the ramp.”

Thought I would pass it along. Sure, this guy is coming at this w a certain attitude, and from his side only, but let’s do our part to share good will and proper etiquette on (and off) the water. We are all fishermen and fisherwomen on sea faring vessels and should abide by similar rules. Especially in this sensitive SIP environment, last thing we need is to be singled out as a group w “no common sense”.  I have fought the mountain bike trail access issues for too long and the animosity between user groups there is terrible. Don’t want to see it like that on the water, ever!

I responded to the comment w some positive support for kayakers so hopefully it’s received well!

can you link the Coastside topic?   its a bummer that he felt overstepped.  Hopefully both parties were able to take something away from it and be a little more self aware

Do you really need to register?
My yak is 10 years old. Purchased out of state. I no longer have receipt. Never needed to register before in other states. Just added trolling motor.

In California, it is written in law as so

Gearing Up and Rigging Up / Re: Thoughts on first fish finder?
« on: May 07, 2020, 10:35:34 AM »
Any thoughts on the portable ones. Stuff [self]battery powered, balls that wifi to your phone. More simple low-key ways to map the bottom without needing to rig a motorcycle battery under a hatch and poke holes in the hull?

a striker 4 and hook2 4x are just about $100 new. lowrance has this bobber thingy you could leash and "troll" with the kayak. seems simpler and cheaper. what am I missing?

I had the I Bobber and it was total piece of junk haha. i never even got it to work. For the same price you can get a garmin Striker on sale.

Also worth noting that size is your preference. Some people like big screen, but i prefer my small 4" striker to my 7" Garmin Echomap because the extra screen doesnt really help me.. i get all the same data on the small one (minus charts, but i know where I kayak and have a breadcrumb trail, so i still know exactly where i am), and the screen size doesnt increase my ability to see fish vs baitball or sand vs rock bottom, just the resolution of the specific things- your transducer determines what you pick up on the display (like plugging a N64 into a 4K tv).  the 7" is perfect on my boat, but i really am much happier with my 4" on the yak than the 7".  It also doesnt get in the way because i fly fish sometimes and when salmon fishing, it always seem like theres too much going on

For SB plugging I use 30# on my big rod and 20# on my smaller one.  For RF, 40# is the strongest I am comfortable having to breaking off in my Revo 13 :P

Gearing Up and Rigging Up / Re: Share pictures of your Kayak Setup!
« on: April 20, 2020, 09:06:05 AM »
I'm a fan of simplicity. On my first yak (the yellow OK) i had a milk crate, portable fish finder, and 1 rod holder. that got the job done most of the the time!!

Once I got pedals, I added a downrigger, but kept the same fish finder (now just ram mounted instead of crammed between my legs) and kept the same 1 rod holder and milk crate.

I like to leave my wheels in the car if I can but I'll strap them to the crate if need be.  Works out alright so far!!

I’ve searched here there and everywhere to find intel on installing the hobie anchor trolley system on my 2017 revo 13...

The docs are for an outback...

Thanks in advance...

I used the docs and just drilled the needed holes and it worked fine. just make sure when you drill the holes for the little plastic standoffs, you put them in a place you can get a nut on the back of.

Whoa didn't realize that we weren't supposed to be posting pics- Sorry Allen. Not my first instinct to think when on a kayak fishing forum.  I suppose I'll refrain from posting until its allowed again and just back date everything then.. (hopefully someone will inform me of that reopening too :smt044).   Thought the colors were gorgeous and not too common.
