Gearing Up and Rigging Up / When is a 2-speed reel worth it?
« on: February 28, 2023, 07:43:19 PM »
Generally I fish 100 fow or less, and really haven't felt that a two speed reel would be of benefit in my arsenal.  But with the new depth restrictions I started re-thinking that, maybe if I want to go deep I should invest in a 2-speed.  If I bought one I'd probably go with an Avet, still looking for a low profile reel for kayaking but with the 2 speed.  Is there any other benefit to a 2-speed other than fishing deep?  Just curious if there are other applications for them.

General Talk / Snow!

Crazy waking up to snow on my deck this morning, and now it's actually snowing pretty good and big flakes.  First time I have ever seen it snow this far down the mountain.

Gearing Up and Rigging Up / Anyone used Genesis Maps?
« on: February 12, 2023, 06:34:57 AM »
https://www.genesismaps.com/

Doing some research on FF's I came across this on Lowrances website oddly, pointing to a free map software.  Creates free maps out of your sonar logs?  Probably better for boaters covering more water than kayakers, but curious if anyone has been using it.

AOTY / Wrote an app to txt top 10 AOTY
« on: February 08, 2023, 05:54:42 PM »
Was bored at work today and thought I'd make it so I don't have to login to get the current AOTY standings each day.  So wrote a simple scraper program to gather the first top 10 AOTY and text it to me.   :smt044.

Congratulations to Corey for winning this years AOTY with a top score of 1704.5 pts!  He was also the winner in 2021, earning himself a rare streak in winning back to back years making Angler Of The Year history!

Of course congratulations to all the people that joined and played this past year, it was a fun competition with some very very nice catches to brag about.  It makes for an interesting year of fishing and I enjoyed watching everyone's journey through their catches and reports!  You could certainly tell the top players were on each others heels trying to gain levels this year! :smt044

Here is the standing for 2022 http://aoty.norcalkayakanglers.com/pages/list2022results

Anglers, chime in on what your favorite part of 2022 AOTY was, share the stoke for kayak fishing!  Remember everyone it's free this year as well, so no reason not got sign up and give it a try!  You wont find a better way to motivate yourself to seek out new challenges and upgrades of your personal bests.

For myself, it was really good year that I got to test out some new fishing techniques and learn a few new ways to catch some delicious points.  I scored my PB kokanee, my first ever brown trout, my first salmon in 10 years, and my PB lingcod!

Gearing Up and Rigging Up / Shout out to Kokatat!
« on: January 31, 2023, 01:29:04 PM »
I manged to do something dumb and ripped my sleeve while taking off my drysuit a few months ago.  Finally contacted Kokatat and sent some pictures of the tear and they replied back that they would fix it free of charge if I had the standard 45$ test/repair treatment.

Stumbled on this page showing a few parks closed due to flooding like Lake Del Vale, Chabot and a couple other parks.  Thought I'd share it: https://www.ebparks.org/alerts-closures

I'm looking for a better tow vehicle than my 4Runner for pulling something a bit bigger than the tiny trailer I currently have.  The 4Runner is great on gas and gets me many places, but it frankly sucks for towing and it's capacity is pretty low.  I'm not looking to buy big trailer, but something more like an R-Pod 17 or smaller, something that is bit more comfortable than just a bed which is what I have now.

I've been just looking at inexpensive used car choices that would fit the bill and came down with some basic towing stats up to at least 5,000lbs I think would be good enough.  trying for less than 12 years old, V8 4X4 decent brakes and tow capacity, I come up with some cheaper options on Craigslist like Chevy Subrban or Tahoe, Cadillac Escalade for about 10-15k but  something like a Tundra or F150 would be a bit more.

Any suggestions on other vehicles to search for towing?  Have anything you have been thinking of getting rid of?  Let me know!

My old Elite-4 DSI finally died this year, losing lots of waypoints and such sadly.  I did have a Elite-4 HDI and started finally using it which I do like except I was thinking a 5" screen would be better but saw that this 4.3" wide screen might be a good compromise:  https://www.amazon.com/Lowrance-HOOK2-4X-4-inch-Plotter/dp/B078561F1B/ref=sr_1_2?crid=1ZFG9IGES09OQ&keywords=HOOK%C2%B2%2B5x&qid=1673570670&sprefix=hook%2B5x%2Caps%2C305&sr=8-2&th=1

I was confused by what it said "GPS no mapping" though and was curious what it means. I've always liked the base maps that came in my simple Lowrance units without buying some add in sd card.  I'm not sure what it means by no mapping though, is that no "map" or no saving of waypoints, or what?

I'm not really willing to spend a lot of a FF, so the Hook2 seems closest to the old 4-X models I've used in the past.  I've not used anything else but Lowrance in the last 10 years, so curious if there are other brands people recommend for lower end units.

To me the only things that are really important are a reliable GPS with saving waypoints, seeing depth, structure, bait and a simple map on the GPS.  Don't really want to buy charts and such.  But if there was a good reliable way to offload waypoints from a more expensive unit, I might be down to spend more on it.
