PM reply sent, thanks Craig!  Yeah Alex, totally, these are getting harder to find, and the asking price keeps going up even for ones in so-so shape. I resisted selling it on CL because I wanted to pass it along to someone who understood the yak. NCKA FTW.

If I only had space  :smt013
Same, Johnny, same.

It's a salmon-killing machine, I can testify to that!   :smt001
That's a helluva day you all had up there Eric!  I gave salmon a try off Pt Reyes, launched from the Lifeboat house. but I ran outta steam after an hour or so and kept falling asleep. Clearly had no clue out there about salmon trolling from the yak.

It's in such good shape too!
Actually not bad shape at all, for the price, I was thinking someone would want it sooner. But I keep my car in the underground garage for all but a couple hours a week, so no harm in waiting.

Thanks for the feedback!

Kind of bummed that nobody has expressed any interest at $320 (if you don't mind me taking the GPS/mount off) in this very fine yak that is almost a blank slate ready to be outfitted, or just used as-is by a kid, spouse or friend who's never paddled before and wants to try out kayaking or kayak fishing.

This is an ideal first-time yak, frequently appearing on pros "top-10 all time" kayak lists, and Ocean Kayak stopped making this mold years ago so you can't even get them new. Lightweight, easy to carry, and is fast and fun to paddle. It's the roadster of SOT sea kayaks and was super fun to fish from.

I have nowhere to store it and even though it's been a year since my open heart surgery I am still trying to get my strength back. Hate to part with the boat but I need to get it off the roof of my car. Thanks for your consideration, feel free to PM or reply with questions.

Well my (inglorious) comeback has been thwarted - couple of health glitches last year which I am recovering fine but slowly from, plus I had to move to a new apartment with noplace good to store a yak (that I don't think I'd use this year anyway).

The sell-or-store-on-my-car-roof argument was a sad short one. Yak is in good shape with caveats:

- is a little faded which you can't see in the photos. Trust me it is.
- the PO put a ~ 3/8" hole bout halfway up the tankwell forward wall for an electrical cord, I didn't care about the hole but I'm sure it's fillable if it helps you sleep out there
- no major hull gouges, some typical scratches and a (minor) scuffed area from where it was leaned for storage (see photo)
- I gave it a PE cleaning & sun-protection spa treatment a couple of years ago but IMO it's prolly due again, doesn't look as purty as she did 2 years ago
- has drain plug, hatch gasket is in great shape
- $380 as pictured, or $320 without the GPS/mount.

Obvs the folding cart in photos is not included, I was just using it to hold the yak up.

I mounted (3 screws) a Garmin GPSMap 76 which has only been used a couple times and is in excellent condition, works great - a durable GPS, great AA battery life, doesn't get in the way right there, lets you pick a dedicated FF. Mount folds back for transport. Or I can remove those and you can pay $320 if you prefer. Tbh I'd like to keep them; maybe you can put something else in their place.

I got a PM asking how long the yak is - it's 14'9" in length, and a narrow 26" wide, weighing just 58lbs. I carried it on my shoulder to and from surf launching without much trouble. This mold was the first yak I ever paddled. With others, I missed the feeling of "being one with the kayak" that the SPTW provided. Probably best for a younger person who is under 6'3/220lbs. It can get a little tight in the seat otherwise.

Separately...

I also have a terrific boater's landing net - a StowMaster TS120X - really big, 30x32 and 42" deep. Barely used. New cost in the $200's, for you or your friend with the boat, this one is $90 (see last pic below).

Feel free to reply or PM me!

Thanks Eric and Darius!  I'm good with the rack now, got a beat up one that says Volvo on it for cheap enough.

The yak I am getting has to be completely outfitted as it is pretty much unmodded except for a small hole for a cord that was used for a battery powered motor, and I will plug that hole.  I hope to be out fishing this summer, probably most often Berkeley flats but since I have a rack I can keep, I can go wherever if time allows.

Looking forward to seein y'all again. Appreciate the wb! And yeah that was a fun and interesting day for sure, Eric. Especially for your first day out!

Exactly, I was expecting to do the pool noodles thing, that seemed easiest and most vehicle-friendly.  However I decided to put off some bills (put off from April to May and now to June) because I was able to drive to Monterey and the South Bay to cobble together a proper Thule rack. Used fit kit, podiums, bars and locks, it's a little rough but it was $185 total so I won't complain too much. Adding the yak makes a total of $615 so that for a yak and a rack, with $110 left for gas money to Mendo and food for the next week.  It works.

Thanks for everyone's great suggestions and offers to help!

That's pretty amazing Charles. I'd call it a feat for sure. Sadly I don't trust my rigging ability enough to try that. I have a memory foam mattress I can fold in half under the yak and ratchet tie-down through the car windows, if worse comes to worse. I'd really just prefer to borrow someone's Thule fixpoint rack, if possible. Thanks though!

Hey Scott!  Yeah hopefully paddling is like riding a bike and I won't need lessons from you again. But I'm sure you know what boat I am heading up to Fort Bragg to get, so all bets are off. This time it's in yum yum yellow, tho. Safety and all.

As you and The Cook said, the foam will work, I would just need to figure out if I can find tie points on my car and make it so the rope doesn't mess up the finish. It is still a last resort, though. Hoping I can just find a regular Thule rack to borrow if I can get the fit-kit for my car on my own.

9
I will def keep the foam blocks in mind, thanks!

I am not sure the Yakima will work with my car after all, even after I spent $100 on new Q-clips. Yakima doesn't want them used on cars made after 2016, and mine's a 2018 Mazda6.

If it is a Thule fixpoint rack, the foot packs are cross bars would be all I'd need for the trip. There's a fit kit on CL down in Monterey that would work for me.

10
They stopped making the Q-clips after 2016 and have transitioned to "base clips" or "baseline" attachments.  By searching reviews and forums I figured out that the Q-clips I need are Q99.

I am not sure if anyone local will carry Q-clips but I'll see. So far the only Q99 clips I can find online are on the east coast and would not get here before Friday.

11
Mark, thanks, that is incredibly kind of you. Although you would not need to give them away if I could just use them for the day on Friday. For the clips, what I could do is take what you have over to racknroad in San Rafael and see what they say I need.  Do you think that is a decent plan?

I really won't need a rack for a couple of months or more. Gotta outfit the yak, so I don't see hitting the Berkeley flats til mid-summer.

12
Thanks guys, appreciate the offer and advice, but unfortunately it is a 3-hour freeway drive home (after I pick it up). I didn't really go into this with a plan, obviously. But I need to get back on the water.

I should probably add, I would be totally fine picking up/dropping off a loaner anywhere from Monterey to Modesto to Santa Rosa - that kind of radius.

13
I need to go pick up a yak on Friday and I am without a roof rack and I am embarrassingly broke.

So I think I can get a fit kit that works for me, and I would just need the 460 series feet and cross bars 50"+.   I will pick up and drop back off, if you can part with them from Thurs-Sat...

Shot in the dark, but just asking.  Thank you!

Will be launching at BH with a buddy Sunday around 7:30am.   Hope Darius and some others are gonna show up...  Not been on yak in about 4 yrs, could be funny to watch.  Sorry, didn't see the original post (ok true, didn't post my own either.. my bad).

oh, I should have just "bumped" it!  Guess it got buried a few pages back since last post....  Got a couple PMs too..

Better just ring me for availability at this point..  510-919-0632 ~ craig
