Hey Troy,

I haven't dove that area in a long time, but when I lived in SD, I did dive the north county beaches a few times.  Check for kelp and surfers as that will indicate reef.  I've seen calico, halibut and occassionally smaller WSB in the shallow reef at San Elijo and Cardiff beaches.

Good luck,
Nate

Thanks, yea I use to live down there and had a brother that speared. Will most likely drag my other brother out on a paddle board so that I have somewhere with me out there. I've checked and there are a few kelp beds I could swim out to. Hopefully find something good while I'm down there.

I'm going to be in Encinitas down in socal during the 4th of july week. I'm planning on diving while I"m down there, let me know if any of you will be there as well or if you have any suggestions on where I should go out. I have Navionics so I can see where some good spots will be but happy to take any suggestions. Thanks all

I surf and kayak in the area and the visibility usually looks pretty poor, but some days are better than others. I did see a report of a 36" ling that was taken in the area a few years ago. I think it was wintertime when the females move in shallow, but can't remember for sure. Post up a report if you go and good luck.

Cheers,
Brad

Talked with a friend and about a month ago or so he caught a 30" ling out there. Was out there last week, viz wasn't that bad, but kelp and eel grass have taken over and near impossible to check out some of the holes

Definitely go professional route for fixes if you can. If you are trying to save money perhaps you could have a tailor sew any tears and then you could patch up with some wetsuit glue, however finding the pinhole might be difficult.

Welcome. When the water warms up, the halibut fishing in SC should pick up.

I'd suggest getting a gaff to deal with landing all of those halibut you're going to catch this summer...

Thanks, yea I've picked up a gaf specifically for dealing with halibut

Hey Erza,

Welcome! I am new to spearfishing as well I've been going out for maybe the last 6 months or so, I am Santa Cruz based. I'd definitely be interested in going out to some spots and playing hookie lol

Welcome!

Similar to what the other Troy said, get a pedal one, if you can invest in it even a motorized one but at that point you might as well look for skiffs. I bought my first yak last year, Vibe Sea Ghost 130, it's an amazing kayak but its a standard paddle kayak which get tiring pretty fast. I think the biggest downside is when you are actually fishing and need to move around.

Welcome again, hope you find a yak soon

Hi Troy, welcome to the madness.
I'm Sean. I am up in Bonny Doon, so fish the north coast SC/San Mateo during the summer.
Keep an eye out in the hookups section, as the season heats up there will be some good invites in there.

Great to hear, I don't have a Facebook or anything so I will keep an eye open on that. Yea the bite is a little slow right now but its great to be getting back out there

I'm just getting into spear fishing but I have been diving around these parts since I live here. Can confirm that the visibility is pretty much non-existent, but there is some decent structure where you can find some good fish

Hey GooseEgg,

Have you stuck with it?

I'm new to the sport, I'm trying to get into this more seriously. How have your experiences been so far?

Welcome, for tires what others have recommended are good. There always might be some tweaking you need to do to make it ideal

Hey all,

My name is Troy. I live in Santa Cruz I primarily target lings and rocks, I surf cast when I don't have the energy of hauling the yak around. Also starting to target halis but no luck yet! I got a vibe sea ghost 130, still need to get a fish finder setup in that bad boy, right now I just use my navionics app while i'm out on the water lol. I only have been seriously fishing for the past few years but I have grown up all my life by the ocean, I also surf on a pretty regular basis.

I also recently started getting into spear fishing as well, definitely would be interested in finding some dive buddies here to get more time down below.
