General Fishing Tips / Re: Slow pitch for salmon?
« on: June 24, 2022, 02:24:22 PM »
I have a chovie flatfall 4oz., one barbless hook per end...legal and legit?  Would love to hook up on the edge of a bait ball on the slow pitch rod...what say you? :smt006

I think the old timers use to jig for salmon on the drift until the rules changed to circle hooks if youíre drifting. On a peddle kayak Iím sure you can trooch and jig and get away with using J hooks.

spirit of the law :)

CA Regulations / Re: Domesticated Game Birds
« on: June 22, 2022, 03:35:45 PM »
I had the foolish idea that I could raise California quail in my yard and tame them down.
Wrongo.
I bought a couple pairs from a local guy. We approached his backyard aviary  from about 100 yards away and they went ballistic as soon as they saw us, flying up and crashing into the wire.
I successfully kept a couple pairs but they NEVER tamed down. I put a chick under a chicken thinking that might tame them down. No dice. That chicklet was gone like a bullet as soon and as fast as he could go.
I raised chicks to 2nd generation out of an incubator.. and they were still wild as can be.
I switched to Coturnix, for much better results. those birds are positively cuddly.
But I gave up on Valley Quail as they never tamed down a bit for me.

that's very similar to our experiance as well.... We had named one "trouble" after it disassembled the interior of our incubator in its first minutes of life.

Gearing Up and Rigging Up / Re: Retying leaders and replacing line
« on: June 20, 2022, 03:02:17 PM »
i am planning to replace my line this year. 3 years and i was kinda worried with the "fuzziness" i see on it.. not sure what line i used, i think 832? i will probably replace with powerpro.

as for leaders, every leader i fish gets retired, every one gets retired after 1 fish, and i retie all gear every season, but i use FIFO (first in first out) method for tackle, so i usually don't have season old rigs.

And just how many smolts will survive the onslaught of stripers looking for an easy meal?

Many??? by swimming???

Not all will make it past the voracious striper. Not all will survive the rockfish either, or the large salmon passing through cal city. Not all will survive the the seals, birds, or even the drive itself. Some will die with the drop into the water, or the waves that meet them there.

But tell me this; why not try? Some (a lot actually) will survive.

Salmon and striper have coexisted for over 150 years. Striper are naturalized, meaning they play an integral role in our ecosystem, and could cause an imbalance if removed, native or not.

Before we dammed rivers beyond recognition and diverted water flows for whatever purpose they have been diverted for- worthy or not, these fish lived together WELL.  6 foot long fish, 100lbs each coexisted with unbelievable numbers about them.

God forbid they try (and succeed) to help

General Talk / Re: Any Honda Mechanic?
« on: June 15, 2022, 11:42:19 AM »
I need help installing Cooler Kit (ATF) for 2021 Honda Pilot ASAP. Today or tomorrow.

I'm not a honda mechanic, but if you can, I would also flush your transmission before installing it to get any crud out before plumbing in the intercooler.
