Installed the converter into my Sharkshield, and then added wiring so the plug is by the scupper hole. The unit is designed for scuba divers not for kayaks so normally it sits upside down when placed in the scupper.

I removed most of the Velcro attachment cuff, and left a small portion to secure it with a Velcro piece attached to the kayak. Wires run to the front where I have a Nocqua 10AH battery. Once plugged in the unit worked fine. The battery should be good for about 16 hours of run time. So much better than the 4-4.5 hours the C unit is good for.

This mod is so great.  On mine, I heat shrink wrapped the red and black wires up to the plug, then gooped around the head of the plug to seal it up better.  Also, I split power from my Nocqua so I could also power my fishfinder.  I used one of Nocqua's splitters and voltage controllers for the 12V needed for the FF.  The SS and FF work great off of one battery.  You're correct.  Game changer for sure, if you appreciate the additional peace of mind like I do.

Geez.  Slayer mindset is there, just maybe not the know-how?  At least he had a pfd and I guess a compass if he wanted a heading, but that's a long way out!  Hope he got a salmon out of it at least.  A lot to risk for no fish.

This is so cool! The DIY junkie in me wants to tear mine apart and do this but I don't feel like I can justify it yet as mine is only 1 year old. Maybe when the OEM battery starts to loose health. There is something quite satisfying about taking a mass-produced product and making it better. Great work to you both.

Question--are the two batteries (stock and nocqua) wired in parallel or is the stock battery disabled now and only running the SS on the Nocqua?

As Ernest mentioned, the setup is totally reversible with the Type C SS.  Simply unplug the original battery (Im storing it in case I want to revert it back), and plug in the voltage controller, adapt the plug to accept a battery, and done.  Its a great setup.  I did spend some time gooping and greasing it up for waterproofing.

So what is the go-to kayak battery these days? I have a Chet battery which is great, but he’s not selling them right now, and I had a noqua battery that had flimsy connectors and died after a few years, so I don’t want to get another one of those. Is the best option just to get a generic  10 ah LiFePO4 on Amazon?

My 10ah nocqua is a beast.  Great battery.  Maybe you got a bad one? 

I installed the tubing as shown and I'm wondering if 3/4" is too thick...  In principle, I can see how this would be an improvement, however, where the front hatch lid is bent in the middle, I'm not sure the lid is sealing at all with the tubing or with the original seal.  With enough downward pressure, maybe, but I'm not sure I trust it.  I may try 5/8" OD.
