Thanks Paul.  I am trying to find out if Monterey County is North or South of the 36° line.

I signed up. Would it be crazy to try to set up a clean n cook area for fish? Maybe it's too much with everything else going on. Not that I don't love a good hot dog though.

I can set p a clean and cook station only for those going to cook. It will just turn into a mess if everyone cleans there fish as we arent set up for that mess

Hello All,

Set you calendar to September 7th! Sign up at https://www.montereybaykayaks.com/kayak-fishing-tours.html. Just like last year all proceeds will benefit Kayak Fishing For Beginners. Last years proceeds already went to help some awesome kids, a few veterans, and a disabled person get into the sport safely by helping them with safety gear and some fishing equipment.

As we get closer to the event I will post the sponsors. There are more than last year! Also, I added an hr to the event so there is more fish time

Hope to see you all out there

Sounds like we will be picking the 7th as the Derby date. Do any of you have any ideas on how to get more people to bring food to make it a big potluck?

Its that time of the year again to start setting up for the next derby. I want to continue this as long as I possibly can. But in order to do this I need the max number of participants to make it worth it. Cast your vote for the best choice.

If PFMC has the data for N an S, I'm sure they have it broken down into finer geographies.

I can totally believe that few are caught out of Morro Bay.  You can probably check the commercial landing data as a proxy.  It's all there.  I just found it.  Use this link.
You can select species and years.  I did this quickly and see pretty much none out of Morro.  You can also see "hot spots" over time.

It looks like that date is given to PFM from the surveyors at the launches. I have personally seen those surveyors mis identify fish. They need to step up the way they do these stock assessments as they are inaccurate. They mentioned this in the last meeting.

Been appreciating everyone's attention and ideas around the rockfish season changes. Unfortunately, my trust in "the system" that has decimated the rockfish season is at zero. The quillback "problem" seems like a convenient, non-disprovable rationale for the recent restrictions. What really appears to be happening is the fulfillment of preconceived political promises to groups that would prefer zero fishing and are implementing a long-term strategy to get us there. Call me conspiratorial, but my trust in our institutions didn't make it though the last few years. Unless there's a wholesale change of governance in Cali and nearby states, the appointees to the regulatory groups will continue, ratchet-style, to gradually and irreversibly reduce opportunities and it has nothing to do with the health of the fisheries. Bargaining away opportunities in an attempt to appease will only quicken the pace of it.

You realize this isn't coming from CA?  PFMC/Noaa determines the status of the fishery and designates quota.  CDFW has to adhere to quotas and determines regulations to do so.

NOAAhas no say in this matter. This is only on PFM and CDFW

2023 Derby Results
We had 89 people sign up and and 67 showed up. We had great weather. Calm winds and sea. Everyone left with a participant package which included items from our sponsors. The top three largest fish were all Ca Halibut. The bite was a bit slow. There was a large pod of dolphins that many were able to see. Due to the new DFW regulations no one was able to keep any rockfish, cabezon, lingcod, or greenling. Many had caught these fish but all were safely released. Overall around 10 halibut were caught. All were of the larger variety.

All proceeds from the event went to Kayak Fishing For Beginners. KFFB is a Non Profit aimed to help veterans, kids, and people with disabilities get into the sport of kayak fishing safely

Raffle was a big hit with many participants buying extra tickets. We had plenty of hot dogs and other food for participants and their families. Since it was a potluck some participants brought something to add. A big hit was the Cheesecake bites!
