...how salmon fishing is pretty much a total mind-f***.  When you can't get one, you want one so badly, and when you do get one, you want another one so badly!  Salmon fishing becomes an obsession because it's so damn pleasing to challenge yourself in the pursuit and the fight and the net job, and to get the reward of capturing this superstar of the waters of the Eastern Pacific along arguably the most majestic coastline anywhere adds to the power and mystique of the experience.

No trueer words ever spoken.

Great trip report, Eric! Love the thresher action and all the rest of it. Impressive list of species...

Nice reel of some epic moments Marc! You’re a solid guy with solid fishing and kayaking skills. You are destined to catch some monsters!!

Thanks, Mike! This means something from a guy who's holding monsters in his avatar image. I can only dream of those WSBs  :smt002

Its work to get to the flatfish grounds, but it can be very rewarding.

Thanks matanaska, that's how I see it. Petrale Sole are such an awesome target and with a little luck you'll find a salmon or halibut while you're at it. Petrale Sole are among my favorite table fare. Usually you have to do something rather athletic, especially on a paddle kayak, to get them.

Love those flatties!

But, I think you need a bigger fishfinder...

Camera position & perspective. I think you know something about that :smt001

Awesome Video! You planning on coming up north again?

I still remember the good times we had last year. Hoping for a big school of salmon to descend on The Cove, PM me when you're going.

That was a jedi master beach landing (0:30). Awesome fish, too.

It works out most of the time but not always. Ask OG TexaSteve how I lost my sunglasses.

Nice work, Marc.   :smt001

From the man who taught me the ropes, the best kayak fishing guide in California... much appreciated!

This year I spent much of my kayak fishing time chasing chromers, and not without success, but I also came across some remarkable flatties. Here are three specimens. Take a look if you’re into this sort of thing or if you just like slamming into the beach.

General Fishing Tips / Re: Moss Landing Halibut Advice
« on: May 03, 2022, 11:00:04 AM »
I have heard (no direct knowledge) that the "pajaro pipe" is the area to target.  If you look north on nautical charts, there is a sewer pipe that goes out to about 65 FOW outside the pajaro river.  I've heard of butts being targeted here.  Note, about 2 miles offshore from here is the start of the pajaro fingers so if the salmon are close, you can try to target both (still a big day!).

Great info. On my way back from Mulligan's I once crossed paths with a kayaker who had a big halibut on board and think that it came from that area.

Stealth / Re: Stealth Transducer Install.
« on: March 10, 2022, 04:40:12 PM »
Has anyone ever tried a suction mount for their transducer? Im playing around with the idea of finally getting a unit, but im not too keen about putting holes in my boat. Ive wondered about using a suction cup for awhile and in particular the Seasucker vacuum mount. I wonder if you could get creative and mod something out. Would the vacuum suction work underwater? Like could you install the unit underwater? I feel the suction would hold well to fiberglass. Probably would create a bit of drag, but maybe not that noticeable? Anyways just spitballing an idea. PS I really like Rokkits transducer install but that's pretty ballsy to do
That was my first attempt at a transducer and it fulfilled my immediate need and was eventually deterred by drag, though negligible and the arm could be lifted in a pinch.  I did not like eel grass or any other collection of debris on the arm…

The outboard transducer mount (depending on the size of your tx cross-section) increases drag by 8-12 percent.

Anywhere I can rent, or anyone wanna lend me theirs
I'd really love to try these out
Hi Johnny! OC1s are difficult to find as rentals but if you go to an Outrigger Club and ask for a demo you might find something. I once demoed a Kamanu Pueo at the O Kalani Outrigger Club at Encinal/Alameda and another boat, a Kai Wa'a Ares, over at a club in Redwood City. Or - just PM me and we can meet up at Alameda for some outrigger fun.

Very cool. I always wonder why people don't troll from those things...
Some do. I think it is more common in warmer waters. Here's a video about catching Giant Trevally from a similar ocean canoe:
