Title: RTM K-Largo
Post by: Bigfoot on February 13, 2012, 09:09:55 PM
Picked up the new ride Fri 2/10 @ Dennis's Warehouse in Valley Ford. What a cool spot. Had a great day exploring hangouts from my childhood (38 years a go.) Home by 2:00 with my new stick! Started the morning off with breakfast Burritos on the porch of Valley Ford Hotel & Rocker Oysterfeller's Kitchen + Saloon  http://www.panoramio.com/photo/6014286 (http://www.panoramio.com/photo/6014286) . Left there to go unpack Betsy and load her on the Volvo. After running Spike all over hell and back finally got on the road to meet Mr. Kunz in Santa Rosa for some Pho and catching up. After putting a twist in the tie downs, damn that noise is horrible, I had a smooth trip back to the East Bay. Unpacked all the goodies- PRO"S= Wheels/cart, so simple but effective. Front hard case, instant Dry Bag. My lunch even fits in there! 2 x 6" Screw Hatches. Bungied pockets for sm/md tackle box's. Mounting Areas galore, Built in Flotation, I could go on and on. I will wait til I have it in the water before get too judgmental. Cons= 1. Besides the 6" hatches there is no interior hull access. Bummer for carrying an extra paddle ect. I think I have a fix for this and we will have to wait and see. 2. The Plano deep box does not fit in the pocket like Tiny's. Minor Cons compared to the Pros. This is gonna be fun!

Sweet boat Randall! I took one out for a spin with Dan at Bodega Bay. The boat handles great in the surf and plows through the waves. Super stable at one point Dan and I were able to switch boats in the open water, at one point both of us were on the K-Largo. Congrats again and hope to see you OTW soon.

Okay, picked up a few things and started stripping Betsy. First thing to go was the bungees. Then the foot pegs, couldn't straighten my legs out Will install web straps to hold the dry box. Eyelettes to hold the Plano box in with a bungees. Then I started trying too decide where to install mounts. The two on top by my feet are a given. Just trying to decide which ones. I have the old Scotty flush mounts that I capped the bottom with child proof caps off a prescription bottle. The other mount I will have to decide which FF I will be using. That is were I need help from you guys & Girls. see next post.

Placing the fishfinder where I want it is going to be interesting. I would like to make it so it is like the sonar shield thing, where it can fold down face first into the pockest that is for the little tackle boxes. 4 1/2" w x 9" deep. Never used a FF and do not know anything about the mounts.

If it was me I would scrap that scotty mount and use a ram mount for the FF, put the base ball over the sticker so you have enough room behind the mount for a wire well nut to run the wires through deck all water tight and cleanly. you want the wires about 2" behind the base. with a ram mount you can position the head unit a lot more, plus you can fold it down and out of the way while its hooked up. i've had both the scotty FF set up and ram and like the ram 10x more than the scotty.

Next will be the Rod pod. Have to run this by Spike But I think I am going to cut the bottom out of the tray! The Black box that fits in there has mounting screw holes to make it permanent, I would have to cut the bottom out of it also. If you look closely you can see the dark line around the bottom of the pocket. The Tray is a little flimsy but has a waterproof lid and once screwed down should be solid enough. Spike? How much to order one of the Trays? If I take a small semi circle out of the front wall I should be able to fit paddle, poles, and pump through the opening.

Thanks J. I'll look into it. For it to fold down towards me It will have to be mounted as far forward as possible?

Next I am thinking of replacing the screw hatch's with a couple Hobie locking hatch's. They are a little bigger -3/8" but I think I can squeeze them in. If you guys are not laughing too hard (Craig), give me all the brainstorming you can. If you have any Pics of mods please post!
   Thanks

Randall, +1 on the Ram for the FF. Folds down out of the way for Beach launch & landing and is very strong. I will take pics of mine and post back so you can see. I never even take the FF off the yak. Just fold it down. Oh yeah congrats on the new ride. Love the color. jim

I like the Idea but would really like something shorter. They have a 3.5" one that might work.
