Title: 10/18/15 ROOTS Derby. Kayak Connection Santa Cruz
Post by: Bushy on August 26, 2015, 07:57:56 AM
October Surprise!  Dave and Jessica  at Kayak Connection have been swamped all summer.  but, they still want to go with the resurrected "Roots" Derby this year.  So~ we're gonna do it right at the tail end of the season.

We call it the Roots Derby because it is the first, and the original northern California Kayak Fishing Derby.  Kayak Connection in Santa Cruz was sponsoring yearly derbies for a number of years before anyone else had even one derby.  Hearken back to the Old Days, when the crowds were small, hopes were high, we were all just learning the what how when where of kayak fishing.  Man-Dog style BBQ included of course, and proceeds go to Monterey Bay Salmon and Trout Project, as usual.

Oct 18, Sunday. Ocean Kayaks will provide a new Ocean Kayak (Or Old Town Predator) for first place winner. Second and third place prizes to be determined.

I will gather the entry and rules details and post here later this week, but mark your calendar now.......

SIGN UP ONLINE AT KAYAK CONNECTION WEBSITE:

http://www.kayakconnection.com/tours/santa-cruz-harbor/kayak-fishing-derby/

Largest Game Fish Takes It!

We'll have weigh-ins and BBQ at 1PM back at our shop at 413 Lake Ave, right along the harbor.  We'll also have several fishing kayaks for rent, as well, be sure and call the shop to reserve yours if interested.

The entry fee for the derby is $35 - all profits will go to benefit the Monterey Bay Salmon & Trout Project.

Rules are posted below:
1) All fish must be caught from a person powered kayak, no motors or sails, or other boat assistance.
2) Fish must be legally hooked, fought, and landed (solo) by individual angler.
3) Must have a valid fishing license and adhere to all DFW regulations.
4) Launch and landing from public launch docks of Santa Cruz Harbor only.  Travel to other areas for launching and fishing is not permitted.
5) 1:00 PM is the cut-off weigh-in time.  Anglers must be present and in line for weigh-in by 1PM to qualify.
6) Heaviest weighed sport-fish wins.
7) Leopard and thresher sharks included, but no other sharks or rays qualify.
8) If two fish have exact equal weight, then the longer of the two wins.
9) Final decisions on any controversy will be made by Derbymeister with input from participants.  Derbymeister decisions are final. (Ed Note:Meister reserves right to be capricious and arbitrary in all decisions-Ed Note)
10) Waiver forms must be signed and entry fees paid prior to launching on 10/18/15.

Use the link below to pay your entry fee online, or call the Kayak Connection at 831-479-1121.

We're stoked to see all the interest in the ROOTS Derby!  Here's hoping for an extended Indian Summer and some great fishing into late October.  Definitely bummed Big Jim can't make it, but it sounds like he's going to be swarmed by ladies up in SF...

this is going to be fun---I already got like 6 folks on board with me and cant wait--first Derby my wife 'FishingGirl' - aka Amy- gets to paddle out on this year---she lost a really nice fish last year  :smt003 :smt003 and has been practicing setting the star drag ever since....she was using a double squid rubber two hook pLine set up and now every time we go out she tells me to get 'her" lure on the pole  :smt044 :smt044 :smt044
I am also really glad  its a local event and my friends are already signing up....cant wait

went to see my buddy at the fish market and there were these beautiful 8" squid just put out for a 1.50 a pound...got bags of them hand picked the ones with nice tenticals etc...also had some real fresh anchovies there that got tagged and bagged..cant wait

Sign up guys!!  I heard through the grapevine not many sign ups yet.  Dave Grigsby has the man-dog factror to contend with.  I will be at the public hand-launch ramp (next to Stagnaro's Boats) and will be doing weigh-in there.  More details as we get closer.

if you're thinking about it, just go and sign up now!!

No no that's not how it works for me. I only catch cool stuff when I am not equipped to keep the catch or transport it, and when I don't know the regulations so I have to release to be safe. Now that I know about Soupfin Sharks I will never see one again  :smt005

Still not sure which Ocean Kayak will be 1st prize.  could be a Predator 13 or could be a prowler TRIDENT 15 or 13.....Any way you look at it a nice bonus for biggest fish.  here's info from KC with the simpole rules.  Mainly.  You have to launch from Santa Cruz haarbor.  You gotta have a waiver signed before you launch (someone will be in the shop at 6:30am, maybe even 6. You gotta get back to weigh-in by 1pm.  Period.  Weigh in will be at the hand launch ramp next to "F" Dock, Northwest siode of harbor.  I'll be weighmaster and will be at that location around 11:30.

Here's the official info.  If you haven't already, get your entries in, and get a waiver form emailed to you and sign it, and email it back.

Kayak Fishing Derby

35.00
We're getting back to our roots and looking for big fish, lotsa fun, and the opportunity to help out a worthy cause - the Monterey Bay Salmon and Trout Project.

The derby kicks off Sunday, October 18th out of the Santa Cruz Harbor. Entries are $35 per person, and all profits benefit the Monterey Bay Salmon and Trout Project.

10) Waiver forms must be signed and entry fees paid prior to launching on 10/18/15.

Use the link below to pay your entry fee online, or call the Kayak Connection at 831-479-1121.

Just thought I'd share the latest bait intel from last weekend.  Bait was scattered.  We found both pacific and spanish macks.  And to my surprise, a large majority were mini-macs in the 5-7" range.  Also stumbled on a school of 'chovies, which we haven't seen a lot of this year.  So, size your sabiki's down some and go gettem'.

Thanks Polepole.  and, to make thisngs clear.  If you're signed up and have your waiver in, you don't have to go to the shop.  Just launch from SC harbor and be back before 1pm.  If you dont have a waiver, or haven't paid entry nor signed waiver, go to the shop at 6am.  YUou can sign up sign waiver, and go launch.

Weigh in is at hand launch ramp on Southwest Quadrant of harbor. Near F Dock, where Stagnaro's Velocity ties up.  And near UCSC docks.  I'll be there around 11:30.  If you get in with fish before I arrive, keep them wet for weighin.  (Don't put them on a stringer in the harbor water.  Sea lions, and harbor seals might steal your brand-new kayak from you.

Just signed up. Cant wait!

Been to s.c. once before, i parked at aldos restaurant side (west side of harbor) paid the 10bucks for park and launch.

From my understanding, kayak connection is on the opposite side (east) of the harbor, but weigh-in area will be on the aldo's side (west) by the floating dock?

Correct me if im wrong. Still a newbie.

Which side would be more practical to park and launch at? And assuming i want to rally with the rest of the ncka peeps before/after and also attend the bbq.  Which side is everyone else using? And if i park on east side of harbor, would launch be from boat ramp? What are parking/launch fees?

You got it right, as far as parking goes there are two public launch docks on that side.. I'm unsure where weigh ins are but I'm sure they're on the KC side of the harbor... Anywho see ya there!!!

Nope, weigh ins are near F dock on the west side of the harbor.  Last year, we finished weighins here, and people migrated over KC on the other side for the BBQ.

Basically, when you paddle into the harbor, you see the boat launch to your right. Keep going a little more until you see a ramp with a floating platform on the left side. That's where you want to be.

YES.  Thanks Pat.  Weigh in at F dock from "around" 11:30 to 1pm.  Ends promptly at 1pm.  Remember to get to F docjk by 1pm.  If you're in line at 1pm, your fish gets weighed in.  if you paddle up at 1:02pm, you are too late.

Frenchie, I prefer unloading at the boat ramp personally. I found it easier but I'm a bigger guy. On the other side, you have to sit on the ramp and scoot off into your kayak. I found that to be somewhat difficult the first time, but I am sure it would be easier the second time. I still prefer boat ramp anyway!

Fished out of the Harbor today. Did a timed run to some holes, BAIT IS EVERYWHERE and perfect size.. So bring some extra sabiki's cause full stringers destroy them after time...

As far as the launching from the ramp idea.... I know it may be "easier".. but it truly is a S#$T show out there right now at the ramp, good luck if you do choose to go that way.... With all the Blue Fin's being caught, it was crazy leaving the Harbor mouth at 645am. I saw the ramp and it was swamped with boats / trailers, etc. When I say packed, I mean PACKED... Just an FYI as its only Wed, being a Sunday.... Well I am sure you will get the hint.

Oh, we get to see a little action too while we are out there, as the Lane is having the Finals of the CWC that day! Should be an awesome day! Surfing finals, fishing with good people and hopefully good weather!

Cant wait to see / meet all you guys and get to put some a face, real name and smile to the avatars! :P Oh and bring home a new purdy prize!

If you launch from the ramp, just get your yak prepped beside your truck, out of the way, then wheel it down to the ramp...instead of parking on the ramp and getting prepped there. The one advantage to launching from that side is a shorter walk to KC for the BBQ afterwards though.
Also, yeah the Cold Water Classic finals will be going on at Steamers...and this is the first time we've had real waves in like 5 years!

Harbor launch will stay safe......Just pay attention and enter/exit on the EAST side of the Jaws!  West side is wehre the waves break if they are breaking at all.

Also lots of boats in and out of the harbor due to offshore bluefin.  If you're launching while dark YOU HAVE TO HAVE A LIGHT!!  Headlamp worn pointing back works good. Turn your FF on as well, that helps.  If you have a pole light, use it.  Especially if there's any sort of swell cause we kayakers tend to disappear to boaters in a swell. Paddle in a group.  Stay to the very right side of the channel out of PB way.  Seriously, as far right as you can get until you reach the jaws, then shoot across when it's safe to exit East side of the jaws. Not a whole lot of boats fishing inshore so we're good there.  Just traveling to fish, and then coming back in watch out for the PB googans.  (And don't BE a yakker googan).

If you don't have a waiver form in, best bet would be to contact the shop tomorrow Saturday and get details of how and when you can get that waiver, or hand it in.

6-7' on Sunday! Who needs the boardwalk roller coasters when you can just go for a float?!

http://solspot.com/santa-cruz-county-7-day-detailed-swell-forecast/

Yeah,  But they're  @14 seconds..    You won't even feel them.

Plus side is it might keep some of the PB Googans off the water.

This is true. You may have to time your exit out of the harbor a little more though.

watch out for the PB googans.  (And don't BE a yakker googan).

Bushy

I had no idea.  :smt044

Quote
Googan refers to a rogue fisherman:

A fishing term for lowlife, shore fishermen who bait fish typically without a license, regard to regulations, and etiquette towards other people, especially other fishermen following the rules.

Example: “I couldn’t find a spot at the river yesterday. It was totally full of googans hogging up the place, dropping f-bombs, and snagging fish.”

This was over by MBK but the bite was good. I caught 7 lings kept one 23". Caught a few rocks and kept one 16" copper. Just enough to eat this week.

I caught a sand dab and used it as bait then looked for miles for halibut with no luck. Someday...

Frenchie,

Sorry to report that I didn't have my fishing gear, just went out on a paddle for about two hours. We were at a retreat nearby, wife absolutely wasn't allowing me to bring my gear. I wish I'd known about the derby prior, probably could have made it happen...

We missed you Ryan!!

Some people caught nothing.  Some got small lings.  A couple caught big sharks but cut them off.

One guy (the winner) got a wsb.  YES!  Travis Blymer, aka Squidbly just lost a wsb last week.  He rebuilt after the devastating loss and came back strong today.  Made bait and first drop at the Mile Buoy with a live mackerel, he was smacked.  Big fish took him an hour to land, babying it.  towed him almost to Lighthouse Point and then back.

In the end game, Travis came out on top. 56#, 9oz of magnificent White Sea Bass.  10X the weight of first runner up. He was back at the dock by 8:30am, and had to go to Bayside to use their certified scale.  My scale only goes up to fifty pounds!

I could say more, but Travis has a tale to tell!!

Thanks to all who showed up for the latest in the longest running kayak fishing derby in NorCal.

Question:  When do we want to schedule next year's derby?

I did not have any bites, except bunch of bait on sabiki , till 11:30. And then got barely legal ling (who would usually have gone home but I promised to bring fish for dinner)

Anybody knows why it was so slow today?

Congrats, Travis! And thanks a lot, Bushy and all who made it happen!

That winning fish was awesome---pictures just don't do it justice.

I had a big takedown that about ripped the rod out of my hands. Unfortunately, it broke off after about 20 minutes.

Congrats Travis!

Fishing was slow.  Caught some macks.  Sent a big one down live and had a huge take down, fought it for a minute and it was gone.  Most likely a shark.  Cut my 40lb test double line leader.

Thanks to Kayak Connection & Bushy for putting it all together.

Fishing wasn't too slow for me, or my buddy who I was fishing with, we both had 2nd place fish... however I was fishing north of natural bridges area... hence my 1:30 late check in... wind wasn't cooperating too well, but awesome WSB!!! Great to see him redeem himself! It was good meeting some of you, for the 5 secs I was there...

Looking forward towards next years event. Bushy I liked the time of year for the event, maybe a couple weeks sooner next year? Thanks again for putting on a great show.

Congrats Trav!

Thanks everyone for your praise, it was a great day.

Bushy wants a "blow by blow" so here it is:

I arrived outside the Mile Buoy as the sky was getting light. I quickly jigged up some nicely sized mackerel and sent one to the bottom, and another ten feet off the bottom. The drift started to take me deeper so I made sure my bait was still right on the bottom, seconds later my brand new rod/reel started dancing, that was about 7:15. I set the hook and held on for the ride. (last week I lost a wsb at the boat because of a second rod in the water, so I promptly cut my second line.)

The fish was pissed off to say the least. It towed me all over the place, taking so much line.
Every time I gained some line the fish would run again, I lost count at seven runs. It was a total war of attrition, but I was worried that the fish was tiring me out, and not the other way around.

I became aware of how far it towed me, I was close to the lane and in maybe 90-100 feet of water. As it towed me close to a rental boat I asked the angler what time it was, he said 8:23, then asked if I had a ling cod on...

About another ten minutes passed when I began to gain line on the fish, and I finally got color. I tried to stay calm when I saw how big it was. It was spent, but I have a back track record with my "end game" so I was very cautious. I stabbed that son of a bitch and hoisted it onto my yak. After the clip was in I let out a holler and began paddling for the harbor. There is many a slip between a cup and a lip, so I didnt want to mess around. The only time I stopped paddling was to bash it in the head when it began to twitch. What a rush, I was overdosing on adrenaline. SO HYPED. It was such a relief when I had the fish on dry land.

So thats the it, thats the story. I feel very grateful, to the fish, to the sea, to all my friends and family who put up with my shit. Thanks everyone. Hope to see you in the water soon!
