Hey guys anyone go out paddling by pillar point harbor I've been out 2ice and skunked out, I only caught bait fish so I've been trying to get into kayak fishing but I haven't been doing so well if anyone wants to give me some hints or advice or even go out let me know what I need and food and bait on me I just really love fishing have been doing it since I was 6 but the whole fish finder WHALES LOL and waves have been giving me trouble, I've done really good off the pier but I see guys pulling with limits of rock fish and huge lings and cabezon is mainly do catch and release and keep maybe a couple each trip so no worries on thinking I'll be keeping illegal sized fish or keeping too much, if any of you can help I'd highly appreciate it!!

Thank you in advance!!!;). [emoji225][emoji226][emoji245][emoji227][emoji228][emoji229][emoji476][emoji476][emoji476]

once you exit the jaws, head south towards the green can, there's a reef there that holds decent fish..

also... now is a great time to troll for salmon a the green can west of the harbor!

just watch the wx forecast (swell forecast) and the power boats!

good luck, happy hunting!!

watch the drift... set-up on the drift just upcurrent oft the reef, get to the bottom before you are over the reef...  try using a 4oz suitbait on the bottom and a shrimp fly (white) about 12"-18" just above, tip both with squid strips....

I was out there today... pretty late start.  got out around 9:45... came back around 2.
I was more interested in getting my paddling technique down... than fishing... as I'm pretty new to this kayak fishing.

When small boating, I usually use fishfinder rig with any live fish that I can catch with a sabiki.
After I came in, I met another kayak fisherman, Ron.  He used this exact set up and caught 2 lingcods today.

Go on google map... sat view.  You should actually be able to see where the reefs are.
Hope this helps.

Welcome and good luck! I haven't fished there for several years and last time was from a friend's outboard, but  the advice from G-Whiz is spot on. Plus if it's a weekend you should see at least a couple boats there. Not always doing the drift thing, but that's the way.

I would fish around the green can. If you are fishing for RF, use a shrimp fly and find the reef to the right of the green can or even near the kelp patch. If you want to try Salmon go down 25-30 pulls on a banana weight with a 4 ft leader to an anchovy w/ barbless hooks. The salmon bite is at grey light. Anything after 9:30 a.m and you're chances go down pretty low.

Yeah be careful with the wind, swells and waves. If you are uncomfortable, just head in. Keep you radio on 69 and dress for immersion. Good luck.
