Guys,
I will be heading up north to do a weekend camping and wondering if Black Turban snails are edible. i assume they should be but not quite sure.
my folks do consume water snails from the Asian market so was curious if i could collect some for consumption. last year saw a ton of them during abalone season. not too fund of sea urchin but might give that a try as well.

You can eat anything!!

I’ve seen snails at those markets too

I’ve also seen people harvesting them in tidal areas near me

Let us know how they taste

Yes, they are. I tried them once and wasn’t too impressed, personally.  Since they are an invertebrate without a specific limit listed in the regulations, I believe the limit is 35 per person.

It's the gonad and not roe that is consumed on the uni.

When harvesting them make sure to get them in an area with kelp nearby. You will also want to crack one open to make sure the gonads are even worth harvesting. Usually other urchin in the immediate area will be in the same condition and it would be best to move to another spot and check again for quality if the current spot quality is poor. Most of the uni I have harvested lately in Mendo and Humboldt counties have been in poor shape and non edible. They are starving just like the abalone are. The gonads should be a bright orange or yellowish brown mustard in color and plump. The majority of the urchin gonads I've seen lately are withered, brownish, non existent or have an iodine taste to them.

It's actually pretty sad  :smt009

If you find them they are awesome and one of my favorite to consume..............good luck

I'm pretty sure Big Jim ate turbans once  :smt001

Yes, I knew a guy that would put them in his clam chowder. When I was younger we would get horse neck clams in the breakwater at half moon bay. Which I think you can not take anymore.
