Vermilion (top)
Yellow Eye (bottom)

Thanks Mooch, it's nice to look at them both side by side. The first Verm I caught @ OC I was a little nervous. Now it's obvious:)

Vermillion have a rough chin and rough maxillary.
Yelloweye and canary have smooth chin and smooth maxillary.
That's what works best for me.

My memory is os piss poor that I bought one of the full color fish ID sheets, then just cut out the couple I need to keep track of and now its part of my saltwater gear. It gets down to maybe 2-3 cards about the size of a credit card.

Does this look like a yelloweye? His eye was yellow and he was more orange than red so I threw him back to be safe.. I don't have any better pictures but I don't remember the line being that light... Tell me what you think?

Black Tips on fins = Yelloweye. Good for you for releasing it. Beautiful fish!
The best way to tell is to rub its chin. If its chin is rough then it is OK to keep. If its chin is smooth, then let it go.

Ok phew! I knew there was something about the chin but couldn't remember at the time! I won't forget now though! :) I feel a lot better ..Thanks Rock Hopper!

I caught my first ever yellow eye at TC this year. Their eyes are really really yellow with a glow. Beautiful fish for sure.

That's a big @$$ yelloweye!

Black tips on the fins and smooth chin? Thanks guys was wondering just now myself after seeing Big Jim's latest posts.
This one is a fatty!!!

My motto on a red fish "if its rough, its good enough"
Canary and yelloweye both have smooth "chins" (lower maxilary)
Vermilion have very rough chins

I sure hope they stay still underwater when I am spearfishing so I can rub their chin.
I am just now getting into the depth that typically holds them so hopefully the yellow eyes will stand out so I don't shoot one.
