Fish Talk / Is it time to reduce Rockfish limits?
« on: September 04, 2017, 09:06:42 AM »
I think its time and actually way over due to reduce the daily bag limit on rock fish. My background is I have been fishing these waters Bodega Bay and up north sense the mid 1960's diving, spearfishing, Kayaking and fishing from the beach and rocks. There is just to many of us. We all love to fish I don't want to sound like a snotty tree hugger. I too like to harvest the oceans and teach my sons to do the same but there are so many boats and kayakers now its just getting over run/fished.
Oregon has 7 daily bag limits I think Calif should do the same. I would rather keep 7 nice fish than 10 tiny or small fish any day.
The only ones I can think of that would have a cow is the Party boats I can see them screaming out against this , who would pay 150.00 to catch 7 small cod.
Anyway slam me if you want but there are going to be more and more fishermen and less and less nice size fish....Am I wrong?

Just a heads up this weekend looks great for anything diving and fishing above Bodega Bay north but if your coming from the valley or the foothills and take hwy37 Sears Point is "NASCAR" is going all weekend so expect hours of delays. Just saying...LOL Might think Mendocino threw Clear Lake would be a better drive.

CA Regulations / lure with 3 sets of treble hooks?
« on: May 17, 2017, 06:48:33 AM »
So is a lure with 3 sets of treble hooks on it considered fishing with 3 hooks ? So in the ocean this would be illegal? I see large trolling lures all the time with 3 treble hooks on them.

Craftsmen's Corner / Fishfinder Anti glare screen
« on: April 16, 2017, 05:11:44 PM »
Any of you put a anti glare screen film on your fishfinder? Mine gets really hard to look at and with salt spray on it if I wipe it while I am fishing I am afraid of scratching the screen.

CA Regulations / Using Rockfish to catch Lingcod?
« on: April 11, 2017, 08:15:02 AM »
I was told catching a small Blue Rockfish was ok to re-hook it and use it for Lingcod. They said as long as you count it toward the daily limit?
I thought this was totally illegal but on YouTube I was told as long as you (counted toward the daily limit)....IDK cant find any reference in the book?

General Fishing Tips / Sacramento River Salmon tips
« on: October 04, 2016, 04:11:41 PM »
Hi guys I have a friend who wanted to kayak the Sac River for salmon but we have never done this. Is the river calm enough to paddle upstream? We went in spring when the shad were running and there is no way this old man can row up stream. This would be around Freeport just south of the city. What kind of setup should we start with. Were thinking 20# test with some sort of spinners and I guess no weight? Also what about hooks? 1 hook, barbless what about treble hooks?
Any input is appreciated.

Kayak Diving and Spearfishing / Starving Abalone? Another Closure?
« on: August 18, 2016, 06:34:33 AM »
Me and a friend went diving for abalone and got back to shore and realized we had 9 inch abs with the foot about size of a 4 inch abalone. I got home to clean it and it was the size of a scallop. This is what I found on CDFW Marine here is the link it explains it in detail.
https://cdfwmarine.wordpress.com/2016/03/30/perfect-storm-decimates-kelp/

What do you other divers think? This just might close the coast for good or am I making to much out of this?

Gearing Up and Rigging Up / Garmin Striker 4 weakness ?
« on: August 06, 2016, 05:58:26 AM »
Looking for another FF for my other kayak I was looking at a Striker 4 CHIRP only $119.00 I don't really need the chartplotter its not that great on the Striker 4 anyway. What has turned me off is I really started to look at the "Transmit Power RMS" Power rating they don't talk about this much but apparently it has a lot to do with how CHIRP works and the Striker 4 CHIRP is very weak its the lowest RMS of all the FF with CHIRP its only 200w RMS. OK so here is where I will be using this near shore rockfishing 25 to 125 ft of water and as most of you know the ocean water can be very dirty at times so would a 200w RMS transducer be strong enough in dirty water to get down and give good CHIRP signals back? Do any of you have experience with the Striker 4 CHIRP? Not the Striker 4 DV because that has a stronger 300w RMS transducer.

Fish Talk / Blue Rockfish with slime in there stomachs?
« on: July 31, 2016, 06:52:39 AM »
Went fishing up north Ocean Cove caught some nice blue rockfish they looked healthy took them home started to fillet them out this clear slime came out of the first one. OK so I did another one same thing so the next one I squeezed it stomach before filleting and this clear slime came out of the stomach of all the blues. I don't recall ever seeing this before and wondered if anyone else has seen this? There was nothing in there stomachs except this clear slime about a 1/3 a cup in all the blues.

General Fishing Tips / Rock fish Rigging and set up Ideas?
« on: April 21, 2016, 07:15:49 PM »
Need input as to rigging for lingcod and rock fish. I tie my own jigs I like the lures further out than the store bought type. I use the Dropper Loop for this.
Main line pound test?
Braided or mono?
Jig line pound test ?
The reason I ask is I lost a very nice ling wed. and it was all my fault the jig line had been around for years it always worked its 40# mono thinking of going with 50# for the jigs but the main line cant be 50# if I got a snag it would pull the kayak over trying to break it.
I DONT want to lose another ling like that boy that was painful...I might have to go to therapy over that one.

Kayak Diving and Spearfishing / Today Bodega Buoy for Ab Season
« on: March 31, 2016, 07:51:24 AM »
If ab season were open today wow looks to be a nice day diving. So I circled in red the other things I look at to tell what kind of a day it is. Obviously 4.5 ft every 17 sec is nice but I also look at "WWH" wind wave height and "Steepness". I need to know because I am traveling so far to get there. I don't like to dive in nasty any more to old for that now. Be safe this weekend don't take risks its just a mussel on a rock not worth your life. Good luck and enjoy!

Craftsmen's Corner / Tranducer mounts "stupid" kayak makers
« on: March 22, 2016, 08:48:33 AM »
New Fishfinder just picked up a Lowrance Elite 4 HDI..... WOW had it out once and the things that I can see and do now is awesome I cant wait to try it in the "big pond" But what I am here for is a major complaint for all kayak makers. Who designs this stuff its got to be a bunch of suits that never hook up a transducer on a kayak, probably never fished on on either. My new transducer is huge and most new transducers I have seen are either bigger or longer. My Ocean Kayak "2014" has a spot for a transducer about the size of an egg "stupid" nothing will fit except a transducer that is special order puck style and its more than what the FF is worth. If you make a spot for a FF on a kayak make it so it fits all sizes of transducers not just Humminbird's gosh that's so dumb. I dint like to shoot threw the hull I have found sensitivity on the new FF it wants to be in the water. I found fussing around with glues and gels a mess so I fabricated a 2" aluminum bar and its mounts to the side works fine but if Ocean Kayak had made the transducer spot just a little bigger I could have put it there out of the way and in the water clean and never have to worry about swinging out of the way for a beach landing or kelp hang-ups. OK glad to get that off my chest thanks for listing...LOL "Joe the bartender" another beer please.

Kayak Diving and Spearfishing / Need a Dive buddy
« on: March 14, 2016, 04:02:11 PM »
Hi I don't know if this is the place in the forum but I would like to hook up with someone to do some freedive abalone and spearfish the north coast. From the Sacramento area would be nice but we could still meet at Vallejo , Jenner or Santa Rosa. I can dive from a kayak, beach, cliff wherever.
My experience I have been freediving for ? well I lost count around 40+ years.
Kayak fishing is also very much in play too....
Thanks

Kayak Diving and Spearfishing / Empty abalony shells everywhere...2012
« on: April 08, 2012, 07:45:20 AM »
Went diving Sat and was shocked at all the empty shells I saw and we dove deep 20-30ft + in open ocean.
I got my limit but nowhere as many abs in this honey hole. This place used to look like coins in a fountain ab's
everywhere now GONE!
I predict they will close the season early and if we get another die off you wont be getting abalone for 5 to 10 years.
They should lower the limit to two and the yearly limit to 12 starting now. But no they will wait till its too late and be in a big panic and close it indefinitely mark my words. Fish and Game don't know how to regulate this coast like the abalone divers and fishermen that have been diving and fishing here for 40 years, same places so we see the change. Like the cod fishing most fishermen could have told you 12 years ago they should shorten the season early to let the cod come back.
