Title: 3 boys, no yak, less time and a new board to read...SF
Post by: airtobi on October 07, 2014, 01:02:44 AM
father of three in SF (9,11 & 12)...keep vacillating about getting kayak...shore fishing 'round here driving me nuts...then I see a new GWS encounter and I'm out!. Im an Aussie...Im too used to those being fatal.
Took my 12 yr old down to SD in July for a 3 1/2 day trip on the Pegasus....holy crap...fly lining live anchovies to YFT is a helluva way for a kid to get hooked on fishing
Still looking for the sporting way to hit NorCal salmon...maybe on a yak is the way to go..
back to legal briefs.....ZZZzzzz

Welcome to the madness, and there is this thing called fresh water, not to much of it around these days, but I hear you can fish in it when it is around.

Thanks Sailfish...
Squidder I grew up on fresh...was tying flies before I could handle a fly-rod...browns like crocodiles in the highlands back home...though theres always those pesky but deadly tiger snakes too...thats where NZ has us pipped. But w a handle like Squidder I sense you're a salty too (happen to love the Penn Squidders...140's, 145's and 146's most w Newell bars/clamp & spools...its a joy to hear them)

If you loke you like old Penn's check out Alan Tani's website: http://alantani.com/index.php

A lot of guys rebuild old Penns on his forum.  Grew up with old penns, but never had to worry about crocks or snakes to much back east.

Newell Parts have become expensive and hard to find, I see more and more guys switching to tibron frames now adays.  I have developed a passion for the Surfmaster 100 for kayak fishing.  Seems to be a decent Penn for inshore fishing, can double for some light surfcasting as well.

Squidder, its funny how there always seems to be an old Penn that fits the requirements. I took an old Beachmaster (155) out this morning, bumping some swim baits along the yacht club and crissy field. The reel did better than I could have hoped...not fish tested tho unfortunately.
I know Alan. I actually have two 5:1 ss gear sets, w ss double dogs for my narrow 501's sitting here on my desk. Was supposed to run down to Alans to use his workshop a few weeks back but y'know...things get busy. What a contribution that man has made to reel preservation as a whole, but especially Penn's...meticulous.
