Whatever you do, do not buy your kayak from 'Adventure Sports' in Sacramento.

They suck big time!!!

I would be a bit cautious about what you post:

It's unfortunate that accurate information can be stiffled but we need to be discreet.

I have worked at both California Canoe & Kayak (both locations) and Kayak Connection (SC only)  and from an employee perspective both shops were great. I've picked up some dive stuff from the Adventure Sports in Santa Cruz, staff there were friendly & stoked that I fished from a kayak.
My fav shop is of course the Kayak Connection in the SC harbor, although they don't have a lot of fishing stuff the owners & staff are great folks.

I've read several posts on Craigslist about them. They seem to be known for advertising a kayak on sale then when the buyer goes in the kayak is no longer on sale. They tell the buyer that they only had one at that price and it already sold. They then offer the identical kayak for more than their advertised price. They also run non-stop postings about their alledged sales.

I'm not sure what happened to those unfortunate Craigslist souls that claimed to be screwed by Adventure Sports but I need to tell you my story.  Unlike the computer cowards that hide behind their screen names I have receipts and I will stand by my story.

After Paddlefest last year I followed up on their ad for a used Tarpon and even called them before I drove to Sacto.  He told me over the phone that the one advertised was sold but if I drove up there he had another one that he would sell me for the same price.  Anyone that ever bought a used car would have the hairs on the back of their neck stand up at that point.  Oh well, nothing ventured nothing gained...so I headed out expecting to find a faded, scratched up, pathetic leaking shell that wouldn't even get me out of HMB harbor.

When I got to the store I showed him their Paddlefest flyer and told him I phoned earlier.  He walked me over to a rack of new Tarpons and said there it is...have a look.  I said this must be a mistake because this one is new.  Nope, its the end of the season, its yours for the used price if you want it.  They helped me load the yak and even double checked to make sure I had it tied down well enough for the ride home.  No hidden defects, no surcharges, no handling fees.

Just so we understand things here, I'm not saying that they're going to do this for everyone that walks into their store, this was my isolated experience.  Am I getting paid for this...no.  Anyone that has met me, read my posts or spoke with me knows that I wouldn't BS about stuff like this.

CCK has three locations . Sacremento and Jack London Square in Oakland have stores on the water with lessons too. Half Moon Bay is just for lessons and trips and parties. No sales or rentals.

I like Surf City Catamarans in Santa Cruz harbor.  http://www.surfcitycatamarans.com.  Owner/proprietor Jeremy is one really cool dude.  Plus, on a hot summer day, you can't beat the scenery.  Y'all really have to see the hotties at the Crow's Nest.   :smt007

Wind Toys in Santa Rosa
3019 Santa Rosa Ave.
Santa Rosa CA 95407
800-499-7245

John Shulthess owner.

Good place to get Kayaks in the Northern Bay area. I met John at the Fred Hall show and once prior to that. I got my kayaks (well "paddleboat" for all you "paddlers) from him at a good price and he threw in a bunch of extra stuff. A long ride from Sunnyvale, but well worth it IMHO.

We also rent hobie kayaks. Singles and tandems.

Does this mean that you have more than just the one Outback and one Outfitter?  I was in a couple weeks ago wanting to rent 2 single-person Hobies but was told you only had the one Outback.  Might you add more to your fleet - possibly an Adventure, Revolution or Sport?  Often I want to invite more than one person out with me and don't want to have them on a tandem.

Thanks

Great shop in Livermore - Sunrise Mountain Sports
http://www.sunrisemountainsports.com

I bought my OK Caper from them, and Phil gave me a great deal (if you rent a kayak, they'll use your rental fee towards a new yak purchase)

They do take-away kayak rentals from their store and also run a rental shack/concession stand at lake Del Valle during Spring/Summer/early Fall
They hold a kayak demo day every year in May

You are right. We do only have one of each. We are looking to expand our fleet. We are actually trying to decide if we want to expand to the Hobie non fishing kayaks. Unfortunatley this requires us to purchase 15 units which is quite a large initial order. We are not sure if the local market is ready to expand quite yet, but next year we are updating our entire line of rentals so we will decide then. What do you guys think?

Eric you should take the time to set the Sacramento store up with kayak fishing information and equipment.. They are good people, have a ton of fishing gear, Thursday evening speakers + a free spool of line, though not much in the line of kayak fishing.

I am just getting back into fishing and will start Hobie Mirage kayaking (bad shoulder) so why not do both.

Just saw this post and the negative comments about adventure sports in Sac. Here is my experience w/ them. A couple years ago, I bought my 07 outback from these guys at the ISE in San Mateo.  For $1650 + tax, I received the new 07 outback, w/ fishing package,(wheels, anchor, tackle boxes and bag).  They also threw in a free extrasport pfd.  AND! They threw in a free Brand New Tarpon 100 with 2 installed flushmounts and a mounted scotty rodholder!  I sold the tarpon on craigs list for $550.  In my opinion the deal was more than fair and I have no problem recommending them.  In fact, I did.  Ride123 got the same deal the very next day!  Anyway thats my 2 cents.

I'm hoping to get my next yak, a Hobie OB, at the '09 ISE as I remember seeing some pretty good deals last year.  I can only hope to stumble across something as good as yours Tok.

Hello all, I am brand new to the group and kayak fishing...I researched and tested various kayaks for several months before settling on the ocean kayak trident prowler 11 angler.  As it was winter and the holiday season was near, I was in no hurry to make a purchase and even considered buying a used yak off craigslist.  Just after xmas, I saw an ad from Adventure Sports in Sacto listing the kayak for $550 and noted that it was a blem.  I called the very next day and the sales person was very helpful.  He said the yak was on the floor and that the only blem was a small defect in the sticker.  I bought the yak sight unseen and drove up the following weekend.  I examing the sticker and could not see any defect or any other defect for that matter.  The sales person was very helpful and I took my new yak home being very satisfied.  I like to give credit where credit is due and thought I would weigh in on my experience.  For info, I took the yak out with my son and his new frenzy last Sunday at Shadow Cliffs.  We stuck to just cruzin the lake as it was his first time and had a great time.  We getting ready for the next trip, when we fully plan to bring home some fish!

Yakdad,
I also got my yak from Adventure Sports (kayak city), and also had a very good experience.  I got a good deal on an angler Tarpon 120 with the new hatches.  They also gave me a free paddle upgrade. I have been recomending them to my friends and have gone back several times for gear.   Helpful staff and a great selection of yaks, I couldn't complain.   After reading some previous posts I get the impression that they are getting a bad wrap, just my opinion.

They got a bad rap because they were sleezebags.

Glad to hear that maybe they have turned over a new leaf.

I think that they have been making changes for the better.  I went into Adventure over the weekend and the owner said that they had to part ways with one of their main guys there.  He said that there was an issue with a customer that was mistreated so he had to give the guy the boot! Customers first. My experiences have been good, but I glad to hear they are willing to take a stand to ensure good customer service.

http://www.clavey.com/.. (http://www.clavey.com/..) These local Sonoma County guys are tops. They helped with almost all the big donations last year at Albion.  Small store that really caters to the individuals needs. These guys arent a large corporation, just a hometown feel good place.

Yeah last year I stopped by on my way to Albion. Didn't need any gear so I got a hat and shirt. Told them thanks for the support...On a side note I wore the shirt on my flight to Houston I wore the shirt proudly. Nice to help the little guy.

I always seem to get a good deal at Aquan in San Carlos.  Last year I got 25% off a brand new OK Trident 13.

During the Christmas week of 2010.  I stopped by there with what I thought was a fix budget.  Well I ended up going over.  (Somehow feel under my wife's radar) I was given 15% off  Kokatat Tempest pants and a complete Thule Rack system $100 below retail, installation included.

I am not affiliated, just passing my savings.

That's a sweet deal. I put a deposit down on a demo 2012 Revo 13 and it won't be coming with anything except the paddle and the seat. I'm paying 1600 + taxes and oh they are throwing in the turbo fins, is that a good deal still? I heard that the 2013 models will be the same as the 2012 just going up $300. Plus I still get the warranties with it. So I'm under the impression that I got a good deal.

Aquan (San Carlos) mentioned in earlier post has Wed night paddle at San Mateo aquatic park, $20, you can try multiple kayaks.  Call the store to see if they have what you want to paddle at the boathouse.  I had a good time on the Slough paddling under Hwy92.  Saw a lot of pelicans and what looked like fish feeding at the surface but didn't have any gear.

The revo only went up $50, and you would get the warrantee with any new purchased boat regardless of year.  But yes that's a pretty good deal, especially with the turbo fins

I'm excited for you Kathy! I think your new endeavor will do great. We may need to talk about storing some Cuda 12 and Cuda 14 demos at your place so folks don't have to drive all the way to Lodi to test out the Jackson line. Looking forward to working with you more and helping you grow your business. Exciting time for you for sure!

Kayak shops for the most part carry only fishing kayaks from a couple of different manufacturers. For the Hobie boats in my area only one shop, Kayak Connection, can order them for you to buy.

Being able to try before you buy is something else entirely. There are demo days but in most cases we would have had to drive 400 miles round trip and tried them out on a lake or in the delta.

Only CCK was able to provide use with an Outback and a Revo 13 to demo the same day and out in SF Bay and able to provides us with both the standard and turbo fin equipped Mirage drives to try with both boats.

We waited several weeks for Kayak Connection to have both models in stock but they would not hold onto them over the weekend and would not provide demos on the weekend. That is why we went to CCK instead to demo and then to buy two of the Revo 13's.

New to forum...Headwaters Kayak trip

Recently, after months of research and finally coming to some conclusions I headed down to HEADWATERS KAYAK in Lodi...I was 100% prepared with a million questions and ready to annoy anybody I ran into...

I was met by Dan and Bam in the shop and suddenly felt a sense of hospitality and genuine willingness to get me going in the right direction...needless to say I drove home fully rigged and ready to roll...professionalism, customer service, passion, and friendliness are just a few words I can say about the shop...lifetime customer and supporter...thanks Dan

I heard on Friday that Aquan in San Carlos is no longer in business.  Anyone able to confirm that?

I visited this location and it is no longer Aquan. Aquan has been bought out or "taken over" by California Canoe and Kayak. I arrived there at closing time, 5:56 and was disappointed that the door was locked. I was about to leave and I seen someone rush to the door and opened it. A gentlemen told me that he prematurely closed the store and kindly let me in. I told him I was not going to buy anything but had a few questions on kayaks. He had no problem and walked me around the store. Let me sit inside a Hobie and told/showed me a few different kayaks. He informed me that all of the current stock was from Aquan and did not have any regular California Canoe and Kayak merchandise. He did inform me as soon as he would sell any of the stuff he had in stock, they would restock it with their own.
I believe he mentioned there was going to be a grand opening sale in January.
Hope this helps!
