The Smith is running that milky snowmelt color which means it's steelhead time. The narrows between Lake Earl and Lake Tolowa is the place for sea-run cutthroat, but Lake Tolowa was just breached a few days ago. The perchin' has been great when the swells have laid down. The dungeness have been going about 15 keepers to the trap on an overnight soak. You have to go through them to keep the 10 fullest ones though.

I've not seen any this year yet, but according to my records they showed up on Feb. 13 last year. It's been feeling like spring, so I wouldn't be surprised if they didn't show up a little earlier this year. I'll try to remember to post when they do show up.
By the way, only 2 calicos today in 45 minutes.

Update. Feb. 2. The herring have shown up in the Crescent City harbor
this morning.

Yeah they are there, but it's still somewhat early.

from Humboldttuna.com-
"  I fished the boat ramp breakwater and it was a steady pick of 1's and 2 's.
70 % of casts were on to a Herring. It was steady from 11 AM to 2 PM.
High tide was around 12:30 today.
Cool stiff 10 knot wind from the North after 1:00 PM. In most peoples faces.
I got cold after that.

I did not bring a boat today. I brought a cast net but did not use it.

Like Gene said,  Citizens Dock was deserted at 2 PM. I did see guys in
boats catching inside the boat basin. Boats in the rest of the harbor were
doing OK too. If you looked for the Sea Lion activity, that got you on fish.
Sea Lions were crashing in front of the ramp breakwater the whole time
I was there. I think the boats that anchored in a decent spot and let the
schools of Herring swim by were doing the best."
