What a score!  Congrats Mooch.
Ketchikan is a cool place.  Howard is a cool person.
When do you start writing the book?

Brown Pelicans are one of the endangered species success stories.  No longer listed, anglers are well aware that they now have robust populations in many near coastal waters.  While they can disrupt a drift, I know that many of us respect their quirky place in our coastal community.

The following link has information on reporting sightings of rehabbed birds.

I am passing this along as many of us carry cameras and may be close enough to recognize a tag and provide information for this study.

Thanks.   :smt006

The combined knowledge on the boat was awesome.  Randy and I finally made good on Sean and Paul's years of patient tutelage and scored our first kayak YT.

Other highlights were the Poke' snack served to us on the water courtesy of Sean's contribution of the first boated Yellowfin to the galley.

And the two nights of making bait.  You know you are having fun when 20 people can all be working the rails with Sabikis in hand and no one is tangled up, but LOTS of mackerel end up in the bait wells.

We are just back from the fish processors.  Even in small vacuum packs, it is a lot of the bounty of the sea.  We are preparing the barbecue.........looking forward to supper.

Hookups and Fishing Reports (Viewable by Public) / Cedros the beginning

I am sure that there will be many posts about the Islander 2009 trip.  Here is just a beginning........

With tropical storm Olaf weakening off the Baja Coast, the NCKA crew quickly assembled at Fisherman's landing in San Diego.  This group was organized…shuttling, toting, passing, greeting, Hi 5, rolling, lifting.  On board before 7:30 AM.

After signing in and paying for the Mexican fishing license, and getting into the jackpot, we were off to  pickup bait.
We got the welcoming message from Captain Shane and a review of the upcoming week.  We were advised that the beginning of the trip would be a bit bumpy.  Yep.

Scopolamine patches were much appreciated.  We traveled a full day and a half in these conditions.

Yep.  Bite sounds pretty good.  But, sounds like lots of the fishing is being done on the Qualifier.  Seems to be a different sort of group.............hmmmmmmmm, yep, bound to be different than a bunch of NCKA'ers....... :smt003

Gearing Up and Rigging Up / Re: Islander '09~ Gearing Up.

So, I decide to go by Fisherman's Warehouse since I was considering a new rod for YT jigging.

I walk through the front door and the first rod in the rack just feet inside the door is an Okuma Cedros Speed Jig.  Okay, that was easy....... :smt044

Another item to pack if you are using scopolamine patches, I find I am way more comfortable with it if I bring sugarfree gum to chew.  Deals with the dry mouth without non-stop water chugging.

Yep, I'm excited.

You are really thinking 50# Tote?

I too am going with YT lust.

I am so far planning Abu inshore and Trevalla with 20#, Tekota with 25# and Catalina reel and Baidarka rod with 40#.  All are braid with mono top shot.

I have a new Sealine 20 with upgraded drag washers.  Any suggestions on what I put on it?

I am thinking to pair the Sealine with a Shimano rod 15-30.

Any suggestions?

The response from Okuma has been very nice.  I should have a new rod in about 10 days.

Sean, did you use no topshot for your YT's?

Yeah.  Salt water heals lots of things............but a good ER close by shouldn't be dismissed.
Glad you were looking out for her.

Yeah.  The sponsor support was wonderful.  Crazyman Mark was a hoot.........and made Mike's good tourney great.
Kit's Kokatat goodies were unbelieveable.  A replacement for my much loved red pac-lite jacket, a pair of high end britches suitable for warm mexican fishing days and a fishing hat to match my boat.  That and the great group to spend a long weekend with.......priceless.

PAL didn't just spend his time photographing the craziness.
