AWESOME!!!  Aside from the Yakhopper serries, this has been my favorite local event for years!   :smt003  I'll be there for sure, and maybe this time I can actually place!  :smt044

DOH!

Thanks Eric.........!!!!!

Time flies Guess I've been lagging.  I help coordinate this annual event, and it IS a great get-together, and we always see some nice fish come in (except that ONE year)

Someone has to knock E2G off his high horse.  Alain, you up for it?

We don't have a huge amount of prizes, mainly it's for the spirit and camaraderie.  But, Ocean Kayaks always donates a brand new fishing kayak as 1st prize (there's a cool grand right there), MBK usually kicks in a nice paddle for #2, and third place gets something smaller, like polarized fishing shades.

All proceeds beyond the event costs (Man-dogs-sodas etc) go to my favorite non-profit:  The Monterey Bay Salmon and Trout Project (who released 240,000 king salmon again this year from the Santa Cruz Harbor!)

I'm glad someone around here is thinking.  Thanks again Eric!!!!

That's the weekend before Albion.  :smt012

In all fairness to MBK, I'm pretty sure it was the same weekend last year.

I'm just bummed because I have a soccer tournament that weekend in Santa Cruz.

I'll be there and grill dogs if needed. I will actually compete this year because sumo needs some competition.  :smt044 :smt044 :smt044 actually, the only one I would bet on besides sumo is Nathan, sumo jr.  :smt005

Remember.....the more people show, the more fun we have.  Fewer people show=the better chance to win!

so you guys should probably be downtalking the event.  "It was no fun last year" ; "there's no fish to catch at MBK."  Like that.

It's always fun !!! Not sure my WAF account has room for it as we are leaving Thursday for four days at Albion. Besides with Eugene there the best I'll be able to do is second place  :smt002. Kind of like challenging DC to a Hali fishing contest in Santa Cruz. How about an E2G versus DC side bet. My money's on E2G

Hey, how did I get dragged into this :smt005?  Don't tempt me, I spent many years fishing the Monterey to Pt Sur side (power boat) and have some killer numbers too, unfortunately they're all LORAN numbers!  :smt003

I love to trash talk as much as the next guy, but DC vs me is like The NY Giants vs the Watsonville Wildcatz.  He has caught more halibut this year than I have in the last decade.

That being said, sometimes its better to be lucky than good  :smt002

I still have a handheld loran unit in the garage.  Thing looks like a radio from a WW2 war movie

We'll have plenty of people there.  Don't be shy, hook up with someone as a partner for safety and tutelege.  Also, review some of our safety first posts, make sure to dress correct and have the right gear!

The squid are already around...combined w/another full moon phase and they'll start dropping eggs...which means = wsb.
This could be a very interesting derby.

Would that be fair?  I think when discussing electric motors we phrased the decision something like "human powered," which includes paddling and peddling.

Also I talked to the manager at MBK yesterday.  they are ready to go and will be taking sign ins starting at 6am for the 7am gran-prix start.

Very few pre-registered, so it may be a mob scene between 6am and 7am.  PLeeeeeeease pre-register today or tomorrow so we can all start the day in a sunny mood.

This is going to be fun, thanks again everyone!!

Sounds like a no to me.   :smt001

No sure if the WSB's are in yet but last year they were more towards sand city and moss landing area.  The year before quite a few was caught towards the point and in front of the big hotel by the beach.

I am super tired after the long weekend but let me say a GREAT time was had by all, great man-dogs, Thanks to MBK for hosting, Scott for cooking, Andy for taking all maintenance duties and eating theat BBQ squid (great pix coming tomorrow of the squid eating) In the meantime here's a sample:

Nobody deserved that more than you. I am so happy for you and Daniel taking second. You put in the hours and you got the skillz. The crazy thing is the second 30# hali you landed. Should have pushed it further north but there is only so far I am willing to paddle for a flattie.  :smt005 :smt005 :smt005 I hate those wormy hard to cook fish, but let's not get Art all riled up again.  :smt005

60ft off Tioga on whole squid. Sliding sinker w/4oz and 3ft leader to 5/0 octo & 4/0 treble. I was slowly trolling across the bottom. First fish went 43" 34lbs and second fish went 40" 26lbs. The two biggest fish I've ever caught off my yak...stoked!

Fish #1
(http://i449.photobucket.com/albums/qq217/Sin_Coast/2012%20MBK%20Tourney/IMGP2515.jpg)

Fish #2
(http://i449.photobucket.com/albums/qq217/Sin_Coast/2012%20MBK%20Tourney/IMGP2526a.jpg)

NSFC (not safe for crotch)

Safer in the tankwell but Alex still got attacked by one of my halibut...it was the crazy/funniest thing I've seen! More on that later--I'm exhausted.

THANK YOU MBK for another great event! I look forward to this each year and still can't believe I won a new kayak.
That's the little one on top...even with its tail in the handle, she jumped 3ft onto Alex's chest and attacked him. Too funny.  :smt044

CONGRATULATION PAT! That first halibut was Huge...when i seen that monster i had a good feeling that my record halibut of 32.8lbs from SCAllens Santa Cruz derby of July 2005 was going to be broken. And with that 33.9lbs or we will just say 34, pound :smt003 Halibut you did just that. and to make sure you got first place, you catch that second halibut that i should of kept since  it didn't want to stay in your kayak and wanted to be with me instead :smt003 That fish surprise the hell out of Pat, Daniel, Steven and especially me when i was parked beside Sincoast to take a picture i uncovered the beast and was getting ready to take the picture when the butt took one big flop and landed on my lap. I had to give it a bearhug and hogtied it from knocking me off my kayak. So, I literally caught a 26lb halibut! Butt, I had to give it back  :smt009 :smt010 :smt003

Also thanks to everyone who helped us out on land!

Pat, I might be in Monterey tonight.  Maybe I'll swing by for a couple fillets.  I'll call you if I make it over there.  Congrats again!   I'm so happy it was a Sin Coast, Dpshim 1 2 punch!

Pat, I hear there are no Halibut to be caught at Albion. Guess you'll just have to bring some.  :smt003

Another awesome event thrown by MBK and our own Allen, thank y'all for your support!! :D

Several nights ago while fishing under the full moon at Lake San Antonio, Pat and I were discussing game plan for Sunday's derby. I got word from my commercial friends that the halis were being caught in 65'-50' at Tioga using squid.

With only 5 hrs to fish and be on land with our stringer, we decided that it was best that we paddle straight out towards Tioga (a good 45min-1hr paddle) rather than slow troll there wasting valuable time. Game plan worked like a charm!! :D

When it was game time, I paddled my ass out toward Tioga wasting no time. I had Nathan and Eugene paddling along with me as well as Scott couple hundred yards of me peddling toward the same direction. As I kept paddling, others had stopped.

Once I got out to my destination, I started rigging my bounce ball troll setup: 3 way swivel w/ 20" line to 1lb weight ball, tied to 4/0 brass/silver dodger & 3' leader with squid.

As I was ready to troll, Pat, Alex and Splashdown arrived. Within couple hundred yards into my troll, I had a big surprising takedown which caught me off guard and assumed it might have temporarily snagged to something on the bottom. I slowed my troll, but nothing.

I continued my troll northward when all of a sudden I hear hooting and hollering by none other than my fishing partner! :D At that moment I turn back and reel in my setup. As I brought it to the surface I noticed that my herring bait was missing 2/3 of its body. Right then I knew I had a takedown earlier. I was also certain because my takedown was in the general area that Pat hooked up :)

After helping my partner take some sweet photo shots, partake in the hali beatdown, and assuming that we strapped that bad boy securely; I tied on a squid and started my troll.

50 paddles in, I got another takedown which I was able to set. I immediately knew I has a hali with its unmistakeable dead weight and its headshakes. I also knew that this was nothing close to what my partner had just caught lol!! :P

As I slowly brought the hali up toward the surface, I was contemplating on how I was going to land this since I no longer use gaffs for fish. I now use my hands or lip gripper to land my fish, with the exception of salmon (net, which I also had on me).

I decided that the net would be the easiest way to land it... WRONG!!! As it came toward the surface I attempted to swoop it in with the net. The Hali went ballistic once it got in, splashing and flopping around until it got out!

After I found out that was the wrong decision lol, I decided to land it with my hands which was an easier move and that I shoulda done in the first place lol. After escaping from the net, I allowed the hali opportunity to calm itself under the surface. As I slowly pulled it toward me with its head under the water, I slipped my hand under its gill and brought him on board. I quickly grabbed my game clip with the other hand and securely slipped the clip in and threw him back in the water :)

I was stoked that not only Pat landed a hali, but I also got one myself! :D Pat comes over to congratulate me and to check out my hali. Initially, I thought mine was possibly a "puny" 25"er after seeing Pat's monster lol. After putting him on the hog trough, we noticed it was at least 30". Boy, your measurements get all messed up when a FAT doormat is present lol!!

Although we had about another hr and half left, both Pat and I were satisfied with our catch and decided to slow troll back in. It couldn't be much longer than 5 min when Pat hooks up with another beast!!! Once we got that on board, we called it quits this time lol!!

It was fantastic to witness Pat catch those beasts, as well as winning this event. I'm so STOKED for ya brother!!

Everyone did a fantastic job, as we saw several halis, nice lings and assorted rockfish! :D It was great seeing and fishing with everyone. I wish I could have stayed longed, bit I had to be at work at 3pm.

Again, it was a blast; and I was glad to represent the A-hulls. 1-2 punch!! :D

Many thanks to you Andy and others who cooked. I volunteered to cook the dogs because that is how I met my friend Aaron. I fished it hard Saturday and Sunday putting in over 25 miles and was whipped. You and Andy were a blessing and another example of the A Hulls setting the standard for what NCKA is all about. Muchas gracias amigos!!!
