Kayak Fly Fishing / Napa River 10/18
« on: October 19, 2015, 08:43:36 AM »
Was going to the forebay on Sat but wind lady said no. Hit Napa yesterday, FF is having issues tracking bottom and keeps resetting so flew blind. Still got into them checking the usual spots. Definitely higher pct. of legals now. Had a couple 22-24" and quite a few other legals, LDR one about 28-30".

Kayak Fly Fishing / Napa River 9/13
« on: September 14, 2015, 10:02:03 AM »
After an excellent few days chasing steelies on the Trinity, I got some intel on the Napa River. Never fished it before so I decided to give it go.

Perfect overcast morning, high tide coefficent,  but no top water activity. FF lit up at all likely places but nothing but dinks. Switched to a 6" clouser which helped a little bit keeping them off. Marks started disappearing as the sun got high so I was stopping at anything. Finally it lit up and I got a nice PB kayak striper on the fly, 32" 12lb. By the time I got it in I couldn't find the marks anymore.

Check it out if you get a chance lots of fish in the system, saw 2 trollers hook up on similar sized fish, all around midday, go figure. Keep moving and you will find them.

Kayak Fly Fishing / Dead in here...
« on: January 30, 2015, 03:29:17 PM »
Dead at work and in this forum so here's some steelhead from the winter season. Picked up a few fish here and there. Tried to get a fish south of SF but I'm 0 for 4 tries down there. Fished the Upper Klamath last week, smaller fish on avg. but there are a lot of fish up there. Had one crazy double digit day on adults 20-24", all wild and a bunch of half pounders (kinda strange for this time of year).

Anyone else chasing steel? I'll be back at it in a couple weeks on the So.Ore coast looking for some bright chrome where you can still hear the ocean...

Kayak Fly Fishing / Fly Tying Day at Cal Fly Shop Tomorrow
« on: December 05, 2014, 02:19:20 PM »
Forgot about this, just popped in my email, some of the best tyers in norcal will be there. I'll probably be there in the afternoon to BS. Their tailgate sessions and seminars are usually good but their fly tying day is exceptional, too bad there stock of materials isn't that great.

Only have FB link...

For Sale / Deluxe Tent Cot
« on: October 07, 2014, 11:57:23 AM »
I have an extra Deluxe Tent Cot I want to get rid of, looking for $80. Paint just worn off the legs where they touch the ground, everything else in great condtion. I believe this size is only sold by Cabela's now, this one does not say Cabela's on it and is standard green. No rain fly.

If there is interest I will set it up, measure it and post some pictures, PM me.

Kayak Fly Fishing / Yuba Egg Bite is On
« on: October 05, 2014, 01:47:37 AM »
Wanted something more challenging than rockfish so floated Hwy 20 bridge to Sycamore solo yesterday. Some salmon on redds, not whole bunch. Epic bite from about 3:30 until dark, big fish.. I pounded them with eggs and other nymphs but all they wanted were eggs. If you can get out in the next week do it. The peak of the bite doesn't last long, I haven't timed it right the last 3 years. With the water so low and clear the fish will probably get wary soon, bring your nymphing A-game, if you only fish dries, pick another time. If you haven't caught a big Yuba bow, you're missing out on the hardest fighting bow in the valley...

Eddyline / New Caribbean 14 Owner
« on: May 11, 2014, 06:06:56 PM »
So I finally retired my 7 year old Trident 13, not just because it was old but because I thought there was something notably better. Thanks to Dan @ Headwaters for hooking me up!

Wanted to paddle it pretty bad so I launched Del Valle for a quickie on the way to Mother's Day Festivities. Half assed rigged the FF, grabbed the fly rod and a couple of clousers. Paddled across the from the boat launch and went about a quarter mile and marked a small school of fish, 3rd cast I pick up a 16-17" striper, boat has MOJO! Paddled all the way to the dam into the wind, very nice! Marked a school of fish off a point near the dam but couldn't get one to cooperate. Drifted back looking for another school and didn't find anything until I was back where I caught the first fish. Bingo, another fish about 20", good few hours considering I haven't fished Del Valle in 3 years.

Don't know what happened to the pic, I think there was too much black and white for the camera to figure out...

Kayak Fly Fishing / Anybody fishing the Trout Opener?
« on: April 21, 2014, 01:48:30 PM »
I've got my bread and butter flies tied up and ready to go to norcal. Low water year so we can pretty much go where we want like summer and should be able to find a place with no other peeps.  Gonna do some more shad recon too, they weren't at the spot last week but hopefully they will be there now...

Kayak Fly Fishing / Feather Spring Steelies Non-yak
« on: April 14, 2014, 09:39:45 AM »
Heard alot of talk of the lower Feather fishing well for spring steelies so I decided to make my one and only trip there this spring. With the outflow of the thermolito basically shutoff the "highflow" area is very fishable. I knew the peeps would be in the low flow so I fished the high flow below the outflow. Found 2 pods of fish and did very well. They were bright, strong and very acrobatic.

Suckers are starting to spawn and caught a bunch of those fair hooked and snagged. 4-5lb sucker is fun on a 5wt., even caught a couple big pike minnows or whatever they are.  It's a perfect storm of bigger food; sucker spawn, alevins and caddis although I did catch one on a mayfly nymph. I "swymphed" unless the run called for the bobber.

Wont to much longer, 70 bridge and taking out in the high flow would be great for a kayak..someday when I have more time.

Kayak Fly Fishing / Yak Fly Line Managment?
« on: December 03, 2013, 10:40:56 AM »
Wondering what people are doing for line management when casting off their kayak, specifically sinking shooting heads and running lines? Also what kind of running line do you use? I was using slick shooter and didn't really have a problem but then my single hand shooting head casting sucks so if I could shoot 25-40ft of line I was happy. Handling of the slick shooter is pretty poor but it goes far. I hear people say they can fish out to 80-100ft on pontoons so that means shooting at least another 20+ft. and a much bigger pile of line.

I think I can just use the rod pod on the Trident as a stripping basket but that would only be stillwater not ocean. I've seen people attach a basket on the side which seems to make sense because then you could do longer strips easier. Have seen a towel draped over your lap and spikes on top of a rod pod too.

Taking a break from steelies/spey rods and gonna take the single hander out to sling clousers at line sides at the Forebay. Flyaker and I had a good 1/2 day yesterday on his little boat and a glassed out lake. Need some work on my single hand shooting head casts and the wind looks like it will lay down through the weekend. I'm no expert on the Forebay, just trying to learn it, company welcome.

Don't know if this was posted already. Kudos to the guy in the boat, it could have turned out differently.

For Sale / Echo TR 12'6" 6wt. 4pc. Spey Rod
« on: July 25, 2012, 01:28:39 PM »
Probably not too many spey guys here but I'll post it anyway. Selling my Echo TR 12'6" 6wt. spey rod, used mostly as a back up, fished only a few times, most recently during the epic shad run on the AR. In excellent condtion, comes with tube and sock. Throws scandi and skagit equally well. Will throw in a Rio 475 Skagit Flight for another $30. Picked up a new rod for the North Umpqua so no need for 2 backup rods. This is a good summer/smaller winter steelhead stick, faster action than the Dec Hogan model. $225, PM if interested.
