Planned on fishing Moss Landing. Fog was thick. Decided to head to Monterey instead. Beautiful day on the water, but only caught bait.

Good call. It's no joke to go out in fog without having ample experience in the area and redundant navigation tools.
-
Got stuck out in the fog once already. Rolled in faster than I could get to shore. Water and wind was calm. Hard to tell which direction I was heading, so I anchored down to wait it out. I keep thinking I need to add a floating ball compass to my Yak.

A compass is an absolute must-have, IMHO, regardless of whether you have GPS or not. I'd recommend one compass fixed to to the kayak (much easier to maintain an accurate bearing) and one on your person (in PFD pocket, for example). They don't have to be fancy---I like this one:

Btw, I really enjoy fishing in heavy fog, provided I know the area and have (as Eric so aptly put it) "redundant navigation tools".

What were you fishing for?

More generally, why so few reports from Monterey? Everyone knows there are no fish in Santa Cruz, but it seems there are no fishermen in Monterey...

A group of us hit the Sonoma Coast on Saturday and the fog was really thick there as well. Mix in a decent swell and it was a bit creepy.

I was going to try trolling for some stripers. I remember going out there as a kid in my uncles Boston Whaler and knocking them dead. I didn't bring any jigging tackle with me. When I hit Monterey I started trolling predator minnows, but after covering a few miles and not having any luck I came across some bait on my sonar. So I caught some mackerel and switched to live bait. Still didn't have any luck. The day was beautiful and I had a great time on the water.
I'm still learning where to fish in the Ocean. Most of my trips have been to Monterey and Bodega bay. Any advice on places to try would be great.

+1
Years ago Joe and I had that happen off of Natural Bridges, several miles from the harbor where we launched. We could see it coming, but within minutes were surrounded by thick fog. It was actually kind of a wake up call for both of us, we were essentially lost at sea. Thanks to my trusty hand held compass in my pfd, I had taken a quick reading, and then tried to stick to the heading while listening to the surf crashing on the rocks and fog horn to keep us on course and get us back to safety. Now I have the Revo with a Ritchie inboard compass installed, Lowrance ff with gps, and a Rip Curl compass watch.

Glad I read this. I'm going to throw a compass in my dry bag from now on, just in case gps doesn't work
