In November 2010, my friend Mahito passed away. He is the one who got me into kayak fishing--and I will always be grateful for that gift. Thanks dude!

His intro: http://www.norcalkayakanglers.com/index.php?topic=4835.msg39239#msg39239 (http://www.norcalkayakanglers.com/index.php?topic=4835.msg39239#msg39239)

A day I will never forget: http://www.norcalkayakanglers.com/index.php?topic=5842.0 (http://www.norcalkayakanglers.com/index.php?topic=5842.0)
With followup of sad news.

We were friends in college and then I didn’t see him for a few years, when all the sudden I see a post on NCKA by a member w/screen name “mahito.” I didn’t even know he was a fisherman! But we reconnected and started fishing together. I had been lurking NCKA because I wanted to buy a kayak & learn more about it.
It turns out he’d just bought a used Malibu 2 from MBK.
So...with some encouragement from Chris Mbyakker (who’d been telling me fantastic tales of catching 30+ fish per day from his kayak—he usually told me about that while we sat on the shore catching 3-4 fish per day lol) we decided to go for it!
First trip we went from Coral St in PG and the 2 of us must’ve looked like the SS Kookship w/the 2 of us pushing 475lbs on that tandem in board shorts. We both caught some rockfish and I ended the day with a nice ling. At the time, it felt great because it was something exciting and new...fishing the kelpbeds from a 12ft plastic boat in the Pacific ocean with my buddy Mahito. Most of my other friends thought it was crazy; I thought it was badass.

I truly had no idea what I was in for...from that day the Madness grew as I discovered a new passion: kayak fishing! I wanted to go kayak fishing every weekend. But I didn’t have a kayak yet, so Mahito would generously lend me his yak. He was a generous guy like that...if he couldn’t go, he would almost force me to take his yak out. And he never asked for anything in return. Heck, it seemed like every time I returned his yak, he’d also feed me some BBQ and a beer! He loved to Q.
Thanks to Mahito, I have found a new passion in life and made a ton of friends who also love kayak fishing. As a member of this community, I have grown as an angler and as a person. I owe him a lot.  Although, he’d never accept credit for something like that.  A bunch of his friends got together last night and we raised a glass in his honor. Thanks again for helping me remember a close member of our family who was taken away from us so early and unexpectedly, Cheers!

I wouldn't say rest in Piece. I'd say catch as many as you can before I get there.

this poem says more about Joel than I can ever express:

May your days and nights be filled with peace,
And may those you love be near.
May the solace of that closeness
Banish any hint of fear.

May the joy you've brought to others
Fill your soul now with that light,
And the memories of happy times
Fill your dreams through darkest night.

For you've lent your strength to many.
You've upheld us in our strife.
Now let those of us who love you
Let you know just how your life

Has been the brightest beacon
For you've shown us how to bear
With great dignity and courage
Both the bad times and the fair.

As a mentor and a leader
You have always been our guide.
As a friend there's been none better.
May you know all this with pride.

All our prayers and thoughts are with you.
May you feel their soothing grace.
May our care and loving hold you
Here within that sacred space.

And may God then grant you courage
When the time to fight is o'er
And be waiting for you smiling,
When you reach his lofty door.

For you'll be borne by angels
That our Lord has sent for you
And in wholeness be rewarded
All your pain will then be through.

Sorry to bring this thread back. But I just wanted to make a brief post to let people know that a fellow member passed away recently (back on Valentines day). I just found out last night.

Howard Suzuki was known as Rising_Sun here, but he was an active participant on many different fishing clubs/sites. He was always one of the first to offer help or bring food to events. He attended the last two O'Neill Forebay Fish & Chills. Last year he had to leave early so he simply gave me his potluck contribution to share with everybody...bunch of quality steaks & fish if I recall.
Not sure about the causes or what happened. But it's a good reminder to appreciate what you/we got. Don't take shit for granted. RIP uncle Howie.

Thank you for sharing this pat. I was thinking about doing the same recently just wasn't sure what to write.
He fell ill shortly after last years fnc. He meet up with a local Facebook group on Pedro. At the end of the day he never returned to the launch. The group he was with was notified that he was found drifting slumped over in his kayak. He was air lifted to the hospital where he had surgery. Then moved to Arizona to recover with the aid of his family.

RIP Howard...

I chatted with him on Facebook several times, he was always super friendly, and I remember when he was found drifting in his kayak.

I will keep Howard and his family in my thoughts and prayers...

Sincerely,

Jim

NCKA Forever! I'm in! Howard's there and I'm sure Joel and Chief got him all set up... Living while here makes it easyer when someone passes, you know they LIVED while here and had some peace on the water. Prayers of comfort for the family. He's off fishing.... See ya all when we get there (NO RUSH ON THAT) :smt044

Really sorry to hear this, Howard was a great guy.   I met him through Coastside and he fished on our boat out of HMB.   He was an excellent fisherman and a great contributor to all the forums.  He messaged me when I signed on here to go kayaking together, I'm sorry we didn't get to do that in this life.
