I went to buy a lowrance at BassPro and then I got the bad news about most fish finder are not waterproof  :smt013
What's your take on this? I was bummed and pulled back about buying one now...

The sales guy did tell me if I buy their 3 yr warranty plan, they will take it back no questions ask and give you a full credit for the original price paid towards a new finder down the line. The cost of the extended warranty for the model I wanted was about $160.

I went over with my Lowrance Hook model and it was submerged for over a minute. It still works and is waterproof

They have a rating similar to a watch or go pro you cam submerge them but how much force it hits the water with can make the difference I had one a few years ago that did not survive and a newer one that’s handled pretty heavy exposure sailing in high wind and
3 1/2 foot waves hitting it for several hours
glade you made it
now let's get our fish on

The map card slot cover can make a difference. If it stays closed it has a better chance of surviving.

The BP guy said only one of the Hook model was waterproof bc it was made especially for kayaks. I forget whether it was the 4 or 5.

Lowrance HD elite 5. Flipped several times for a couple minutes and still works.

The BP guy might not know what he is talking about.  It happens.  There are a couple Lowrance guys on this forum that can probably be of better assistance, but the answer has already been given  they are'nt technically waterproof but they can handle normal conditions and an occasional spill just fine.  Seal up the map card slot and use dielectric grease on your connections and go fishing.

Tape shut the slot cover and add fuse on your power line.  Those two will increase chance of survival.

I'd presume most fish finders are water resistant. You can find out yourself by looking at its IP rating (in product description, owners manual). For example, the Lowrance Hook series finders have an IPX7 rating. Meaning they can  withstand immersion in water up to 1 meter for up to 30 minutes.
How this holds up in practice is another matter. I'd definitely follow advice others have given.
Sorry if this has already been mentioned. Can't see some posts in Tapatalk.

Most, if not all, fish finders have appropriate IP rating.  However, don't rely on that.  Do your part to increase its chance of survival.  If a boat flips, he/she has other things to worry about.  If a kayak flips, we can get back up.

Somebody (Keith?) mentioned about putting dielectric grease on the card slot, does that work?

That’s sucks. Are you going to be at RTS on Saturday for the seminar?

Fish finder flipping? I thought this thread was going to be about a new show on HGTV...

But seriously, I have an older Garmin FF and it has spent a lot of time  underwater, some of that while being thrashed about in the surf zone. It’s still going strong. From posts on this forum, I’ve gotten the impression that Lowrance FF are fragile butterflies in comparison.
Please don't spoil my day, I'm miles away...
