Kayak locks

Anyone got any opinions on locks for sit inside kayaks while on the roof racks? 

I use a cable through the Mirage drive hole connected to a small bicycle U lock around one of the rack towers. No idea how much of a deterrent it actually is.

A basic $10 bicycle cable lock saved my kayak from tweeker theft a few years back.

There's a company that makes cam straps that are keyed to lock.  Never seen one in person though. Kinda pricey too.

I have a set of these. They are called kanulocks and indeed are pricey ($90 from Americas largest online retailer). Inside the straps are two 3/16” steel cables to prevent them from being cut with a pocket knife. Anybody with a set of wire snips and 10 seconds could cut through these straps. Also, the locks are pretty lousy. The keys are very small and every time I’ve used them I worry they might break off inside the lock. My review is they are not worth the price.

I bought them to secure surfboards to my roof rack on Southern California surf trips where the car would be parked unattended on the PCH and they have (so far) deterred the lazy theives. I still have my gear. Hopefully I can continue to be lucky and avoid the ambitious ones.

There are other locking straps out there but I haven’t tried them.

Id probably bolt on some kind of heavy duty pad eye or something to lock through if I had a sit inside

I bought a pack of 3 6' cable locks at home depot for $15. I put them through the scupper hole and my roof rack.

What kind of attachment point for a lock does the sit inside kayak have?

Sit on tops are easy with the scupper holes. This is what I use for those.

Get a large stainless steel pad eye and attach it to the top of the kayak somewhere where it will be easy to access but not in your way.
Use RED Loctite on the threads. Use a decent backing (large washers or some kind of plate) so the pad eye cannot be pulled out.
I use a Master Python lock. If you go with this one make sure it will fit through the pad eye before you install it. This will save you a MAJOR PITA.
Not only will this keep the tweakers from grabbing your kayak but it adds an extra level of safety from losing your kayak while on the road.

There are kayak cable locks that loop around both ends of your kayak.

What I did to lock my surfboard to car-top racks:  Cut some chain just so you can loop it over the board and back and lock it - one chain on front rack, one on back.  I used two padlocks. 
   The board was wider in the middle than ends, so if the chains were snug, it couldn't be slipped back and forth and out of the chains.  Of course, someone with bolt cutters or a hacksaw could get the board.  I just used them when I wanted to go inside for an hour or so, never overnight outside.

Master Python locks thru the scupper holes. That's how I do it. Works pretty good.

It's a sit inside Dave......no scupper holes.  It has been suggested that I install a metal pad eye to run the cable through.....hmmmmmm!

Use the master python lock 20 ft and wrap the bow and stern in loops and since it down tight if there’s no wiggle room it can’t be pulled off the rack. The ends are narrower then the middle
