Well it started out kind of marginal but turned out to be a great day. Over-slept and didn't get to LS until 715AM. Hooked up with Fishunter, Mickfish and ChuckE at the main rec area and launched around 745AM. Fished the area near the power plant with Chuck and Adam. About 5 minutes into the troll for steelies, my 30 year old Penn spinning reel has a seizure so I decide to repair it on the water. The only problem is that the wind and chop are really nasty and I am no Alan Tani. :smt005 I eventually repaired the reel, but it costs me almost an hour of fishing time. I really wanted to catch a steelie so I targeted them trolling and jigging for 3 hours for nada. Marked a lot of them from 60-150 ft down but couldn't get them to hit a jig or spoon. Around 11 AM, smelling a 3rd straight skunk, I gave up on steelies and switched to bass. Paddled over to near the launch ramp where Adam and Chuck were working the coves for bass. Switched to a Shadrap JSR5 silver/black on the outside and Shadrap SR5 silver/green/black, on the inside trolling and wacky senko casting. Paddled past the point of a medium sized cove and marked a few fish. Noticed Adam inside the cove working senkos and asked him if he had any luck and he said no. Just as the Shadraps pass the point of the cove both clickers go off, DOUBLE HOOKUP!!! :smt003 The inside rod looked like a small fish but the outside rod was major bendo and taking line. There was a submerged tree to my right about 50 ft off the bow so I decided to turn left and paddle 50ft to open water before starting the fight. I picked up the outside rod and OMG, this fish had some weight to it. After 5 minutes and 3 runs, I was thinking that I should haved used 12# test instead of 8# since I was making little ground and I had 100 ft of line out. I had this flashback of Abkings lost giant fishfish, so I started swearing at the fish and after another 5 minutes brought the fish to the boat. Man this fish was a toad, 8.5# on the boga. Called Adam and Chuck who came over to take pictures. Released the fish unharmed and Chuck threw a lure at him as he swam off. :smt044 I decided to pack it up and to my surprise, I still had a fish on the other rod. :smt005 Brought the little fellow in and released him unharmed. Made it to my business meeting in Santa Rosa on time, although a little fishy smelling and home in time to see the UCLA game. BTW, Chuck's new Hobie Revo is the bomb.

WOW Scott, nice fish! :smt007 Thems is some nice AOTY points! :smt001 And the double hook-up - still waiting for one of those on the yak. Never caught a bass on the troll before, probably pretty cool. I've always been told that the big hogs don't work very hard for food, you must have drug that JSR-5 right across his grill.
Sorry to hear about the lack of love on the steelies :smt011 but I'm sure that the big mama made up for that.
Michael
-
Good job Scott thats a nice bass for Sonoma! The smallie at the same time is cool.
-
Very nice fish! Way to go! On the troll even, with a double hook-up. Sweet. :smt003
Bryan
-
Nice fish, Spoke to a acquittance of mine who fishes LS for bass once or twice A WEEK and he stated that this has been one of the poorest years to date that he can remember. You made it look easy, good job.
-
scott, you should get extra points for landing a fish that weighs more than the breaking test of your line!
and a two-species double, that is a winner too!
looks fun, I was surfing today, but maybe I will do a little trolling tomorrow.
John
-
SOLID double...real nice work Scott!!!
-
Very cool Scott - congrats!
-
Way to go Scott you finally got the fresh water skunk off and a monster to-boot, is that your all time record and realest to fight another day nice job :smt003.

-
Great report, Scott. Gotta love the double! Sounds like another great NCKA hookup.
Good Times. :smt001
I had this flashback of Abkings lost giant fishfish, so I started swearing at the fish and after another 5 minutes brought the fish to the boat.
It's become a technique! :smt044 Love it!! :smt003

Thanks guys. Yes this is my personal record LMB. My previous record was 4#. I am much more of a trout angler than bass angler inspite of my screen name. Yesterday I was just lucky on the "hail Mary" troll.

Neat report & pictures......and WOW........the lake level has really come up.
I clicked on your report specifically hoping to see pix of the shoreline.
I kind of figured that this would be a "bad water year" for Sonoma.
I like that lake.
Nice place.

WTScore GB!!!!
Nice Smallie and Hawg..... :smt004

Fun weekend, I fished hard for 2 released lmb and a big fat pig of a crappie that came home with me. Chuck gave me another so we had a big fish din din last night, some kind of tastey!
Camping, company was great, do another soon.
-
Nice Scott :smt007 just take the fish and run :smt002
Got to the lake at O dark thirty waited for the boys to show wanted to fish the dam area a little but I knew Rick and I had a long paddle and it was getting windy fast. So I made my way up the lake ducking into coves along the way picking up a few Chunky LMB, but I wanted Steel 1 quick drive by for paddling the whole lake into a stiff breeze :smt013. Got to camp set up took a break then fished the area around the camp for a couple of dinks. Then the Boys started showing up and the laughs began, had a some good food did a little shore fishing some more laughs. I was feeling a little sleepy so I decided to roll down the hill to my tent but that didn't work so I drug myself. Got up the next morning to glass but with the high clouds I figured that the wind would kick in soon so after coffee Thanks Adam I fished with the boys foe awhile then trolled down to the the main lake where Ben and I trolled for a couple of hours Ben got a Slab Crappie and I got a few LMB but no Steel. I saw Rick shoot past me and I wanted to fish the Main part of the lake so I gave a Radio Good Bye to the boys and started trolling once again, the main part of the lake was like an ocean and I was getting blown at about 3mph using my paddle as a rudder. Picked up a few smallies on the troll and ducking into coves. Fishing was slow but there were fish there to catch the wind just made it tough. Paddling in with all my gear was fun I wanna do this again but stay 2 nites.
Thanks guys I had a great time.

I almost forgot the little present somebody left in my tankwell :smt013
-
Scott, nice combo of bass and a personal best, good deal.
Ben, nice crappie :smt007 And some of the guys dont want panfish in the AOTY. Its bigger than your bass.
Mickfish, looks like a nice get together. Even thou you got crapped on :smt044.
wished I could of made it.
-
Given a choice, I think I'd like to have this crappie in my kayak
(http://www.norcalkayakanglers.com/index.php?action=dlattach;topic=12389.0;attach=26780;image)
much more so than this crappy on my kayak.

Nice report guys, glad to see some decent fish caught, esp. that bass Scott. I had fun kayak-in camping and fishing Lake Sonoma this time of year a few years ago at Skunk Camp. I've been meaning to do it again, but just never got around to it.
Brian
-
Scott, congrats on that big bass. You did much better in half a day than some of us did the whole weekend.
All of you AOTY contenders can relax. Scott told me he didn't registered this year.
I got hit by two steelhead near the main launch ramp. The first one hit a trolled shad rap and got off before I could grab the rod. For awhile, I thought it was still hooked because when I looked back, I saw a steelhead doing several summer salts. I trolled back around a few more times and the second fish hit HARD. I've never seen such an aerobatic fish. With Adam watching, I fought it all the way to the boat and got it ready to slide into the net, when all of a sudden, it made one last lunge for the surface and spat the rap. It was gorgeous fish around the 19" range. Had I caught that steelie, it could have completed my little Lake Sonoma Grand Slam. My score for the weekend was one smallie, several decent LMB, a big crappie.
It was good fishing and camping fun with the guys. Thanks to Mickfish for posting the hook-up, reserving the site, and bringing those delicious steaks.
Rick, it was great to meet you. Thanks for the wine, chili, and beer!
Adam, Ben, Frank... It was good fishin'-n-chillin' with you guys as usual!
-
Thanks to Mike for setting this up and for bringing the steaks!
Rick and Mike were at the launch and loading up for the long haul to camp when I arrived. Chunk and I were gonna fish the dam area and then pack yak up and drive to the much closer YortyCreek lot, then paddle fromthere to camp=30min.
It was windy when we got there, but started to calm through the day. I hunted the same areas, with the same lures as last year and came up DRY! Chuck and Scott headed straight for the Steelies. After find NO LUV! I trolled a shadrap and a DeepDvrCrawdad over, around and under the whole area! Caught up with Chuck and planned to troll to the launch, pack-up and head to the Yorty Lot. We troll and troll and troll somemore....then as we round the last point before giving it up, Scott calls on the VHF "I just got a BIG BASS", Chuck asks,"where?".
Scott replies,"right where Adam just left" :smt012 I paddle around the point to get some pics and Chuck was right behind me! That thing was FAT! and so ugly, that it was pretty! I'm DAMNED sure I saw that beast and her best friend on the FF a couple of times off that point!! :smt012 I guess the SenkoSnake was just too much..it's tummy could only fit a ShadRad?!
I'm so glad you had enough time to come up and get a trophy LMB/smallie double hookup and make your meeting too! Did you explain your MADNESS, while showing off the pics?! :smt003
So that was good cause to stay and troll that area for another couple of more runs/hours, right?
....a few pics and many more to come, stay tuned for more entertainment!
-
sounds like another great time was had by all.
must have been FREEZING!!
Scott's bass is pretty impressive. :smt007
-
On Sun. morning I saw a small alum boat pull up to the opposite shore two guys got out a hiked up the hill aways, then I started hearing Mooch's famous call coming from the hillside for about 40 mins then I hear a cautious answer for about 10min them blam. About 30 minutes later here they come racing down the lake holding up a nice Tom.
-
...while we paddled the same spot, Chuck yells out "did you see that fish jumpin? I think he was on for a second?" That's ALL I needed to hear, so we paddled some more in hopes of finding some hungry steelies.
Thanks when Chuck got one to hit and it went Ballistic right in front of me. I hurried to get an Aireal Shot, but came up with a BrokenHeart one instead.
pics1&2~ From a cat-nappin to head slappin! ChampChuckE
trolled for another hour for NOT and then pack-it and drove to the Yorty lot.
-
Scott's bass is pretty impressive. :smt007
here is the better angle....see its' fat guts? (it looks like he's already celebrating with one of those funny lil hand-rolled cigaretts) :smt003 but I know he dosen't do THAT stuff.
We got our "special pass" for an overnite stay in the lot, packed up and paddled/searched for camp to the theme of Sanford&Sons! da -da -da -da'da!
-
Nice Scott :smt007 just take the fish and run :smt002
Mike -
Thanks for organizing. Sorry I had to fish and run but with 2 kids in college, sometimes you have to put in some overtime. Will try to make the overnight next time. It was pretty cool to catch a big fish before work. Made me feel like Freddie. :smt003
Scott
-
MIKE! at least it tried to put it/them into the center of the circle! too funny!
are you sure it was S#i+, did it smell?
As Chuck and I paddled insearch of our camp, past many of hard-to-pass by areas without tossing a lure, we wondered how much further and called Frank, who was already at camp relaxing, we asked if we are close and if he could yell or whistle, to reassuring us.....we didn't hear a sound...KEEP PADDLING!!
...arrived at camp, and joined the crew. Set up our tents too close to Franks :smt044 and then remembered that it's OK! I brought the EAR PLUGS and will get SOME sleep.
However, Ben chose to pick-up camp to find a QUIETER area as far away as possible, but NOT FAR ENOUGH!
Rick saved my ass by bringing some Great HomeMadeChili to complement Mikes' steaks!...my planned Gourmet Rice-A-Roni came out like Rice-a-PHONEY! with a crunch? told everyone that was the almond slivers I added.
-
Woke up, made some coffee, woke others up doing so, then hit the area for A FISH! .....I didn't even plan on tossing a senko around AT ALL!, it was too easy last year and I thought I'd be enjoying the same this year....smallies&largies were slamin the 7"er....last year.
pic1~Bens' shoreline estate and departure
pic2&3~ da'camp from atop.
-
......every turn, point, cove, submerged tree and finger looked like it would be holding FISH.....so not TRUE....there's TOO MANY places for them to hide.
pic3~ after pulling to shore for relief, I see a few couples making future bedding plans....no wonder they're not eating!
-
...after having to switch over to my Go-to lure, FINALLY!,skunk be gone!
Fooled three of them with a 7"senko wacky style. It was getting close to checkout time, so we picked up camp and headed home!
pic1~ Ben&Chuck posing with their Slab-ulous Crappies
Ben and Frank stayed later than Chuck and myself. Hope they found what they were looking for!
A great time out with the fellas like always.....maybe we can do something simular next month? CSBA Tourney@Mendo? see you there!

Those underwater shots are once again really nice Adam.

I have to put out a big thanx on the chow, I packed backpack style w/freeze dried bags, good ones, but Mikes steaks were OFF THE HOOK, and with the killer chillie and the SF treat, I felt as fat as the bass Scott hooked. BTW, what a fish that was! I saved my bags for later...This lake is nothing but structure, wild looking trees, lots of game, eagles and critters. And fat fish.
-
Wrong pics... I think these are the ones...

Ben~ no more fish after we departed! I see that silver/blk lure and BANG in the pic, is that what you were using? (pm me if you want to just KEEP SECRETS)
..and DON'T mention that Rice-A-Foney! :puker:
maybe that HIGH ALTITUDE messed it up? :beat

..and DON'T mention that Rice-A-Foney! :puker:
No doubt. If you wanna get hella asian status you have to bring a rice cooker to the next fishin' and chillin' event. :thumright: (and make sure to bring Japanese style rice. No basmati :smt002)

Thanks for sharing guys - looks like a great trip!
Great underwater shots Adam - love that head-on shot with the senko.
OK - I'll bite, what's the story with the white car "in the rough". Some NCKA-mandated poocher punishment?.....aftermath of the Sat night party?......???? No need to reply if there are pending legal issues :smt044
Take care - Bird

That was the gang of Rice-a-Roni lovin' axe murders that escaped into those hills from that Sonoma County "facility"?????

Hey Z -
Lay off my buddie. Adam was just trying to "match the hatch" with the cowboy steak theme. We already know that anyone who makes their own furikake like you is hella asian. Just joking of course. :smt044 BTW, to be hella asian, you cant use a rice cooker, you have to start a fire by rubbing two chopsticks together, wash the rice in lake water and cook it in an iron pot. Then of course, season it with your home made furikake. :smt003
Scott

Great pics - wish i was there :smt012

The car was empty, was obviosly going too fast, oops!
Wasnt the same without ya Mooch!

You guys are really nailing em!
Nice LMB Scott! That shadrap (silver pattern) really works for me too. I remember you said once that was one of your favorite lures. Congrat! you finally got that skunk off your back.
Chuck, I like the color of your new revo. Any change on the boat besides the drive?

They need to recognise your suffering from it! I'll give em' a call to let them know MY feelings OK! .....stand by for results

Mike - since I couldn't be there to share in the campfire tales of ghost encounters, favorite fishing lures, lost loves, alien abductions, fishing adventures, hot cars, UFO sightings, fishing exagerations, power tool injuries, etc., etc. - I thought the least I could do was to contribute a classic camping - axe murder story.
I'm sorry - I didn't think Adam would take it seriously and sabotage his Roni to avoid a possible enocunter with the
Roni-gang!!!!! :smt005 :smt006

Found this really cool, old, blast from the past post and thought dang these guys did it right. Lake Sonoma is where I was introduced to kayak fishing and it will always be a special place for me. Thanks for that Mike.
Where have the OGs gone?

Those were my lurking days!
Now some of my best friends. :smt001
Thanks for the blast from the past.

GOOD TIMES IT WAS!!!!!! I've been spoiled rotten with the ease of catching easily fooled rockfish.
