So I just got my new outback and I’m tying to figure out where some good  locations are to mount a rod holder for trolling. I feel like the recessed areas by the map pockets are too thin walled to take the stress of trolling deep for salmon w/ a deep 6 or lead.

The space in front of the front (useless unless love bait fishing or dead sticking) seems like a good area, but it’s not very flat.

Any ideas guys?

Also, what kind do y’all like?

Cheers for the answers/ideas.

Just remember to use some kind of backing plate.  I installed Scotty rod holders and for my DR mount I have 3/16" plate, cut, filed and drilled to fit just behind the seat left side in the flat recessed area just in front of rear in-hull rod holder.  I recall I was just able to reach with what seemed like half my body and (Dumb hand) left arm shoved into my center hatch, straining to reach the back SS nuts in the backing plate.

Here is how I have my scotty base setup. Total 3 mounts. All in recessed area. The front red is for rod goes across the boat, rod tip facing the blue circle (fish finder). This way the fish finder and rod tips are close to each other which makes very easy to watch both. The green circle is where I put the downrigger. It is right at my left arm which makes easy enough to operate. The back red is for secondary rod holder trolling in lake. I normally put one rod on DR and toplining the other for trout. For sturgeon, I use one red and the green with balancer. Hope this helps.
