Title: Raptor SOT setups and goodies
Post by: RUDEDOG on June 16, 2015, 08:19:11 PM
I have a Raptor SOT and I absolutely love it!!!!! I have been curious to see how some have rigged their yak.  I just don't want to drill holes in my yak and then find that there were better ways to set it up :smt013 . I installed a fishfinder (lowrance 4) in the center storage compartment between the legs. I did this so I could put the cover over it when the FF is not in use.   To my dismay, every time I paddle it dumps water all over it.  So now I'm going to get Baitman's brilliant storage extender and put the FF somewhere else in the yak. Any advice on rigging and or pics would be awesome! Thanks for all your help!

Hey Rudedog, We're in the same boat (literally). I bought my sot Raptor from Jim about 3 weeks ago. Getting a Lowrance too. I've decided to mount my ff right behind the bow storage cover. I'll be mounting an 8 inch rail on the angled flat portion of the yak between the foot peg area. Then with various yak parts, I'll mount the Lowrance on the rail. It will come with a long arm (8 inches) so I can pull it in closer to me when I need to and move it forward way outta my way whenever I see fit. No pics yet as I just ordered the parts today. Haven't decided on the transducer mount yet. I can rig something temporary until I decide on a permanent solution. I may install it in-hull but there is good and bad with that. Let me know what you decide. I'm curious.

this is what i did when i had a raptor.

i used a scotty rod holder mount and placed it in the middle. it worked but sometimes i would knock on it with my paddle when i'm paddling.

     Rudedog,,,
Water won't hurt your FF.    Do you have drip rings on your paddle?  Those help.
What FF do you haVe?      Bring it down to my shop in Watsonville some time.     We offer a variety of rigging services.     We now have Keel Easy available.  I can install it while you relax and drink a beer. :smt002
I will also be bringing in some Yak Attack products in the near future.
If you're on Facebook,  Join our Raptor Owners Group.   You'll see what others are doing to rig their Raptors.

I did the same with the fish finder in center, the yakattack stuff fits perfectly.

Chuck, I'm looking for some of the parts you used to install your ff. You mind sharing how to get those black round connectors you are using to pass the wiring thru your yak hull?  I saw a white clamshell one but I'd prefer the color and style you have. Looks less bulky. Also, the connector you are using to run your power wires thru your battery box.

Thanks,
Mondo

Although I prefer the hobie ones a little better, more expensive but well worth it in my opinion.

+1 on the Hobie ones but I too have used the West Marine ones.  Like the Hobie MUCH better though.  I think Headwaters stocks them too (locally).

I've gotta swing by the new shop one of the lunch hours Jim!  I've been RIGHT THERE several times this week (over at Mercury Metals, Fastnel or Praxair) & forgot to drop by.

381 Pine ST     Stop by after work Bill.     I'm usually there till 6.

Re Thru hulls.       West Marine is only $ 6.99    VS  17.99 for the Hobie ones.

Yes, the WM ones are quite a bit cheaper.  The Hobie ones have nice sealing inserts for a variety of wire sizes AND include a blank (block off) plug in the event you remove your electronics but leave the wire seal behind.  The Hobie ones include 2 feedthru's in a pack though so it's only $4 difference.  The only issue I've had with the W.M ones is the tiny screws used to secure them are awfully close to the edge of the hole drilled to feed the neck of the clamshell thru & often the screws break thru the edge of the main hole if one is not very careful.

yeah, there is a price difference, but since the hobies come in two packs, its not that much more.  worth the extra $2 each for the rubber fittings.  easy to remove and adjust if you have new wiring.  Honestly I'm surprised no one else makes a similar one for cheaper.

And actually, the plug itself is cheaper - $5 or so.  The increased cost is for the rubber inserts in the kit.

+1

The Hobie ones are awesome. I use one to route my FF cables and the other one to route a CamelBak tube (the CamelBak bladder is stored inside the hull).

Awesome info gents! Thanks Jim I think I might take you up in that offer soon.  I might try the Paddle rings to see if that helps.

Here's how I currently have my set up. I like that I can hide the FF when not in use. I have my transducer mounted thrrough a scooper hole so I wouldn't have to put more holes in the yak.

Sorry to ride on Rudedog's post but some of my  ff parts are trickling in.I'm about to drill the first hole on my new Raptor "dun dun dunnnnn!!" I have a question on the Yak Attack geartrac install. It's an 8" gear track. Do you folks dab a little of that marine goop in the holes you drill before you install the screws maybe for a little overkill satisfaction or am I wasting my time perhaps even making it worse?

Every single hole I drill in a kayak gets goop.

If you have a washer and nut on the back side,  water is not going to seep in.    Goop is a bit overkill.  IMHO

The one thing that does leak plenty is those rivets.   About all you can do is dab a bit of sealant on the head and try to press it in.

Rudedog, I've attempted to upload pics of my progress for you to see but it's been failing so far. Not exactly sure why yet. They are jpegs. Newbies are allowed to upload pics right?  Otherwise, I'll just upload it on google drive later and share the link.

probably the file sizes are too large.  shrink them down and try uploading again!

That's possible. Smallest pic was 3.6Meg. Got a new phone and had it set to max quality. I'll tweak it and give it a go later. Thank you

Hi folks, I just tried running a Lowrance 5 transducer cable though  the Hobie thru hull connector just for kicks. It won't fit. The transducer connector is just a little too big for the backend Hobie connector  tightening nut. Power cable is fine of course since one end is just wire. I'm still unsure where to mount the transducer so it may be a non-issue for me but if you're going to mount a thru hull transducer and you have a Lowrance 5,  you will need something else. Probably the wm connector Jim was saying to get in the first place. lol

This is the connector I bought.

Try again it fits.  It's tight but it will definitely fit.

Gave it another try. Lined it up as and forced it thru and it popped in. Yay!!  It does a little damage to the threads of the locking nut but it trued up after screwing it in. Thanks for letting me know it does in fact fit. You saved me some time and money from having to get another part.

Pics Mondo !     For large files  I send a photo to myself as an email,,,which gives the option of what file size to send it as.   Save that , then post it up.    I'd like to see what you've accomplished.
How's that swivel rack working out?

Lol, my newer phone takes 16Meg pics. Freaking amazing! Jim, I still love my swivel rack. I mastered loading/unloading it on my suv so I'm in/out of the water in no time. I added an 18"strap on the rear right handle so my 5'6" height no longer requires a step stool. With your custom kart, I'm in and out of the water in one trip unlike before. If needed, I can take my kart with me too with no issues.
