General Fishing Tips / Re: Brand of Braid

I have two Avet SX / Phenix 806 setups. Great “do it all” combo for just about any Bay Area saltwater fishing. Good choice.

Word is the bite is ON at Duxbury. That’s where I’d go if I were you.

Hey, Cam! I remember fishing with you out of Shelter Cove years ago… You actually make a “cameo appearance” in a salmon video I posted. [emoji23]

Welcome to the Bay. I live up the way a bit in Sebastopol, so probably will see you out there some time. (I’ll be honest… These days I’m more likely to be out there in my Arima, but I still kayak, I swear! [emoji849])

Does DFG monitor these sites?  It seems like posting pictures repeatedly of illegal takes really incriminates oneself.  I guess they would need to match screenname with person...  He is not doing a very good job of hiding his location and habits, including killing cohos.  Even if there was a chance of leniency for first time offenders, twice in a week is pretty bad, especially when many folks have called it out in a semi-educational way.
I really doubt DFW monitors NCKA or Coastside, unless by chance a few of their employees are anglers, too…

I don’t think the financial side pans out when you compare the required man hours to the potential “prize” of a single coho citation. They have bigger fish to fry, so to speak… (Sturgeon poaching operations, for example.)

Correct…. A kayaker by the name of 415FishingFanatic posted this on Coastside… (I zoomed in and cropped, but didn’t mess with the photo any other way).

General Fishing Tips / Re: Bleed 'em better?
« on: August 23, 2022, 11:49:07 AM »
Here’s a tip…

Blood wants to clot. And if it clots before the fish is fully bled out, you’ll have bloody filets.

When I’m dealing with a salmon on my kayak, I bonk it, game clip it, cut all the gills on both sides, then drop it back into the water. But don’t just let it sit there. Grab it by the tail and it around in the water, massage down the back toward the gills, reach in and jiggle the gills around, etc.  Basically you’re trying to keep the blood moving (out) and do everything you can to prevent the blood from clotting at the gills, which might make it seem like the fish is fully bled out before it really is.

Similar deal on my boat, except I use a 5 gallon bucket full of water (again with the shaking by the tail, jiggling around, massaging, rubbing gills where you cut them, etc, to work all the blood out before it clots). Swap out the water once or twice until no more blood is coming out.

General Talk / Sweat Issues in Hobie Outback
« on: July 26, 2022, 11:04:50 AM »
I had a similar problem when I got my Hobie and only had a wetsuit. After a long day of salmon trolling the backs of my knees would be bright red and raw from all the sweat and chafe. Saved my pennies and bought a Kokatat Angler suit. Problem solved.

Aside from that, you could try a product like Run Guard, or any similar “anti chafe” product. (I can’t comment on whether this stuff is compatible with neoprene - maybe test it first…)

General Fishing Tips / Re: Tangled 3-way halibut rig
« on: June 07, 2022, 02:04:01 PM »
this is part of why I run heavy weights. i like to keep the angles as perpendicular as i can, but if you have to let a lot of line out to get down, and the blowback pushes everything behind your the angle gets smaller and the weight and leader start to get closer.   if the leader twists, try a swivel halfway. it works very well. i use SD Jam knots.
+1

I like 12-16 oz of lead for halibut trolling. Vertical line = fewer tangles. I also like to use wire spreaders instead of 3-way swivels (Luhr Jenson wire trolling spreaders). The spreaders don't do much for you once your rig is lowered into the water and you're trolling (the heavy lead and the drag of your bait/lure handle that for you), but I find they make if much easier to avoid annoying tangles while your gear is out of the water, or while you've got a fish hanging.

General Talk / Re: Not happy about my recent Dakota Lithium order

I have a Noqua right now, and it’s doing fine. Not sure it’s the “best”, but it’s working so far. I’m being very careful with the connectors, and bought the sacrificial extra cord thingy to hopefully buy myself more time.

CA Regulations / Re: Question about Duxbury Reef SMCA
« on: May 10, 2022, 05:44:34 PM »
I agree with Soleman. The visibility is usually very poor right around Duxbury Reef, and it’s a rather hazardous area (random breaking waves around the reef and surrounding pinnacles).

It’s also just not a very great rockfish/lingcod spot if you ask me. I pick up the occasional RF/lingcod while trolling for salmon in that area, (and I have a few spots where I can consistently pick up a couple fish for dinner), but it’s a usually a slow pick.

I suggest looking elsewhere.

Not surprised you got the same “quality” of customer support that I did, but sorry to hear you had to go through it!

General Talk / Re: A word of caution: NTM infections
« on: April 18, 2022, 05:09:13 PM »
I read an article about something very similar that happened in Socal- just spent 15 mins looking but cannot for the life of me find it... it was 2 commercial fishermen, fishing rockfish out in san diego. they had been out at one reef for a few days and then started having similar symptoms of mobility and joint issues, inflammation, and then eventually it got pretty serious as you're describing.  They ended up going back to the reef and sampling these fish more, bringing some to Scripps in La Jolla to investigate their slime.  I will continue looking for it as the similarity is uncanny.
Wishing you a speedy recovery so you can be back in action
I think I remember that article. I also remember watching a YouTube video from some well-known angler (forget…) who went through something much like you describe after getting stuck by a rockfish. I think he said he nearly lost his finger?!?

Man… I’m glad they seem to have figured out what’s up.

I had a similar situation, but thankfully it wasn’t an infection in my case.

I was doing some yard work and managed to stick a cactus needle deep into into my knuckle. I pulled it out, but I could tell by looking that the tip of the needle that it had broken off. The pain was gone after a day so, stayed gone for several days, then it came back with a serious vengeance so I went in to Kaiser. My whole finger had swelled up to the point that I could hardly bend it and it hurt like hell. I kept telling the doctors that I KNEW there was something still in there, and they kept telling me to soak, rest, ice, etc, and it should get better.

Finally they did did an ultrasound about a month and a half later l, and saw something suspicious. Long story short, I went in for surgery and they found the tip of the cactus needle securely embedded in my tendon. Once it was removed, my finger healed up good as new (plus an X shaped scar on my knuckle from the incisions and stitches).

Pay REALLY close attention if you think a spike of any sort has penetrated deep enough to hit a tendon/joint (or the membranes that protect them). It can get bad quick!

Wishing you a quick recovery!
