I might be spending the weekend at moms in Santa Cruze for the weekend. Is there anything to fish for this time of year?

perch...

or dive for rock fish in Monterey area.

Or crab north of SC?

from BSM
"Jan. 7
The fishing for crab is still going well for the anglers fishing here in Santa Cruz in 180-220 feet of water. There has been rumors of Sea bass near Monterey where they were before. There has been some deep water Market Squid near 4 Mile Beach near the crab area. There have not been any reports of fish due to lack of anglers. The Surf Perch bite is going well for anglers working the deep holes near the rivers mouths. "

The swell is UP this wknd, but its WNW so the Santa Cruz side of the bay s/b more protected. But honestly, I wouldn't bother w/the yak. Either surfperch from like Rio del Mar up to New Brighton or steelhead in the San Lorenzo or sharks&rays in Moss/the slough. Or I guess bass @ Pinto lake if you need to splash the yak.

there's no fish anywhere near Santa Cruz, Capitola and New Brighton....trust me  :smt002 You're better off just jogging down the beach with your speedos on. (Ask Yakuza) :smt003

Heard there is a bunch of smelt near the wharf if ya just feel like catching bait off a pier.
