So I experimented on a "Dry-Butt System" (DBS) on a couple of my trips to Monterey - a cheap and simple way!

Buy a cheap pair of water proof - seam sealed rain pants (I got an $8.00 pair made by Helly Hansen at an REI sale) Cut the legs off the pants and turn them into knee-high shorts and wear 'em over your farmer john wetsuit.......and your butt stays dry and comfortable  :kick

With my patented DBS, you can just wear the "short" rain pants by itself on the local lakes as well  :smt002

...now I just need to work on some "aloha" designs  :smt007

I tried your "DBS" earlier this year.  Those Helly Hansen rain pants look perfect for the job, but mine must have had a bad seam because my butt got wet every time.   I returned them back to REI, but if I can find another pair for $8, I'd be willing to try'em again... even if I had to goop the seams to make them more waterproof.

Sounds like a nasty trick question :smt018 .... but any water that collects on the seat pad seeps up through the seam of the rain pants if it's not sealed properly.

Garage sale neoprene waders. You will look like a dude entering a yodeling contest once you cut them into shorts, but I have found they keep my butt warm and dry. I especially like them in the late spring when it is warm enough to wear just shorts, but still not warm enough to be sitting in a puddle all day.

Excellent idea.   It's comfort before vanity for me. Garage sales.... here I come!

I bought a pair of MITI Paddle pants and have been dry ever since.  They're kinda pricey but the comfort makes them worth the investment.  As an added bonus I can get away without the farmer john most of the time and I don't get the Ballerina Legs effect.

Art - I have the paddle pants too but the problem I had with those is that when I side saddle or simply straddle my legs on the water (which I tend to do a lot), I always had to pull the pant legs up towards my knee so the water did not creep in.

I do like Tote's idea about cutting up some old neoprene water poof waders and turn them into shorts :smt023 That's definitely another way to go! The plus side to that is that the waders provide more padding on the butt - for better comfort on long days on the water. Thanks for that tip Mike!

Yeah, I still get a little water seeping through the ankle cuffs when doing the same things but its usually not that bad.  On the other hand I have fished in board shorts and had them collect water from the footwell when my legs were completely stretched out......then when I picked my legs up they scooped all the water up and sent it straight up my shorts......not the best feeling
