This is tough to read, but this is what life is.  I send positive energy to Greg and his family.  Jim, keep us posted and I wish strength to you.

Pretty heartbreaking, Jim. My thoughts and prayers go out to Greg, his family, and his friends.

Greg passed away this morning.

This is from his Dad's blog:

"Greg passed early this morning. Vicki and I were with him, and he slipped away very peacefully. We have not scheduled a service, yet. I cannot thank you all enough for the support and kindness that you have shown to Greg and to us."

Thank you all for your good vibes and positive energy...I know that he is in a better place now and does not have to suffer anymore.

Sincerely,

Jim

There was an article in the Sentinel yesterday about Greg's battle:

http://www.santacruzsentinel.com/education/ci_22446400/soquel-resident-greg-melendy-loses-battle-leukemia-25

We (the Santa Cruz chapter of Team in Training) have also established a memorial page for Greg for anyone who wishes to donate to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society in Greg's honor.

I will be on the Team this season as a Captain to suport participants, mark courses etc but will not be fundraising myself. Any donations I happen to receive will be posted onto Greg's website.

This is from his Dad's blog:

Quote
Some people have asked about charities that Greg favored. Here are some that I think he would like:

Camp Okizu
http://www.okizu.org/donate
"Cancer Camp" Both cancer patients and siblings are welcomed here. It is a big deal because it is a place where everyone understands the trauma that each is experiencing.

Jacob's Heart
http://jacobsheart.org/
This is an excellent organization that serves the Central Coast area. It provides both services and support.

Santa Cruz LLS Team in Training
http://pages.teamintraining.org/sj/rnr13/gmelendy
I think this is sort of like Greg entering a marathon. Maybe someone will carry his ashes? Anyway, you could also donate to any of the many Santa Cruz LLS TnT participants who are actually training hard for their events. Greg's association with TnT was very rewarding for him, in addition to their collecting donations used to fight leukemia.

Soquel High Music Scholarship fund (in honor of Greg Melendy)
SHS music was an important part of his high school career. You can't go wrong with this - you can help a budding singer, and also attend their excellent performances. I don't have a web link for this yet, but will put one up when I get it.

First Descents
https://firstdescents.org/donate
Greg attended First Descents in Colorado after his first course of treatment. It was the best time he had experienced since diagnosis.

Make-A-Wish
https://secure.wish.org/local/025-000/?ProductID=C-DO02-01
Patricia Wilson (SF director) saw Greg's application and chose to handle it herself. She graciously explained to Greg how important it was to choose a wish that fulfilled his dream, not someone else's. He really did want to support the SHS music program in the best way possible.

Sincerely,

Jim
