Well a PA 14 is 145.5 lbs, so that 117 lb weight isn't that bad for what you are getting. I'd like to check one out.

I'm interested to see how hobie responds to all the different manufacturers having a drive with reverse.  Will they act like it doesn't exist?  Will they make one themselves?  Or will they make one and dump the current style completely.  Interesting to see what comes in the next few years

One of the pros to the mirage drive is that parts are user replaceable. On the propel drive and old town unit looks like if something breaks then the whole drive would need to be shipped to the manufacter to fix.

The drive unit looks very much like a Sea Cycle drive. Meyers Boat Co. in Michigan owns Sea Cycle and their pontoon hulls driven by a Sea Cycle pedal drive. Made in USA. They use a "twisted chain" system instead of a gearbox to change the direction of rotation to the prop from the cranks. Relatively simple in design so will have minimum mechanical issues. As I see it the benefit over the Hobie is having reverse. Continuous rotation is more efficient in energy use than the push push of a Mirage Drive. Less fatigue over distance sort of thing. Hobie fins can be used in shallower water and they do have a lot of torque for short speed bursts. As was mentioned, repairs are fairly easy with the Mirage. I'm still thinking about setting up a glass SIK with a full rotational pedal drive but $800 or $900 bucks is more than I want to pay for an experiment.

Hobie is coming out with reversible mirage drive next year. Looks pretty cool.

cool- I'd buy it--  I might buy it--I need to see one and maybe try one -but I like it more than others I've seen/thought about buying..just to not look like a tuna from under would be cool...lot of nooks and crannies to soak up that stink and looks like lots of stuff that can break off or corrode in time ...weight??-non issue--two trips--carry it easy...maybe  :smt003

wasted space here and there maybe?looks cramped???

looks COOL

Must say it's interesting to see some of the comments on the new Predator PDL.  Reminds me of when people believed if you drove a car over 20 MPH it would kill you, tomatoes were poisonius, and the earth was flat.

Try one out before you trash talk it - you may be surprised how much you like it - I was.  Sold my Hobie Tandem Island and upgraded to the Predator.  So far so good.  Hobie now has some serious competition.

I dunno. 117 lb is a good weight for an eating pig, but a boat that weight needs a trailer and a ramp to launch.
