My GF and I rode over there last weekend and saw a half dozen boats selling them on the pier up the road.  I thought of buying some, but I really don't feel like cleaning out crab smell out of the "King."  I saw one guy who had a home made rack made for his motorcycle to carry a narrow but tall cooler so he could haul crabs home in.  I have a luggage rack on the back of my cycle and an old playmate cooler, and some tie down strapps, I can see some crab hauling going on, or for that matter any other fish.

Gearing Up and Rigging Up / Dog Springs
« on: December 04, 2008, 06:12:52 PM »
I have come to the conclusion that Penn Dog Springs are evil hell spawn devices created to drive me mad.  I had posted my brother-in law gave me a bunch of old Penn Reels and one Ocaen City.  After reading several of Alan Tani's posts I looked at it and said, hmm I can handle this. So I ordered some drag disks and metal washers and set about taking apart the Del Mar 285. Old and dirty but nothing impossible. I clean it up and put it back together again, and zing there goes the dog spring, I find it, zing there it goes again, thrid attempt lost forever.  So next I try the 155, I have to say whoever said use "CLR" was right on the money, I let the corroded parts soak in and it came out great, lube it up and put it back together again and kaping (different style spring, so different noise) and now that spring is gone forever ( I have a dark carpet, crappy eyesight and when something hits the floor  that small, forget it), I crawl around for half an hour before I call thesearch over and realise it is a $.75 spring.  So I take a look at all the reels look up the part numbers and order about 3-4 of each. I know this sounds stupid, but I believe in Murphy's law, and the one thing I know for certain, if I have a glut of springs I will never lose another because I have so many spares, because Murphy said so.  Next time I will lose some other little part but it won't be a dog spring.

Alan if your out there, you have Zen patience to deal with those damn dog springs day in and day out!  By the way, any chance you have a pic or two of how to put in those 155 Beachmaster Dog Springs?  They are kind of funky, the one I took out was bent in half, the replacement ones come straight.

Mooch,

That sucks!

I traveled a lot for my previous job and still do a little for this one I ahve now.  One thing Ihav enoticed and it would heed most of you is to look at your credit card reciept closely.  A lot of small companies have never upgraded their machines and still show your complete credit card # on them.  Some will keep your copy blank but their copy has it on it.  Keep the one with your number or scribble it out if you have to give them their copy.  Also never leave gas pump receipt lying around, get it everytime!  It is a sign of the times.

Bluekayak, stop talking about sharks and go answer my darn salmon trolling questions!
I want to know how much line to start with, and what you do after 30 minutes of
not catching anything. If you would stick to the knitting we wouldn't be getting in trouble here!

okay, for the rest of you:

I scared Abking? wow!   :smt004

For myself, I intend to fish pretty much every spot except the aNo island itself.
And that's mainly because those pinnipeds stink and those darn pelicans
poop on you.

So Bill, I'll see you out there,  :smt006.

But I agree with Mooch. There will be an encounter in the next 5 years. I'll lay
money down on that one. And it's speculation but common sense says there are more sharks.
The number of attacks is definitely on the increase. Bill you make a mistake when you look at
the last 150 years. try looking at just the last two!

I think there are more sharks out there these days due to protection and a more
healthy ecosystem. 20 juvenile (5ft) white sharks were sighted feasting on grunion just
a few years ago. for example.

There are quite a pile ofnewbs paddling out on cute primary colored plastic boats to fish, me
included, and also a few burly outdoorsmen types like abking and bluekayak and scwafish among others.
but we are all on a collision path with the protected and increasing GWS.

Will the enounter be fatal when it happens? I doubt it. If you see the fish first,
then either it's a driveby or maybe you get bumped or the fish nibbles on
the front or back. In that scenario, you are probably okay. In the other case where it
does the polaris missle attack on you because you look like a nice thing to eat,
well hopefully you don't get bit or impacted too bad. The shark probably won't
come back after it figures out it made a mistake and hit a plastic imitation of something
good to eat. Either way you stand a good chance of avoiding direct munchification.

So that's why I'm going fishing. Cause I think I'll live through whatever happens.

But you never know.

(I'd really like to know the details on this kayak death in 1989 in malibu).

Unlike scallen, I feel safer on a 15foot kayak even 3 miles out than I do
on a 6'6" hunk of foam sunk up to my sternum, at least as far as the survivablity goes.

I also don't use a radio, a gps, a pfd, file a float plan and I fish alone at times. hey I
surf, it's no worse than that.  I might get a compass tho.

But I have some limits.

I probably won't ab dive. Randy Fry's head washed up 3 days later. somebody
found it while walking the beach. my head gets bitten off, I want to be in
deep water where they never find it.

I cringe watching a newb or kid head out into danger unawares.

I got two boys and they aren't doing anything too crazy until they are old enough to tell me
to eFF off.

more scary stories:

My parter in my company is 45 and has lived in the area for 45 years, windsurfing a number of
them and even having a windsurfing store in berkely.

he claims the distinct pleasure of seeing 3 GWS up close and personal:

1. davenport. small, 12 foot. while windsurfing.

2. natural bridges. huge. bus-like. while windsurfing,
went directly over it. he windsurfs less now.

3. new brighton. surfaced right near shore and scared
the bejeezus out of people for miles. this was about 30 years ago.

How many degress of Kevin Bacon do you have to go to get to a GWS witness?

How about a follow up to those turkey's everyone did?

Mine: This was a multi-day project, picked up the bird at the Moffet Commisary on Saturday. Defrosted it over Monday-Tuesday. Brined it overnight Tuesday, dried in the fridge Wednesday (after brining the bird if you leave it on covered in the fridge it dries the skin out so it is crispy when you do it later.)  We took the bird up to GF's Brothers house, and I set up the Weber with rotissierie, and Smokentor 1000 (got to be the cheesiest name for a device, but the damn thing works great).  Using lump charcoal and applewood chips I smoked/slow roasted the bird  for 6 1/2 hours till it got to 175 degrees.  Now because it seems everyone in her family loves dark meat, I also did 4 turkey thighs in my Brine solution, and smoked them on Wednesday.  Everything came out great, super moist great smoke ring, lots of compliments.  Two problems, one: the camara batteries went dead the moment I got near the grill.  Two: what do you do for an encore? The bird went over so well her cousin who also swears by his Weber, is now looking for the Rotissierie.

I started riding to work a few times a week to work.  I have a Cannodale F4 MTB and love it.  I had always had cheaper bikes and were never happy with them, this shifts really smoothly.

Try soaking your chips in water, wine, beer, experiment see what works best.  Try using the damper to regulate your heat. if your smoker doesn't have a thermometer, I highly recommend one.  They are easy to install and make life at the grill/smoker a lot easier.

I just pulled some turkey tighs off after three hours, pretty as can be, oh and tasty too!

I am glad everything came out okay!

When I lived in south Carolina I worked a few football games, I always hated those, you have thousand of parents on edge. Some, not all, acting dumber than dumb while your trying to asses what is wrong.  Now bull riding, now that is a fun event to work.  I used to wince in pain and those guys would just shrug it off.  WWE same thing.  Religous concerts....you can't pay me enough to work another one of those, people get full of the "sprit," and they are down right mean!

I noticed you had a plate to go under that, did that come with it?

Every Scotty I have gotten just comes with out that.  I have taken to using a stainless fender washer.  Fender washers are can be two to three times the size of a regular washer so it won't pull through under stress.  You can find galvanized ones at home depot, or hit a nut and bolt store and they should have them in Stainless. I had a shop where I lived in Texas and it was easy to get stainless hardware there.  Also because of the recent truck break in I had, I am looking hard at safety torque screws in higher grades for bolting things in place.  Stainless tends to be a soft metal.

An alternative is to Beer Can that bird, I have done a 12 pounder using a Fosters sized can (it has to big and wide, fosters cans seem to fit the bill easiest).  Cut the top off, pour half the beer in a pan (or a Pyrex pan if doing it in the oven).   The other half stays in the can, throw a spoon ful or two of the seasoning in the can as well. Three hours at 350 does it nicely, make sure to prop the can upright or it can fall over.

Some points:

1. I pull the neck skin over the top of the bird (chicken or turkey doesn't matter)
2. rub the bird well
3. If grilling place the water pan on the lower grate and surround the pie pan with charcoals both lit and unlit (this extends your cooking time by already having those unlit coals in there so you don't hav eto keep opening the the lid.

4. Measure the height of your bird, to make sure you can close the lid. Or better yet measure the height than look for a bird that will fit.

5. Using both the upper and lower vents adjust your heat to 350 degrees ( I use my grill all the time, so I am Know where that spot is, you may have to paly with it).

6.   Keep the center of the can over the center of the pie pan and all will be well.

7. Injecting or brining the bird, your call I have done both and done it without and found injection tends to bleed out, brining is okay, but make sure you dry the bird out for a 8-12 hours so the skin crisps up.

8.  Tie off the legs and wings

9. Once removed from the grill let bird stand for ten-15 minutes so it can reabsorb all of its juices.

10.  When carving this guy up remember it will be juicy so cut over the sink or have some towels ready because it can over load the troth in the cutting board and make a greasy mess.
