I point the rod backwards, thumb the spool and start peddling in whichever direction makes sense.  I'm sure there is something stupid in the way I break off, but it is fast, the force from the break is distributed across the long axis, and I don't need to take out any special equipment, wrap braid or deal with slack braid wrapping around the rod tip.

When paddling I put the rod tip down, thumb the spool and pull up with a swell.  Surprisingly, I have never lost a rod doing this.

I don't use the gaff wrap, since I like to use my Eric Kunz Albion Open gaff, and I would die a little if the braid were to slip and cut into the handle material.

Eh Bruddah,
I make sure that I join mono at the end of the 40# braid on my Chronarch, so that if I do something stupid like snag my lute or weight and have tried everything to get it loose. , I can break the mono and not loose a lot of braid liner. It's  prettyr easy  to break 25# mono if you have to.
The mono will break first because the fluorocarbon leader and braid are much stronger.
Aloha,
Da Bruddah (Michael)

What I do.   Stopper bead on main line braid. Tie a locking swivel at end. .  Ttie 2 foot of mono with perfection loop on one side.  On the other end is swim bait. with shad head 2-4 once.

If you need more clarity image search google.
