What does a kelp anchor consist of? Is it possible to make a Kelp Anchor?

Thanks

A kelp anchor is simply using some kelp to anchor your kayak in one place.  This can be as simple as tying a piece of line around a kelp frond (I find a good clove hitch works well) or a clip tied to the end of some line.

I often just wrap a strand of kelp around my knee brace strap and tuck it under my knee.  This is fine for mild conditions with small swell and is easy to release.  Larger swell may require a short legth or line or bungie to tie to the kelp and help absorb some of the tension from swells.

I have one of these affixed to the front clips on my seat.  The blue bungie makes a world of difference on a heavy swell day.

I made a sweet one for about 10$.  REI sells tube 1/2" webbing, and 1/4" shock cord.  Route 4' of shock cord through 6' tube webbing.  The webbing will scrunch over the shock cord, so it will be 4' long and stretch out to 6'.  I simply tie the shock cord on one end into a small 2" diam loop and tie a knot, and affix a brass clip to the other end by threading it through the hole and folding it over, and using quick ties to secure the webbing together.  When you find the kelp, simply run the clip through the loop end, lasso the kelp, and clip back onto the kayak.  You can also fashion a paddle holder the same way, just make it longer.  Sorry, no photos.  Good Luck...

This is what I use. It can also double as a lip gripper in a pinch. I have also used it to tow another kayak as well.

Talk to your local PG&E (electrical side) and they have big clips that they attach to the blankets that they put over hot wires.  They're about 10'' long but they attach to kelp great!

I think so  :smt045 It's way cheaper than a boca grip. If you drop it - it floats and it's very visible. Sean / Scwafish was the one who discoverd this tool - for Mendo Stripers.

I also use mine filetting.   I clamp the side of the fish's mouth to the hole in my cutting board. then I turn the cutting board every which way
and hardly touch the fish.

basically they are indeed the schnizzle.

I don't kayak fishing without mine.  If you care about releasing fish unharmed and keeping your hand from becoming a bloody pin cushion, get one!

Mooch even proved you can land a 22 lb halibut with one.  Isn't that enough proof?

Personally, I think those expensive boca grips are joke compared to this floating, maintenance free, $10 multi-tool.
