I am a sea kayaker, but interested in fishing. Sunday, 11/4/12 was out in Tomales, following a whale. Stopped to talk to a fishing boat anchored in Whites Gulch (behind Hog Isl) They had 2 halibut in the 36" range. I did some crabbing for the first time. Very shaky pulling up a net in a 19" wide boat. Had to have friends raft up. I only did one pull, but did get two keepers, one dungeness and one red

Welcome, and nice work!

Congrats and welcome to the madness. I would only be able to put in one cheek in a 19" wide yak.

Thats good to know. Were they anchored in the channel? Another good spot is down by Pelican Point and the whole strecth SW of Hog from Whites to Pelican.
-
Not in the main channel, but in the bay, about equal with the white cliffs. I think the water in there is at least 20 feet deep, because the small gray whale we were following swam right through there. Let me know if any of you catch any buts in that area. Not sure if it would be a good idea for me to hook into one in my narrow sea kayak. It probably would take me for a swim, and I'm not sure I could do my roll with a rod and a fish in one hand. Think I'm going to have to get a sit on top if I am going to pursue this

wow some nice butts sounds like

Hey that is really cool. We were crabbing in bodega on Sunday re 4 the and had a small wale come within 10ft of our Kayak. I wonder if it was the same one.
Best,
Phil

Let us know how you do, or if others are catching. I am looking for a scupper pro, will be out there to fish eventually

Thanks for the report. Nice day--gray whale and some halibuts.

Awesome man. Glad to see another sea kayak convert like myself. I use a Necky Dolphin as a high performance sit on top. It's older but still does a great job.
