So i made the long drive to Monterey yesterday for an all day kayak safety and surf entry class with Matt of MBK.  The guy really knows his stuff.  I was using a Prowler, about the same size as my Revo. I learned how to make powerful forward strokes, backwards strokes, sweep turns and pivot turns.  Bracing (high and low) capsize and self rescue.  I capsized 5 xs yesterday 2 xs on purpose and the other 3 being a savage maniac  :smt003.  The most fun part for me was side-surf entry (what happens when things go wrong) where you stab and brace it's pretty rad.  Matt is a world-class competitor in kayak surfing.

The class went from 9 to 5 w/a 45 min break.  Of course I brought my rod and they let me use the yak for another hour and a half.  Paddled out to the Coast guard jetty.  NaDA.  One pb'er had been out all day and caught one legal ling and one good size blue on squid...I was hanging out w/ the sealions...frickin annoying really...prolly scared off all the fish...they did :smt044

Side surfing has saved me multiple times. It sure beats pearling and going endo.

good on you for taking the safety class

Very cool. I took the same class with Matt as my instructor a couple of months ago. He does a fabulous job.

Great to hear you got to do a little fishing as well.  :smt001
