Dude I love the hats too. Really like the color scheme. I'm not going to make the tourney this year, but I 'll see if one of my homies can procure one of those sexy things!

I sent my registration in yesterday. Will hats be available to purchase at the event?

Should be.

I would like a navy hat. Should I write that down on the registration form?

That will work.  :smt001

Well, we won't be fishing for salmon at GS12.  It's a bummer, but it's reality.

The good news:  sounds like Pacific halibut will be open for the event, and we're due to catch a few!

Pacific halibut ... That will make things interesting... what kind of gear do you use, how heavy of line do you recommend ?
I am still going, unless the road washes away...

I need a tutorial on halibut.  Gonna put on a seminar Eric?  Like salmon?  If so, I'd sign up!

The thought crossed my mind...  You know though - for sure - that Rob Bray's going to come on this thread and try to blow up any kind of halibut seminar I put on!  :smt005

I appreciate it, Jerry, but I'll just offer this instead:

- the Pacific halibut that have been caught at the Cove during GS event weekends in the past have mostly been on swimbaits within a half mile of the Whistle.

- you don't necessarily need gear that's any different than stout rockfish/lingcod stuff, but being ready with a large net or gaff(s) is very important.

- most of the dozen or so Pac hali's hooked, fought and/or landed during GS event weekends were not targeted - one of them definitely was, and it won Terry his first GS title.

- from GS3 to GS6 or GS7 there was at least one and sometimes a few Pac hali caught by our group sometime during the event weekend, so I started thinking that having that many hooks in the water is the ticket and that we'd basically always be seeing a few.  We haven't seen a Pac hali since...  During those years we NEVER caught a California halibut during the GS event weekends, and they weren't common the rest of the year either.  Then a few years back Tyja Taube caught a Cali during GS9 maybe, and since then we've caught some each year, with last year producing quite a few.  So there's never been a year when we've caught both Pacific and California during the tourney weekend.

Someone will hook a Pacific again soon.  :smt001

Interestingly, no one has caught a California halibut on tournament day other than Tyja's, and he wasn't signed up that year.

One halibut and one lingcod, regardless of size, wins over two lings even if they're both 40 inchers.

Working on some tens and other abs for GS - it's different this year for sure. I'm still tripping on the apparent loss of the abalone tradition as many of us have always known it.

When you stop and think about how the world would be without these special animals - or starfish too - it makes you realize how lucky we are to have awesome wildlife around us. It's almost like a Dr. Seuss kind of reality - super sea snails with beautiful shells as large as helmets, star shaped predators that keep the spiny urchins in check... These creatures enrich our lives, and if it must be the case that we can no longer capture and eat them, I will always continue to appreciate that they exist in this world.

When I give away the abs I hope that the message of conservation and appreciation goes with them.

Eric,
I agree with you on what a majestic creature the Abalone is.
I have the shell you presented me with at GS11 last year with other 10"ers that I have dove up myself.
I really wanted to do a dive with you but events kept me from it.
Last season only took 7 abs but did manage to get a ten as well as winning the $100 at Albion with a big 9-7/8".
I have my reservations for campsites for GS12 and will get my registration to you soon.
Thank you for all that you do for this sport and look forward to a urchin clean up dive on Sunday.

Released a 30" Cali-Hali at the yak yesterday,
I believe it is a good sign of things to come.
If we get weather like today, it could be an EPIC event

Hey Eric my dad and I were curious about the safety of the road. There has been some pics posted recently and some discussions of how bad the road is past the general store. The picture shows massive undermining going on from a large slide. Is it safe to have that many people traveling over it with potentially 15,000 lbs plus, of trucks trailers and gear ? We want to come just are hesitant after seeing how bad it is. Thanks Eric
