Title: Getting ready for DOTY 2018 - Any Suggestions
Post by: DG on December 08, 2017, 05:24:15 AM
Hello all, this coming year Big Jim is stepping down from running DOTY. WildernessMedic (Gio) and I will be trying to fill his shoes the best we can.

We have about 3 weeks until the start of the next DOTY year. I have come to realize everyone is not happy with the rules that are in place now.

If you have any suggestions or things you'd like to see changed, lets start discussing it now so we can make any modifications in time.

Unfortunately we will have to remove Abalone from the list as it doesn’t look like they will be legal in 2018.  At this time we don’t see a reason to add any species to the list unless we decide to open stripers to inland waters where it’s legal to spear them.  I think removing WSB wouldn’t be a bad idea.

Right now the points are from the top 15 fish and not every allowed species.  So please let us know if you think that number should change.

A lot of thought went into prior changes and decisions not to make them so we don’t want to just start changing everything just for the sake of making changes.

From the DOTY site:

“DOTY is meant to be fun and encourage safe and enjoyable diving practices. It is however, a skill based, individual competition, and an excellent tool to help hone your hunting abilities.”

I have met some great diving buddies participating in DOTY.  I learned the species quicker than normal and dive lots of new locations.

Let’s keep DOTY fun, bring new divers up to speed and honor the ones who molded DOTY over the years.

Thanks DG and Gio for stepping up  :smt008

Got an idea:

10 pts for each time you harvest 35 purple sea urchin.
With a yearly max amount of 200 pts.
That would equate to 700 fewer purple urchins.
Must be harvested North of GG bridge in the recently closed abalone zone.

Picture proof required of course with easily countable uni in the pic.
Points could also be broken down like this.

35=10 pts
25=8 pts
18=5 pts
9=2.5 pts

Or you can only get 200 pts by harvesting 35 uni 20 times throughout the year.

If you don't harvest 700 uni throughout the year you get ZERO pts.

Just brainstorming  :smt001

Thank you, Duane! DOTY is a great competition and we're proud to have you & Gio on the team.
Antonio, that is an interesting idea. I'm not sure if the max score should be 200pts though...maybe 150 or something? But I understand the idea to incentivise harvest of those purple little bastards, and agree with it. That's just my initial impression.
The committee will take it into consideration--like any other reasonable ideas/suggestions posted here.

Antonio, as much as I like the idea of diminishing urchins, I don't feel that has a place in the DOTY comp.

Maybe a side bonus plaque for the diver who harvests the most at the end of the year, but no score on the leaderboard tallied in?

Heres what I'm thinking for FW striper, please chime in.

Each diver gets ONE entry. Hopefully this would keep the "bounty on them" from being a big concern. Divers may pursue them throughout the season and never even get one, or they may take one right away and be done. I see this as not being a huge problem, as FW striper is a very difficult thing to tackle, especially without guidance. I don't think there would be a large influx of stripers shot, except for those that are willing to devote the time and energy (much like Jim and his SW stripers). I'd also like to add a little disclaimer about ethics while hunting them.

Thanks Duane and Gio for keeping it going!

I had a thought regarding the 14-day posting rule, and would like to propose a change for DOTY 2018.

I think the 14-day posting rule makes sense for the majority of the year. There is no huge rush to post fish, because there is still a lot of diving to be had. However, I don't like this rule in the final month. It allows competitors to wait until New Year's Eve to post any fish they get in the final 2 weeks of the year. So basically, you can't trust the scoreboard at all in the final two weeks. While this adds some strategy/gamesmanship to the competition, I think it actually makes it less fun/exciting. Wouldn't it be more exciting if divers were posting fish right away and the lead was constantly switching back and forth in the final two weeks?

Ideally, I think the competition would be most fun if divers posted fish the day they spear them during the last month of the competition, but this is obviously not realistic all the time.

Therefore, I think it would be a good idea to shorten the posting window to anywhere from 1 to 3 days after harvest during the final month of the competition (or the final two weeks). This would allow competitors to have a better idea of where they stand, and would make the competition more interesting during the final two weeks. Otherwise, there is no point in posting fish taken in the final two weeks until New Year's Eve.

Interested in hearing your thoughts on this! This is my first year doing the competition, so I'll admit I don't know the background behind every rule and whether or not this has been suggested before. Thanks for considering it though!

 :smt005 I feel like I'd be suggesting this if I was in 5th too, but who knows haha. Keep in mind I'm suggesting this for next year (2018). Not trying to change the current rules for the 2017 comp. I really think it would make things more exciting/interesting in the final two weeks. Let me know if you agree or not  :smt006

Everything comes to a head at the end of the year anyway.
Since all fish I believe need to be turned in by midnight NYE.
So fish shot on the 24th only have one week to post.
Fish shot on the 28th only have 3 days to post and so on.

Tip for you bro....don't show your hand too soon but within the rules.

Buena Suerte  :smt006

I have just been thinking about the whole losing inches if your pics are not focused or mouth is open, and frankly sometimes it is hard to get perfect pictures... at least for me, maybe instead you could just submit a video of the fish on a ruler that clearly shows that the mouth is closed and shows the whole fish, and this would allow for the person submitting the fish to get many different angles and ways to hold the fish. Just an idea :smt001

Best wishes,

It is actually very easy to get quality pictures but you need a "bump board" of some kind. Scroll through past DOTY pics to use as a reference. Most of the fish we shoot just rest on the vertical face of the board and many dont require any hands on the fish to keep the mouth closed.

I've used video screenshots to submit fish before. But we don't have a way to upload vids on the AOTY/DOTY site. So you have to take screenshots and upload the images as jpgs.

There would still have to be pictures for it to go through. Video just clears up and questions or doubt people may have.
