Title: New PIF Recipient
Post by: BigJim on August 08, 2016, 11:23:02 AM
As I posted last week, one of the original founding members of PIF (Brent Pass aka porky bp) recently found out that his wife Raquel has breast cancer:

http://www.norcalkayakanglers.com/index.php?topic=73965.0

She had an MRI last week and the cancer has also spread to at least one lymph node.

They are going to see the surgeon today to see what the next steps are, and it appears she will need to undergo chemotherapy as well.

I have been communicating with Brent and he is very upset and concerned about his wife and how they will be able to afford the out of pocket expenses associated with the cancer treatment.

The A-Hulls have decided unanimously to donate PIF funds to Raquel to help her out with these medical expenses and whatever else she needs.

I have let Porky know and will work with him to get $5,000 over to them ASAP, and they will let me know if/when they need more.

I hope this decision is inline with what the NCKA community wants and expects from us in regards to the use of PIF $.

To me it is heartbreaking to have to help Brent and his family...but am very glad and proud that we are able to do so...

Sincerely,

Jim

Brent got his PayPal set up last night and I zapped over $5,000 this morning.

This is from their IG page yesterday:

"We met with Raquel's surgeon today. She will be getting a double mastectomy, as well as a armpit node removed and several other nodes removed for testing. We talked about the procedure and what to expect. A week later we will get a report and they will stage it, at that point we will meet with a oncologist and determine the appropriate treatment protocol. We went into this appointment very anxious and left feeling very confident in her surgeon. Surgery date is to be determined soon, have a few things to wrap up. As always Raquel is a trooper and still manages to be an amazing mother, even through all these emotions. Please keep the support up. It fuels her motivation to get through this, and getting through this is the only option for us. Thank you."

Thank you all for your continued support of PIF and of Porky and Raquel right now in their time of need.

Sincerely,

Jim

Brent let me and Matt borrow his Trident 13 twice when we were brand new to NCKA and introduced us to this club's generosity. I'm sorry this was needed but I'm glad he's getting some help through this.

Ive been trying to sit down all day and write something to express how greatful we are for this. THANK YOU. I'm finding it hard to express myself. Im physically and emotionally spent. Please understand us when we say thank you. In 2014 we almost lost out young daughter Hailey to bacterial pneumonia and RSV, and you helped us. Last year i was laid off for a 3rd time and now my wifes cancer diagnosis. We rely on both our incomes to survive since my lay offs. This helps so much. We also have two little girls i need to protect through all this and work and care for my wife. Needless to say, i am completely overwhelmed and obviously so is Raquel. I wish i had the words to comfort her. Im just at a total loss. Please underdtand how thankful we are, its just so hard to communicate anything right now.

Raquel posted this on instagram, and im sharing it here.

"Hey Everybody!!! I wanted to say THANK YOU for all of your love and support.  It is still hard for me to wrap my mind around what is happening...I still can not believe I have breast cancer...Your words and prayers help me get out of my head...You make me feel and understand that I truly have an army of supporters.  Thank you again!  I truly love each and every one of you!!! My surgery is on the 30th.  I will have a double mastectomy...then 1 week later will find out what stage I am...so, stay tuned...this story/journey is not even close to being finished.💜"

Its been a long stressful few weeks, but tomorrow 8/30/16 is surgery day. Double mastectomy 😔 The week or so that follows will be very anxious days as we wait for the pathology report and get a better picture of whats going on, she will be staged at that point. I can only hope for the best.

Will update asap.

Again, thank you.

My post in instagram:

Raquel is in post op, 3 hr surgery, and things went well. She is asleep. All breast tissue was removed. The bright side is they only had to remove one lymph node! 👍😊 For those of you who dont know, this is great fucking news. Dr. Chew does not suspect that node has cancer, BUT she made it very clear that is preliminary and we have to wait for pathology reports to come back in a week or so. But only removing one node is fabulous news. Well know more in the next week. Time for some much needed

I fully agree with MontanaN8V, theres really no way for us to fully express our thanks. Its been making a huge difference, were a two income family now living on one income. Our hospital copay was just over $3000.00, and it would not have been possible without you all 👍 The bills are already crazy and we just started this.

Here is a continuation of the bank statement on page 2 i think, we created a seperate bank account for that pif money, only thing its spent on is the med bills, copays, prescriptions and so on.

Again. Thank you. I can only hope for the best.

Still at the hospital with Raquel, she is resting.

Here is Mom and Hailey, many of you know Hailey too, shes getting big and thanks to you guys and Stanford we have a much better grip on her respiratory system 👍❤️💪

Brother I know what you are going through. So some advice from both an old fart and old hat at this. You know the bullshit about one day at a time? VERY TRUE. Bad days are this hour is good, this minute is good. Especially for your kids, you have to find joy every hour. Nice plant, cool sunset, look at that tree, this juice tastes awesome etc.

Worry is impossible to avoid, but doesnt really help. So whatever comes down the road, just look at each thing and say "OK, so this is what we do." Then do it.

on the pain meds, it is amazing how differently people react. Robin hates Oxy but can tolerate vicodan. Same class, but different so be sure to see if they can try different meds.

make sure she sees some breast cancer support groups later. They know more about lymphedema, and "cords" than doctors do. Robin's melanoma surgery involved removal of lymph nodes similar to breast cancer surgery. Their wisdom will help a lot. Hell after listening to them talk, they even helped my frozen shoulder therapy!

breath deep, seriously. We all tend to breath shallow under stress. Don't think too many steps ahead all the time. One at a time.

Your an amazing dude Eugene! Wish I could be more like you in these times. But im struggling. I pretend to be happy for the kids, but im inside my head trippin in reality. Everyday is a new day and I keep trying to get there.  Here for the family, but not much left for me by days end.

Anyway, the recent update posted.

"The never ending wait. Today Raquel and I sat and waited anxiously for her very first appointment with the Oncologist (cancer doctor). Finally the time came and we jumped in the car and drove down to the office, it was a pretty quiet ride. We parked, walked in and then the reality of the situation became very real, and we were both feeling emotional. We waited. Waited and finally got called back, shortly after we met Raquel's oncologist, again not a reality that is easily absorbed. Dr. Bowman is soft spoken, informative and willing to answer all our questions. He gathered Raquel's history, completed a physicsl exam, which she passed, then gave us the scoop. The cancer is a stage II. Large 5.5cm tumor (removed) and no node involvement. The cancer itself is a grade 3 ( grade is different from stage). Its very aggressive and multiplies fast.  First order of business is a full body scan to be sure  there are no other tumors in distant parts of the body. If that is clean, we will proceed as planned today.  The mastectomy removed all visible cancer. But we dont know if any stray cells are left behind, they are just way too small. So if the scans clean, the plan is kind of like a preventative type of thing, to catch and destroy any stray cells the surgeon or the scan cant see. The bad news is this requires 3 months of a very strong chemo, then radiation to the chest area and then 5-10years on a estrogen blocker. Obviously all these have the potential for many complications along the way. We have a lot of anxiety and a lot to figure out. Treatments will start in early October, first the body scan, then a chemo port needs to be surgically installed. Were pretty much tapped financially, and we want to thank NCKA for your support! Cant get this point across here accurately, but THANK YOU!

Very hard to read. You have such a great wholesome family. Stick together and keep seeking help, assurance, friendship, and anything you or your family needs from all of us. The financial burden is deep, but with many shallow pockets, PIF can help you with that part of it.

Sounds like they are on it! Having a solid plan is one big thing that really helps "us"  going thru any medical ordeal. We are not doctors, we do not fully understand everything.  We are afraid of what we dont know. I am so glad, your wife's oncologist is one that is a fantastic communicator. You most likely will have some difficulties along the way, almost certainly at some point.  But that has to happen,  to get better. Without it, what are the options?
So knowing the battle that is ahead, you can prepare yourself for the stages of treatment. That may help, it helps me knowing what's next.
I cant imagine your struggle to stay strong for the kids, and provide the glue, and reassurance to those babies that things will be ok. I have always been the one with the IV   :smt044
During times like this, battling cancer, a good read and passage is Ephysians 6. Im prayin and pulling for you and your family.

Lifes been busy, but inbetween surgeries and many doctors appointments, we managed to slip away for a wedding at Kennedy Meadows, camping style.

But since being home Raquel had about 10 appointments, a port surgery and tomorrow starts chemo treatments, 6 infusions every 3 weeks of some of the strongest stuff they have. Then 6weeks of radiation everyday, and a whole lot of hope that shell be ok through it all.

Keep you all posted after tomorrow's treatment, its 5rs long.

I am doing the 5k "Race For The Cure" tomorrow morning. I am doing it to honor my wife Raquel and her fight. I am doing it because I can. I am not asking for donations. It's simply to respect Raquel, other fighters and those lost. If you would like your fighter or lost loved one represented and respected, please leave their name here and I will add it to my shirt 👍 This is a breast cancer specific run, but my shirt will honor ALL those who have fought cancer. So please, get your names in by 10pm and I will be happy to run in their honor.  Thanks!

I heard from Brent/porky today...Raquel is hanging in there but they are struggling financially to pay for the necessary remaining procedures (immediate need is for 2 more chemos, another surgery, and 6 weeks of radiation).

Brent has kept track of all the $ we have given them (he created a separate account just for PIF $ and has been pulling it out to pay medical bills as needed) and they just spent the last of the first donation we gave them.

The A-hulls have decided unanimously to send $5,000 to help Raquel with her continued fight against breast cancer.

We currently have $16,921.43 in PayPal, and $553.81 in Checking for a total of $17,475.24.

~$1,500 of this is earmarked for AOTY/DOTY awards so we have $15,975.24 available for PIF.

After I zap over $5,000 to Brent and Raquel we will still have $10,975.24 in reserve.

THANK YOU to all of you for keeping Raquel in your thoughts and prayers and your continued support of PIF!!!!

I will do a detailed end of year post soon, but looking back I can see that we started 2016 with $10,421 in reserve:

http://www.norcalkayakanglers.com/index.php?topic=62892.msg785046#msg785046

So, we will be finishing 2016 with over $500 more in reserve than when we started the year AND we managed to donate $2,500 to young Frankie to help him in his battle against Brain Cancer, $3,000 to MontanaN8V to help with his health problems, and $10,000 to Raquel for her fight against breast cancer.

Very proud and honored to be a part of this...

 :smt008

Sincerely,

Jim

Without your continuing efforts to organize, promote, and transparently manage everything, there would be no PIF.

Hello NCKA,

Sorry for the long time inbetween postings, its been hectic here.

Want to thank you all for the generous donation. Its once again making all these treatmrnts and surgery possible and we are REALLY appreciative. I mean REALLY! Without your support most of these treatments would not have been possible. Thank You! Much Love. ❤

Here is todays update from the infusion room.

"January 17th, 2017

It has been a very long 7 months for Raquel and our family. Today we are back down at the infusion room for Raquel's last chemo treatment (provided there is no reoccurrence later on). It's a long day, typically the infusions take 8-9 hours. It's a odd feeling for Raquel and I both. Theres the one side of us that is super happy this will be the last chemo and all those nasty side effects will fade away over the next couple months. Then theres the other side of us thats scared as hell without chemo in our lives, as much as our family hates chemo, it provides a odd comfort. Its complicated. Hopefully it works. For Raquel and my family, we will forever fear reoccurrence. As much as I hate to admit it, Cancer will always be part of our life. Its been an emotionally confusing few days. For now, we choose to celebrate the end of Chemo and the beginning of hope. Next up after Raquel recovers from this round of chemo is surgery #3.

Thank you all for the amazing donations.

Thank you!"

I also recently created a Go Fund Me page for Raquel and her expenses. I am NOT asking you for donations. NCKA has done more for us then anyone, I would like to share with you our story posted there, just to give you a peak into our recent lives. Maybe it will others a better look into the life of breast cancer from our perspective. I realize everyones journey is different, but reading stories from others has and still does help me. Again, I am NOT  asking you to donate anything to go fund me, for that reason I am not posting the link, just our story. If you want to just share thr link, thats awesome, just PM me.

Read below:

"It's with great pain that I sit and write this on behalf of my wife Raquel and my two girls Hailey and Marisa. I've been struggling to put these words on paper for over 2 months. It's our reality and not one I have accepted emotionally. As hard as it is for me to say, this is our story.

After two major layoffs and a huge decrease in our income in 2011 and 2013, my wife and I began talking about a fresh start and a move out of state to Nevada, in 2014 we had to put our plans on hold, Hailey, our oldest daughter (now 8) nearly lost her life to severe bacterial pneumonia, RSV and Adenovirus. The great doctors up at the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit at Stanford’s Lucille Packard Children's Hospital saved Hailey's life but as expected we were obviously left with some serious debt. In 2015 we sold our home of 13 years, payed down all our debt and moved to Nevada for a fresh start, and for myself, a new career.

Now in Nevada, 8 months later, my wife Raquel went in for her first ever mammogram at age 41. A week later we got a letter stating the Raquel's mammogram results were abnormal. After speaking to a nurse practitioner we were assured the results were false and to come down for a diagnostic mammogram to be safe. It was that instant we knew something was not right. Several days later we received another letter stating the findings were consistent for "multiple site invasive ductal carcinoma". This letter arrived with no phone call, no explanation, no nothing. We both felt physically sick just reading this, although nothing had been confirmed. Shortly after Raquel went in for a multiple site biopsy, the drive in that day to the doctors office, we didn't speak a word. I will never forget that feeling. We were paralyzed with fear. 10 or so years prior to this we lost my Dad to a long horrible battle with throat cancer. Unfortunately we weren't naive to the horrors of cancer. We were scared. We waited for days and days for the biopsy results, it was the most awful and emotional wait of our lives. A week or so later, July 29th 2016 I was at work, at my new job and my phone rang. I answered, it was Raquel's doctor... he told me the words I feared so much, "I'm sorry, your wife has multiple site Invasive Ductal Carcinoma, Cancer" I was frozen with fear, panicked. I sat in silence for several minutes trying to respond to him. I will never forget this moment and the intense fear that came over me.  I ran behind the building to avoid being seen by my coworkers and a completely melted down and broke into tears. Soon after, I managed to jump in the car to and drive home to find my wife on the front porch of our new home in tears. We embraced each other, we were both terrified. Paralyzed with fear. After all we have 2 young girls ages 3 and 8. Were a young family. Our lives changed instantly and intense fear took us over.

In the weeks that followed we cried, we waited, we panicked, we drove around for a entire day in a crazy scared daze, looking for a new doctor, we needed help, we needed direction, we needed answers. We felt alone and lost. After a endless wave of daily doctors appointments we finally met Raquel's surgeon. We knew Raquel had multiple site breast cancer, but that is all we knew, we didn't know to what extent. After a long anxiety filled appointment with her surgeon, we had some direction. Next up Double Mastectomy surgery, full and complete removal of both breasts. Suddenly this all became real, the seriousness of the situation was overwhelming us both.

The days and weeks leading up to surgery were the some of toughest days of our lives thus far. Surgery day came and went, Raquel handled it very well, the following weeks were not easy. From the bloody drains to the powerful emotions. Raquel suddenly found herself fighting for her life. That's our reality. After surgery,  I spoke to the surgeon, Raquel's lymph nodes were not involved. That's the good news. The bad news is Raquel has a aggressive form of breast cancer, multiple site with a large tumor component.

Final Diagnosis:

Stage 2, Grade III, Triple Positive (Estrogen positive (ER+) and progesterone positive (PR+) and HER2 Positive (HER2+)

Site 1: Invasive Grade III Ductal Carcinoma, large tumor measuring 5.5 cm in maximal dimension.

Site 2: Extensive High-Grade Ductal Carcinoma in situ (DCIS)

Thus far Raquel has had a endless schedule of doctors appointments, a double mastectomy surgery removing both breasts, a second surgery placing a port in her chest and catheter in her jugular vein, multiple CT scans and 5 of 6 rounds of intensive chemotherapy. All this while still being a Mother.

She still has a long road ahead of her with 1 more round of intensive chemotherapy, a full year of Herceptin infusions for the HER2+ component, another major surgery for reconstruction, 6 full weeks of daily radiation and then 10 full years on a estrogen blocker, provided all goes well. These treatments cause her extreme fatigue, nausea, vomiting, hair loss, severe bone pain and more. There's no promises in cancer, all she can do is fight, eat healthy, stay strong and have hope.

Raquel has gone through all this, while also being an amazing mother to our two young girls, she has maintained a positive outlook and has never complained. She lives a healthy lifestyle and through it all, has managed to still work 15 hrs per week through chemotherapy. Raquel is a dedicated mother to our girls, taking extra steps to maintain normalcy in our girls lives, through her fight with cancer. Through Raquel's fight, we have both missed a lot of work. We are a dual income family (and we rely on both incomes to survive) with two young girls and we are beginning to fold under the financial pressure that cancer brings. As much as it pains me do do this, I am reaching out for help. We can no longer bare the finial burden that cancer brings. We don't make a lot of money, specially with the move and career change. I've been as honest and open as I can be to give you a small peak into our world as my wife fights to retain her life and beat cancer. It's a extremely complicated and a very emotional fight for Raquel, Hailey, Marisa and myself. We need your help. Please consider making a donation to help Raquel fight, she needs to focus on her fight, not the financial burden of cancer. All this and Raquel has managed to smile throughout the entire process.

Thank you for taking a few minutes to read our story, I will continue to update you as things progress.

Brent, Hailey and Marisa"

Thank you NCKA

Quick update.

Yesterday Raquel had a Herceptin infusion, but this time with no chemo. These infusion are a Her2 protein block, Her2 is one of the elements that makes this cancer so aggressive. She will continue with these every 3 weeks for a year. She will also begin a estrogen blocker. She will take this for a long time.

Surgery #3 is in 7 days. We had another $3000 co pay! But thanks to all of you at NCKA, we were again able to make this copay!  Thank uou all for all you do. You have no idea how this helps us. Again, I will be missing work to care for her and get her on her feet again.

I created a account just for the NCKA donated funds. Raquel has the card and it is ONLY used for things related to her medical treatment, co pays, med bills, prescriptions, ect

You can see the recent copay attached. Jim and I have spoke and if anyone would like to see the bank statements on the donated PIF money, I would be happy to share it publicly. Its all tracked.

Again we would like to thank each one of you for your kindness, support and love.

I will update you all after surgery next week. For now we must rest, 8-9 months of this has exhausted us both.

Also attached is a huge pile of PAID med bills for Raquel. Thank You NCKA ❤

Update. Lots of big bills like this one paid too. Youd be surprised how many of these we get.

Brent, you and your family will face each and every day for the rest of your lives altered. But instead of fear and loathing, love and joy. When faced with something like this, one realizes that each day is a gift. None of us are promised a tomorrow and in that regard we are all the same. I think of your family often, wishing you healing and love.

Its been a while since I have made a update on Raquels fight with breast cancer. There is a lot going on with other members, such as Steph and we did not want to write any updates as she and others were in the thick of their health issues.

Raquel bravely finished chemo as well as 6 weeks of everyday radiation, it was btutal, but she did it all with a smile for our girls. Shes been eating well and drinking lots of water.

As Eugene menyioned above, our everyday lives are altered. Every headache, every pain or sniffle worries us. We are learning to better manage our fears, but we both worry about our two young girls. Kids at their age certainly complicate things and intensify our fears at time. I often find myself, preparing myself for a worst case scenario and the conversation I would have to have with my girls.

Over all were being the best we can be. We were unable to make PIF due to some responsibilities but I did get Raquel and my girls out for a night of camping. Great family time.

Today we are back in the hospital for yet another surgery. Raquel is having a full hysterectomy to cut down on the estrogen and progesterone production in her body, which her cancer aggressively feeds on.

Just wanted to take a moment to update Raquels situation and thank you all for the very generous support.
