General Talk / Smolt release at Fort Baker tonite. YAKKERS NEEDED!
« on: June 17, 2018, 01:54:53 PM »
Yesterday they successfully released a bunch of smolt at FB. Towards the end of the dump some gulls got in on the action and made of with some smolt.
My friend Jim Anderson, one of the guys in charge of the project said he would love to have the help of a few yacks to keep the gulls away from the discharge pipe tonite.
I'll check back in later to see if anyone can help.
If you don't hear from me you can just go down to Fort Baker 45 min or so early and ask around for Jim Anderson and he'll him your one of the yakers he was looking for. He'll tell you what to do.

General Talk / Deckhand wanted for crab season
« on: October 08, 2017, 07:55:12 AM »
I'm running a slammer of a crab boat this season. 42 ft Vega. 250 pot permit. Cummins main, Kubota gen. 12K lbs crab tank. Screaming hydros. Bait chopper (yes, a bait chopper). Full galley, fridge, stove, microwave, toaster oven.
I'm looking for a box hand (junior crew member). Obviously experience is preferred but not at all necessary. This is a position often filled by rookies wanting a foot in the door of the commercial fishing industry. It's a tough job that takes physical stamina and an ability to work 20 hr shifts for the first month or so. Pay is a percentage of catch depending on experience and ability. Must be available to work on the gear starting soon, about a week (I still want to get a few salmon this week). If interested please TEXT me (don't phone. I get shitty reception in the Bolenas/ pt Reyes area and will be fishing solo next week. Zero time to answer calls. Ill get back to you)

General Talk / crab deckhand wanted

Dungeness is just around the corner and I'm looking for a box person. That means you would be the 3rd crew member.

It's a tough job. You need to be able to be able to stack 100 lb wet crab pots 6 high solo. You will work for approximately 2 weeks getting gear ready without being paid. You will work for a percentage off catch. Percent depends on experience and ability. A small percentage(around 15% of your share) will be withheld until completion of the season.
I'm not going to buy your commercial licence. I'm not going to buy you foul weather gear and I'm not buying a ticket to get here.
After the first week you can expect 4 hrs of sleep every 24. You'll probably get some, but don't expect much sleep for the first week.
Commercial fishing is the most dangerous occupation in the United States. Crabbing is the most dangerous fishery and Dungeness is the most dangerous crab fishery. This is no joke. This gig sux, but is an opportunity to get into a lucrative fishery.
If your interested post up and we'll talk.

For Sale / Blast tuna and fresh salmon
« on: September 18, 2016, 07:35:44 AM »
I know that some of you enjoyed getting some of that blast albacore tuna over the last few years. The Preamble is back and selling at the sales dock next to Johnson Pier. I'll be tied up behind them selling salmon. I believe the tuna is $3 or $3,50/lb. For those of you who would rather not paddle to the green can an catch one of the thousands of salmon hanging out there or don't want to go shoulder to shoulder with the bankies slaying them on the beach in front of HMBK, you can buy one from me. NCKA discount, $12/lb.

General Talk / Stolen kayak
« on: August 09, 2016, 11:12:58 AM »
Our red ok t130 tandem was stolen from the harbour. It was tied up at Mikey's slip by the f/v High Seas. It has commercial FnG numbers on the side. It was originally a MBK rental so I believe it had a special fleet hull number, but i haven't contacted them yet to see.

For Sale / Do you want to be a commercial salmon boat owner/operator?
« on: April 27, 2016, 10:32:14 AM »
The Dicky Bird it's for sale. My friend passed away last season and the family needs to unload the boat. It's dropped from 40k to 10k WITH COMMERCIAL SALMON PERMIT.
The permit itself is worth that. The hydraulic gear and rigging is worth that. She'll probably need a haul out.probably cost around 3k.
Detroit diesel is strong. Economical boat. I'm guessing 1 to 2 gph.

« on: September 22, 2015, 09:03:14 AM »
Quite a few of you got blast frozen tuna from the Preamble during the crab opener at HMB last year. I was asked to let you know when they came back this year. Well they are here a few weeks early and are starting to sell tomorrow. Still $3/lb!

General Talk / Prop nut needed
« on: May 19, 2015, 10:56:59 AM »
So a week ago I was reversing out of my slip when my prop nut backed off. It's an odd ball nut.
I'm looking for a 1 1/2" left handed (reverse threaded) nut with a 12 thread pitch on our in either stainless or bronze. I have tried all the prop shops locally and the usual suppliers like Fastenal and mc Master Carr. Any help would be appreciated.

General Talk / Crabzilla

Pure bragging here. I've been Dungie crabbing for a decade and a half now.  It's my second year doing it commercial and this is the biggest I've caught so far. 3.69lbs

General Talk / Deckhand Wanted.
« on: July 27, 2014, 06:35:38 AM »
My deckhand got a job in AK Last night and left this morning. I'm in fort Bragg. Not too worried about experience. Short term unless you want to stay on. The fishing is good right now and there is some money to be made.

General Talk / 46012 is back!
« on: May 10, 2014, 09:20:51 AM »
On Thursday I noticed a USCG vessel at the Half Moon Bay weather buoy marked on my plotter as an AIS target. When I got back I checked the NOAA site and 4012 was happily spitting out data! Wind speed and all.

For Sale / Deckhand wanted
« on: April 23, 2014, 09:24:52 AM »
So it's less than 10 days before the commercial salmon season opens and I still don't have a deckhand. I'm not too worried because I can fish solo, but would prefer not to.
What you need to know:
It's a percentage based position. If we don't catch fish, you don't make money. Percentages are based on experience. (Between
You will be a private contractor who signs a release of liability.
Military/police/fire/first responder experience is a big plus.
Sleep is a commodity in very short supply on a commercial salmon boat. If you need a regular 4 hrs a day to function don't apply. We usually get 4+ a night, but not always.
You must be willing to work up to 20 hrs a day for up to 5 days in a row without coming into port.
Mechanical experience it's a big plus.
No hard drugs. By that I mean no coke, meth or heroin( oxy etc). I don't care what you do on land when we're in port, but not on the boat.
You must be sea sick resilient. My boat has a narrow beam and shallow draft.
We will be fishing every daylight hour possible for the next three months. The only things that keeps us in the harbour are bad weather, mechanical problems, lack of supplies (fuel, ice, water or food) or unloading fish.
We may "trip fish" anywhere between Morro Bay and Shelter Cove. You may be out of contact with loved one's for days on end.

To be honest I'm no highliner and this well be only my second season as a salmon boat captain. Many of my previous deckhands have been young men with previous commercial boating experience (crabbing) but no salmon experience. They worked for me for a while and got experience running the gear and then got jobs (with a smaller percentage) on big "slammers". That's ok with me as long as you are upfront with me and give me fair warning
You may want to think of this as a hard working adventure/internship/foot in the door experience, rather than a big money making opportunity. It's fishing, there are no guarantees.
If this hell on earth sounds like something you want to do, post up.
