General Talk / NCKA express?

I bought a rod from yakyakyak and was wondering if anyone makes the drive from San Jose to the Valley (Modesto to Sac area) and would be willing to transport for me? I can throw in some beer of your choice and a custom made lure or bottle opener/ice cream scoop of your choice

For Sale / Awning and rod/reel
« on: June 25, 2019, 09:41:21 PM »
I’ve got a Bus Depot Awning that I had bought just before I decided to sell my Jeep. I forgot about it so it’s just been sitting in the garage. Never used, only set up once to check it out with my Jeep. It’s tan in color and comes with the free standing kit and one side wall.

Asking $120

Also have a rod/reel combo I thought I’d use for yellowtail but it’s just collecting dust. Both brand new and never used. Prefer to sell as a package but may separate if I have buyers for both

Rod - Shimano Tallus 8ft 40-80lb medium heavy
Reel - Shimano Torium 20HG-L w/ 65lb braid and I believe 30lb mono

Asking $250

Might consider some trades but I’m pretty specific in what I want. (Left hand tranx) and I am currently looking at mountain bikes but I think I know what I’m getting

For Trade / Shimano Torium 20HG
« on: August 21, 2018, 03:18:39 PM »
The torium is brand new and has 65lb braid w/ 40lb topshot. Had an impulse buy while I was down in SoCal and had a complete brain fart. I bought a right hand retrieve but I use left hand in bait casters.

Instead of trying to return it, does anyone have something comparable they want to trade that is left hand?

Does anyone have some suggestions on charters in the LA to San diego area? I'm looking at probably a 1/2 since my girlfriend will be going and something that isn't going to break the bank.

Thanks

This particular trip has been a long time coming. Ever since I read my first report by Eric, I’ve been dying to get up to Shelter Cove! Finally everything lined up this past week. I reserved a room at the Tides Inn and made the 5hr+ drive up to the cove in hopes of getting into some nice fish. When I talked to Eric I had expressed my goal of crossing off a new species, hopefully a halibut. Eric was happy to oblige my request and we soon had a plan set.

Once there, I unloaded some of my junk and was able to take in the beauty of the area. The northern coast really is breathtaking and the view from room captured all of it. I checked in with Eric, “The Innkeeper” (aka the halibut slayer) and got a quick tour of the place. The hospitality that Eric and his wife showed was far above standard and was pretty much the theme of this trip. I settled into my room while being guarded by one of the locals, Peanut,  and Eric went out in search of an ab or two. That night I went to bed early praying the wind would die and hoping the next day would yield some big fish.

LoletaEric and I had set a 6:30 meet up time at the launch, so I woke up a bit early to get some coffee in me and a little breakfast. Unfortunately, I was hearing sounds that didn’t quite match the waves. The wind was howling! I was worried my trip might not work out as I made the short drive to the launch to wait for Eric. But once he showed up, he assured me that we’d get on the water, it might just be later than what we had planned. It was at this time that Eric kind of surprised me. To clarify things, this was my first guided fishing trip. What surprised me was the detail that Eric went into about the layout of the cove, the safety considerations, and of course about the fishing. From what I’ve been told from friends and family that have done guided trips, was that the guides put them on fish. That’s it! So personally I felt like Eric went above and beyond the typical. Pretty cool I thought! And throughout the day he kept to that theme of making sure I had the best Cove experience as possible.

We ended up waiting to launch around 10:30 or so. The wind was still gusting occasionally, but at least had some calm periods. We started by trolling the cove with bait, hoping for a halibut, maybe even a thresher. Neither came, but I did land a legal lingcod and got the skunk off. The “Innkeeper” joined us just before we started heading towards the outside. Once out, we made our way to the grounds where Eric said I’d have a shot at a variety of species. Along the way I couldn’t help but drop my slug from Branson baits and landed another couple lings. When we made it to the “spot” I dropped my bait down for a slow troll. Soon I had a couple taps and then a hard pull! Fish on! Didn’t feel like a monster but it fought differently than what I’m used to. Got it to the surface and it’s a Rock Sole!! A 20 incher, by no means the size of the “Innkeeper’s” halibuts, but a new species for me and exactly what I wanted to accomplish with this trip. And it was all thanks to Eric! We kept fishing as the water continued to get bumpier. It was pretty rough out there, with the occasional roller breaking. Eric kept an eye on me though and constantly evaluated my status. I ended up catching two nice lings over 30” that I kept for the freezer. We headed in shortly after my second decent ling to fish with the “Innkeeper” who stuck to the inside and was rewarded with two big halibut. I didn’t get my halibut, but it wasn’t for a lack of trying! We ended the day around 5pm and cleaned our fish before my trip back home to Lodi.

Have to say thanks to both Eric’s for all their help and hospitality. For anyone on the fence about making a trip to Shelter Cove, get in contact with these two, and they’ll set you up!

Jackson Kayak / Coosa, Cruise, and Liska
« on: August 13, 2017, 10:48:27 AM »
Nice walkthrough video on the Coosa FD done by Jackson

Along with the Coosa, Jackson will be releasing the Cruise FD which is smaller, lighter, and faster. it just doesn't come with all the fishing accessories, but they could easily be added. I'm really looking forward to trying this kayak!

The Liska is another new kayak that Jackson will be releasing soon. Looks like a cross between a Cuda and the Coosa HD.

General Talk / Photobucket blows

Anybody else having issues with Photobucket and 3rd party hosting? All my threads don't have any pics and Photobucket wants me to pay $400/year to be able to post them.

What other options do people like to use?

Craftsmen's Corner / Plug building
« on: June 05, 2017, 12:31:35 PM »
After my Pyramid trip in April, I had several people suggest I try trolling some Lyman lures for the big Cutts. Well, after some research I found out they are no longer made and the more popular colors are difficult to find...

This dilemma sparked an interest in me building my own plugs. So, I continued my research on what it would take for me to build a similar product. A simple google search yielded salwaterplugs.com, which in my opinion is one of the better places I've found that has the necessary supplies to build pretty much whatever you want. (they don't carry hardware for smaller plugs however)

I also had to decide if I wanted to paint the lures myself or send them out. I have sent out a couple in the past and as I recall they were fairly expensive, along with taking quite awhile to receive. So I went on youtube for some tutorials and to my surprise it didn't seem all that difficult to paint. I managed to find an Iwata airbrush with a compressor and a bunch of paint on craigslist for $120. And with some old beat up lures I've found over the years, I started practicing a few patterns.

List of supplies:

wood - Alaskan yellow cedar
screw eyes - standard and heavy duty
swivels - Rosco Crane, various sizes
hooks - Owner, various sizes
split rings - heavy duty
Epoxy - Bob Smith
Sealer - Helmsman Spar urethane
Painting supplies - Iwata dual action airbrush w/ createx paints

Heres a few pics to show where I'm at so far. I'm still waiting on a burr that I will use to cut the cup shape in the face of the lure.

Also, I plan to make some thru-wire topwater lures since I ordered way more wood than I should have. More to come...
