Wondering if we'll ever go back to a simple season with no depth restrictions, even if the quillback thing gets sorted.

I think it is doubtful.  During our last meeting, I told CDFW staff that you need a PhD to understand the current fishing regulations.  The response I got was that they were trying to allow fishing with all the restrictions, and it got more complicated.

Paul

I'm glad to see these comments here. Not so much herein but I see CDFW constantly being bashed for reg changes that restrict fishing opportunity. I've been following the regs for years and (it seems to me) what they're actually doing is trying to allow as much opportunity within the constraints of declining populations and other (federal) regulations. And they do lessen restrictions and increase bag limits as conditions change. Also seems that CDFW and the F&GC are way more receptive to fishers input than they have been at times in the past.

Kudos for your work and approach.

Hmm, I didn't see Gophers comment before I posted up this one. I still stand by what I said.

Quite often you see them priced that low it's the smaller wheel version but these seem to be the real deal with the 12" (30cm) wheels. An unbelievable price.

CA Regulations / Re: Crows in Sacramento (and other cities)
« on: October 27, 2023, 09:58:19 AM »
I've got a friend who is pretty much a bird expert, she owns a birding shop and runs tours even internationally. On a recent camping trip I was bemoaning the crows in my neighborhood and the lack of other birds. She explained that's not surprising, due to their predatory nature they drive out most other smaller birds. Thinking about where I lived 3 yrs ago with very few crows but lots of other birds from sparrows to dove to robins and everything inbetween (in my track house yard) and where I live now where I have seen only crows and a lone pair of scrub jays in my yard. Both neighborhoods are similar. When I look for them the lack of other birds in my neighborhood is really significant. She said that the crows have literally taken over some locals where they live, they are the top tier predator in their neighborhoods with plenty of other food source when needed.

General Fishing Tips / Re: Kayak Crabbing with a 3 y/o

MW, I read every single word in this thread I especially paid attention to you and your daughters experience level and comfort in the ocean.

Sounds like you have all the bases covered except the one you didn't expect, regardless when it crops up you don't want to have a 3 yo onboard.

Your words on the thread so far show experience and maturity, but perhaps a little over confidence.

She's only 3, give it a few years.

Maybe a little more blunt than other feedback, but she's gonna be with you for allot of years, it's OK to slow down.

A longtime member Salty. used to fish off one. He doesn't post much anymore but may have some tips. Try sending him a PM.  Use the members section search for member and type in Salty.  I think his name has the . period. I've always found the general search function here to be pretty frustrating

CA Regulations / Re: RF Reg. Petition - Rockfish Nearshore Draft Petition

Maybe a dumb question, are you running this thru say FB where it will get a wide distribution within Fresh n Salty? I wouldn't run it on the open internet fishing sites, not sure how confine to those you want to see it but I could see feedback becoming a shitshow. Just thinking out loud.

Thank you for completing the survey and showing your support.  I wish we get around 300 supports and at least 50 people showing up for the San Jose FGC meeting.

Where is the survey? I'm happy to support this but I must have missed the link.

Survey https://forms.office.com/r/g2eDqsrW8R[/color]]https://forms.office.com/r/g2eDqsrW8R

Thank you

I tried both of those links and got a "blocked" message on both.

But the one in the original post starting this thread worked.

If all that fails you can always take a nice scenic trip up big river. Really beautiful river! Just try to plan your trip with the tides or it will take a lot more effort. Have a safe fun vacation and hopefully you can get out for some fish!

It's been years since I've paddled u Big river but I distinctly remember the tri back down was a beoch due to the afternoon wind. The hotter it is inland the more afternoon wind.

Beautiful paddle tho.

Craftsmen's Corner / Re: Filling in bolt holes?
« on: July 15, 2023, 09:18:48 AM »
I've used plastic (nylon) screws. get a size that will thread themselves into the hole. Screw in with some sort of sealant on the threads then cut the tops off flush with the surface.

General Fishing Tips / Re: Which line/test for rock fishing?
« on: July 12, 2023, 12:52:52 PM »
TBH it's been a few years since I was out. With that said I was a safety first guy and every setup I had was 30#braid main line (based on what I comfortably break off), with leaders 20 to 60 depending on where and what I was fishing for. I actually only fished salt and bays so of course I'd go lighter if I ever got around to smaller prey.

They were lucky you were there.  I have always been around water, ocean, lakes, n rivers. I've always been respectful of their power and have over they years learned my lessons by pushing my limits but always with an eye on common sense.  Maybe that dyed in the wool background I've given myself, contributes to my absolute awe in the number of clueless people out there. I believe humans are innately lucky or there would be allot fewer of us.

Not to change the subject, but I've always wondered what the logic is behind this. If a diver enters the water from the shore, I would grant that it's similar to shore-based fishing. But why should a spearfisher be able to go out in a boat and dive all year? It seems to me that non-motorized kayakers would have just as good of a case (if not better) for year-round access...

It's because they had a better lobbist with CDFG's ear. >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>, IMHO of course, nothing factual but I have a feeling. And when the exception first came out for divers, the boat language wasn't in there. Of course that part is from my not so trusty memory. As always I'll allow that I could be wrong.

General Talk / Re: The Dry suit vs. wet suit argument
« on: May 02, 2023, 11:13:20 AM »
The most common damage, by a landslide, was people blowing out a gasket while donning or doffing the suit.

I've had this problem--tore both of my wrist gaskets last year. Is there a good way to lube the gaskets, or some other approach that will mitigate this problem?

To get into my freedive suit which basically sticks to your skin, I used hair conditioner diluted with water, trial and error on the ratio, I think I ended up with about 1/3 cond / 2/3 water. I especially used to dump some on my head and rub it around to get thru the neck, wipe off excess with a towel, also washes off pretty easy but does leave that conditioner feel behind for awhile. Probably work on hands and wrist seals too.

General Talk / Re: The Dry suit vs. wet suit argument
« on: May 01, 2023, 04:38:59 PM »
Of course IMHO, a properly fitted wetsuit of sufficient thickness is a more reliable form of hypothermia protection than any drysuit. Simply based on the possibility of a leak. The chance of a quality drysuit developing a significant leak is slim but not 0. And if it does develop said leak in a shit hit the fan scenario, you're in trouble. Survival suits are a different animal.

I wear (wore it's been awhile) a 5mil FJ with a 2 mil longsleeve surf jacket, and Boundry boots. AND Gortex paddle pants to keep my legs "dry" so as not to get too cold from evaporative cooling on cold days. Hot days a splash helps. Also as a diver before a kayaker I never found spending all day in a wetsuit to be all that uncomfortable.
