Title: Collision at Sea, or (what to do when a pinhead wants you gone)
Post by: Bullet on August 14, 2017, 03:08:59 PM
Fishing off Trinidad last Saturday. 60-70 yds away is a river jet boat drifting.
I start fishing a rise and hook a large fish. It spits the hook after a while. Dipstick motors over to me, hits my kayak right in my rudder with his 20+ boat and says, "We aren't crowding you are we?" He deliberately hit me to get me off the spot whining about how he had been there for a F**king hour already, (which he hadn't. He passed us on the way out). I told him it was a big ocean and he didn't own any of it. But discretion and valor dictated that I did not pick a fight with a boat that could flip me in an instant. I took pictures of the so-and-so and then got his plate in the parking lot.
If you see the Mary J, a faded maroon Fish Rite jet boat out there, steer clear.
Be safe boys and girls.

Easy to remember, thanks for the warning.

Ass hat would have been staring down the barrel! Should have radioed the CG immediately. Next time one of us sees him, let him know we will be watching for him! :smt066 :smt067

It will not to down so calmly if that happens to me. Call the USCG and inform the sheriff. Make sure there is a documented history on this clown because more than one of us Trinidad regs will put up significantly more resistance and we need all the documentation we can get if it goes way way south.

I have pics of him, his boat, the CF numbers, his truck license. Talked to the Fish Cop on shore he said, "Gee, I'm sorry that happened."
USCG took information but unless it was a commercial vessel it is a local matter. Filed a report with the Sherriff. Waiting on a call back from the Marine Sherriff. Yes I will be utilizing  my CCW from now on.
I'll let you know what happens. The bastard broke my rudder.

In general, what is considered crowding another boat? How close?

I'm pretty new to boat fishing, so boat to boat etiquette is a mystery to me.

Reason i ask us that out in hmb yesterday, there were clusters of boats,  some drifting, some trolling. So how close is too close?  And since trolling seems to be pretty random anyway, how do i not get in somebody's way?

I'm sure the answer will depend on who is in the other boat!  :smt002

My 6th Grade teacher taught us that, and I quote, "The right to swing your fist, STOPS at the tip of the my nose."

I pray for YOU, and everyone, that this gets straightened out.

Can you post the pictures?  We should spread them far and wide.  Maybe someone knows him and we can get him to pay for a new rudder.

If they're pissing you off cause they're too close... probably too close. Or if you can cast a 4oz bullet and probably hit they're boat or him from afar... that's close  enough...  I hope you get that bastard. At least post  pics of the boat and B$!h A$$ owner...

Bullet-

You don't need a CCW to conceal carry while you are fishing.

We are sharing this picture around social media this morning.  These guys look familiar and I'm pretty sure they are local.  I'll let you know if and when we identify them.

Jens Hansen, owner of mad river tackle in Arcata, knows who did it and has even spoken to him about it. Jens hasn't identified him to the rest of us yet but if the sheriff wishes to pursue the matter, they should start with Jens.

Just when I start missing the weather in Humboldt, the drama leaves me happy I left. As the temp rapidly approaches 100 this weekend I am sure I will again be longing to be back at Wildberries sipping on some coffee enjoying the fog. Such is life.

His CF numbers are pretty clear in the pic, sherrif should be knocking directly on his front door.

My grandfather was highway patrol his whole life and use to bounce 4 oz lead weights off people boats that would troll too close to us salmon fishing in Canada.  When I was a kid I hated the confrontation but as an Adult I find it hilarious.

Update.
Sheriff has not gotten back to me yet. Was contacted by the passenger who wanted to mediate. I asked for an apology and a rudder that he broke.
He said that I drifted into him, (backwards apparently), and he is not going to participate in this issue any longer.
He was under way with his engine ahead, coming up current, and I, without a paddle in the water, drifted into him.
I can only hope the Sheriff has better luck.

What a chucklehead.

Flare gun round off the port bow, would get his attention. Followed by a few tracers at the fuel tank...but hey that isn't legal is it?  Damn so much for that, but if a flare were to go off that would draw people in. There is no excuse for that kind of behavior. If it were on land it would land someone in jail for the same offense.

I usually open a beer and start smiling at him all sexy like. Then I crank up some nasty rap music on my bluetooth speaker and start lighting firecrackers. Works every time.

I need to bring my GoPro more often now. It always seems to defuse the problem quick when I have it running and someone was running their mouth about 2 seconds ago.
Fishing with another person is good so you can always have a witness. Sorry that happened. If they deliberately broke your rudder they need to pay for it. No questions asked. Keep persuing it... at least it will make the guy think twice before he goes around ramming other people.

There really no excuse for being that close, he's in a motorized boat for goodness sake. What a POS.

The guy is retired law enforcement.  Possible thin blue line problem getting LEA to do anything about this.  Kind of pissing me off...

Fish cop is a slang term for game warden/wildlife enforcement officer.  Very common to hear that phrase up in our area.

US Coast Guard took the report but stated that since it was private vessels involved, it was a civil matter.
The Sheriff has finished their investigation as far as I know and has submitted the case to the DA. We shall see what happens next.

Lets see, I thought that any vessel under power has to give right of way to those vessels not powered?   If this is correct (Wording may be off) then he clearly is in the wrong, having a motor onboard and coming up to you.  IDK, sucks it happened and that some asshats have to "Go there" to feel good about them self's.
