Title: Salmon carcass for bait
Post by: yakyakyak on August 26, 2016, 04:44:17 PM

I have some salmon left over carcass (head, skins, belly, etc) that I am planning to use as bait.

Do they work for any particular species other than shark and crabs?  'love to hear your inputs.  Thanks!

My input:

Unless the meat is spoiled for some reason, EAT IT!!! The belly, collars, and skin are some of the tastiest parts. Fatty and delicious.

No argument there, we picked out everything we can (not just the sushi grade parts).  These are some itsy bitsy stuff that I don't want to throw away, i want to use it all  :smt001  I am sure something will follow salmon scent, but the question is what and is it effective?

I've used little pieces of salmon to catch sand dabs.  It stays on really well and the dabs like it.

Then again, dabs like just about anything.

Salmon face, cheeks are the most tender part of the fish.

+1 And if it's not meaty enough, make stock and drink it! Catching anything else with salmon as bait is like trading in gold for its weight in bronze.

In alaska, salmon is known to be great halibut bait, but they have more access up there I'm sure...salmon skin holds a hook better than most bait though...try it !

Sorry last thing, I've hooked up in pillar point harbor with some huge monster fish that end up breaking my line because on on the rocks some say its lingcod other day it's halibut all I know is they just haul out ward or along the rocks and shake they're heads in a jerking way it doesn't feel like they shake sideways like lingcod

Back in the 70s the 12 inch salmon  in the river made great bait for large stripers.
