Welcome back to The Albion Open 2014. This year if anything like last year will be an amazing time with lots of fish and good times. There will be cash prizes this year. All of you who have participated in the past four years have helped Joel and Marv immensely. Joel is only with us in spirit now and it just won't be the same. Ever again. Marv has beaten cancer again and is working and doing well. We love you Marv! Here is how the prizes are going to work:
1st place $1000.00 cash
2nd place $500.00 cash
3rd place $250.00 cash
The registration fees and the small profit from the clothing sales will fund the prizes and help to pay all the event costs. I hope. This is based on entries of at least 100 anglers. If we get more the cash prizes will grow and carry down a few spots. Hopefully down to fifth. It takes a lot of money to run the event. I again profit nothing.
The raffle will include a kayak and a whole lots of other great prizes from Ocean Kayak, Kokatat, Werner, Outdoor Pro Shop and a lot of others. The raffle will benefit Alex/ Alien's son who is currently dealing with kidney failure. All the proceeds after prizes bought and donated will go to him. My only hope is that we can brighten his day just a bit. He is only eleven years old. If you have something to donate for the raffle that would be very much appreciated.
Registration with clothing purchases have to be in by June 30th. Registration only to be in by July 20th. There will be on site registration at the event site on Friday July 25th from noon until 5 pm. The event will be at The Albion River Campground. www.albionrivercampground.com The clothing will be Navy blue for the sweatshirts and navy or white for the T shirts.

He told me the same thing. Said he had prior commitments with guest that stay for a month. He also said that for those dates there were only 5 full hookup sites available, which are now gone.

I believe last year they had a group overflow site available. I'm sure they will have the same setup again.
I'm sure someone here can chime in on what was available or you can just call Albion campground and ask.

There is an overflow area. We basically will have the entire campground. A campsite share thread will come up as we get closer to the event.

Sounds like Schooners is the place to call to book a site. How is the launch site? Will I be alright in my Hobie Pro Angler? Not much of a salmon guy but Ill fish for rockfish and ling.

Sounds like I'm in then! Ill be a bachelor for the summer while my family vacations in Alaska. I've fished salmon up there in the rivers but have never done any ocean trolling for them. That's why I said I'd just stick to bouncing swimbaits on the bottom for the Albion event.
Ill call Schooners about a camp site on Monday but if worse comes to worse Ill just sleep in my SUV if no sites are available.

Just show up to the event and we will find a place for you to crash. Not really boundaries this year as we have the whole campground. If you stay in the inner bay its usually pretty calm.

Please make sure that when you get there to register immediately. Then we can find you a spot somewhere. There is not much more that pisses Darrel off than just coming in and not paying for your nights. We also have an overflow that will be used too. They do not sell these spots but put people in them as they come. Its going to be quite a sight with no boundaries.

I am in for this year ! Just need to get my registration sent in, this will be my first Albion open. I am bringing my family for this one and need advice for a camping space , will split expenses with somebody if possible. This is going to be my 40th birthday party as this event is only a few days from it.

I think that Moose and Ariel were planning on doing a pig. Maybe you could PM Moose and see if you guys could coordinate pig plans. That sounds fantastic. I have room at the event sites for the rotisserie. There is the event site and I have 4 extra campsites for sponsors camping and food set up if you need the space. I actually thought of renting a huge BBQ from a rental place in Ft. Bragg so anyone could cook on it with mesquite charcoal. Does that sound like it would work for folks?

Show up Friday and no one will be turned away. Please make sure that you check in at the office whether you have a reservation or not. This was kind of a problem as when people roll in we get excited about seeing our friends and getting set up. Just make sure to check in. I just booked site 14 at Schooners for the 24, 25, and 26th. There are still a few sites available for those like me who procrastinated. From the best I can see on the Schooners map site 14 puts me right near the shower/bathroom and boatlanding. Should be perfect. Hopefully the tent sites have hookups so that I can have a little power and water! I didn't even think to ask when I was on the phone.
Does the river there have any fishing to speak of if you go up the river?

That map, to put it politely, sucks!
The restroom/shower is between 4 and 5 up where 'Camp Area 2' is marked, not 'Camp Area 3'.
Then there is a LONG distance between site 15 and site 16. The boat ramp is very near sites 16,17,18 (I stayed in site 11 last year) From your site to the boat ramp is going to take you 10 minutes to roll your yak to the ramp and launch. You have the PA14, right? The bank in front of your camp site is too steep to launch unless you got 3 or 4 guys helping, so the ramp is the way to go. You can tie up at your site, there is a very short beach and some steps leading to the water's edge.
Here is a photo;
behind my shoulder, notice 2 power poles. The one closest to the edge of the photo is where your site is. Notice that after your site, it's a steep wall, the road, then a drop off to the river. That is the long walk to the boat ramp. The drop off has a set of steps cut into the bank about half way between me and your site where you can tie up your yak. That is what I did last year; carted the yak to ramp to launch, parked and tied off near my spot, then hauled back out again at the ramp to load up and head home at the end of the trip.

It's a nice place and you will have a fairly quiet spot. I hope to get spot 11 again. Sites 10 and 12 were semi-permanent guests and were not there much while I was there.
Also, very tight spots. wide enough for my truck camper but since I pull my PA on a trailer, I had to put the trailer in front of the camper, no room on the side. One side is zero clearance to the next spot, the other side has your picnic table and fire ring.
We enjoyed our stay there and it's not too bad to walk over to the main campground, but if you have a bike, it's easier.
Oh, I don't think the tent sites had power as I recall. But if not, bring an extension cord and poach off the RV spot closest to you.

Thanks for the heads up. Yep, that map is definitely misleading then! I trailer my PA as well so will just use the ramp and then tie up at the beach nearest my camp site! I will for sure bring an extension cord as Ill need some power to recharge my battery for the chart plotter.
Still looking forward to this as it'll be my first trip up to Albion. I don't mind a little walk to the festivities. That just means it'll be a little more quiet in my neck of the "trailer park". I'm bringing my SUV, kayak trailer, and a tent. Whether I sleep in the tent or the back of the SUV will be dependent on the weather, wind, and bugs. I'm going to stay flexible there. I guess in a worst case scenario I still have two ex-girlfriends that live just up the road in Fort Bragg but I don't think my wife would appreciate me staying there!! LOL

You can drive into Albion River Campground and launch from the place under the bridge that everyone launches from. There will be no fee for driving into the campground and launching the day of the event. You can park down by the launch wherever your car or truck fits. After the tournament and before the potluck drive back to your camp at Schooners, cook or whatever then drive back to the awards/ potluck if you don't want to walk. See you soon. Its going to be an amazing time. Idyllic location.

Is there a limit on the number of contestants that can fish the Albion Open? I've reserved my camp site but was planning on paying my registration there. If there is a limit on anglers then I need to go ahead and get registered for the event as well!

It would be best for me to have all registrations in the mail. That way I am not inundated with paper work at the event on Friday afternoon. I can get a better read on expenses/prize money that way also. Registration that includes clothing orders have to be no later than July 1st. Registration only by mail has to be received by July21st. If he went he would use my Tarpon 100 and he doesn't own a wetsuit. Is the inner area reasonable for limited safety gear?

Yes shit happens anywhere, anytime. We take risks every time we go out. The question was, is it a reasonable risk. It sounds like you are saying it is not. I have no desire to put my son or anyone else in unreasonable risk, hence the question here. I read some earlier posts describing the inner area as good for someone without any ocean experience. I just needed more info about the conditions so I could make an informed decision about how dangerous it was. It seems to me that asking the question here, instead of on the water, is being as safe as is possible. No?

Was there a couple weeks ago on a minus tide. Guys were near shore abalone diving and were saying the current was swift. The weather wasn't bad, but even the cove was choppy. Wouldn't say it would be good for a first timer traildad. If weather conditions good, yes. Would definetly advise a wetsuit for a first timer if things go bad !!

What Rob was saying is that you need to have the same minimum safety preparations as you you would anywhere on the north coast, i.e., ability to SELF rescue, PFD, cold water immersion suit of some kind, VHF radio, emergency whistle or air horn. People go in the drink in all sorts of situations and sometimes for reasons psychological and/or physicial it can be hard to handle. The inner bay is great for beginners because it's USUALLY calmer, much calmer even but other than that there's no difference from open ocean.

If my son was going, I would stop by the local pawn shop. Ours always has wet suits. In fact mine is a 3-4 and I may go look for something a little heavier. For Albion the water I'm sure is colder than the water here. And I hate cold water but like fishing better.

The Steve Moyer was a shotgun start and it was really fun. Everybody running out into the surf in darkness. La Jolla is a really large beach though so it was easy to stage 100 kayaks and start from the beach. Shotgun starts on the water are a little more challenging but would be fun too. The best part of the black and blue is the start.

I would like to fish this but just got my yak a few months ago might be a bit to advanced for me. Would I be able to just go and hang out and learn?

Just show up to the event and we will find a place for you to crash. Not really boundaries this year as we have the whole campground. If you stay in the inner bay its usually pretty calm.
Someone that got a yak a few months ago probably didn't have a wetsuit was told the inner bay is usually pretty calm. It didn't sound like anyone was worried they were going to be at risk because of a noob. I thought I should ask the question point blank because the ocean is not something to leave to assumption. I don't know why my question gave an implication that I needed to be told not to put everyone at risk.
The whole thing becomes a moot question. When I looked into taking time off of work I realized that I am already going to the Not So Simple Living Fair in Boonville that weekend. :smt009

Traildad, this was my introduction to Albion a few years ago. there were 7' to 9' swells, i am glad i was wearing a wet suit.

there were 3 people in the water that day including Victor and Pacifico that was in the water for about 15 minutes.
We all want you and the others to be safe or at least be prepared just in case you go in.
the next day it was calm and i went fishing with no problems.

Sorry you're gonna miss it. I had the cottage last year and it's a great little place. The only negative is; you have to go back up the road and across the bridge to get to it from the campground. It's too bad there isn't a bridge across the river from the campground. I'm sure someone will rent it as soon as you let it go.

Ok. It's not on the 1st page where I thought it would be. When I get some time I'll start reading through looking for it.
The tourney is on Saturday from 6 or 7AM til 1 or 2PM

Those in the know, know that the tournament is actually on the 26th of July 2014. The event starts on the 25th of July at site B-22. Where you can check in, get your swag bag and also register from 12 noon until 5 pm. On site registration will be $25.00
You may start fishing anytime after 5am on the 26th. You must be back at the fish cleaning station no later than 2pm to have your catch weighed. Anyone getting in line after two pm will not have their catch weighed.
The potluck and raffle/awards ceremony will start between 6-7 Pm on the 26th. The awards will be first then the raffle. The party will then move to various campsites where we will cruise around saying hi and getting :occasion14: or in some cases :smoke or :smt030 or :sign17: or :puke: hahahahaha
Sunday is a free day to hang out, surf, paddle up the river, whatever. Help me tear shit down. Clean up at the event site. Fish for fun and huge salmon.

What is the most participants in the past? This seems to be getting close if not surpassing past tournaments.

It looks like I'll get to sneak up and fish the tournament. I have to be in Boonville Saturday evening, but I'm planning on driving up after work Thursday. If the weather cooperates I'll have a chance to fish Friday and Saturday. I'll bring some crabbing gear to soak while I fish. I've crabbed three times on the ocean, this will be my first try fishing. I sure hope the weather is favorable.

I'll have a jar on the table at Albion for this. If we all just chip in ten bucks for every registered angler we can do this. Joe is a personal friend of mine and a great guy. Swellinfo.com forecast for Fort Bragg looks a little nasty too. Swells look OK but winds are forecast in double digits most of the week. This may be another year of catching in the cove. However, the forecast seems to be wrong as often as it's right.

Swellinfo.com forecast for Fort Bragg looks a little nasty too. Swells look OK but winds are forecast in double digits most of the week. This may be another year of catching in the cove. However, the forecast seems to be wrong as often as it's right.
I was wondering if there was one site that was more accurate than others for that part of the coast. I imagine the closer we get the more accurate the forecast will be. The forecast for Saturday is looking better. Still keeping my fingers crossed. It looks like it will be blowing onshore at least.

I agree that watching the weather forecast won't change it. Maybe some people have done it so many times that they don't care if they get to fish or just hang out in camp. Enjoy it sure! How can you not enjoy camping out in a beautiful place with a nice group of people. I may only get a couple chances to fish the ocean this year, so it matters to me whether I get blown off the water or not. Add to that, I really don't think looking at the forecast for the two days I will be able to fish is "mind fucking".
I've never been there so I am not aware there is an area so well protected that conditions are not a factor. It's good to hear that's the case.

Inevitably you have to get out there then make the decision on the water or on shore where you can see the true conditions. If it looks like it is beyond your skill or comfort level, have a nice breakfast in Mendocino and go wine tasting in the Anderson valley or go for a paddle on the river. Lots of fun stuff to do at Albion. Personally, I am looking forward to the rib competition the most. :smt003

Have you decided what you are fishing for? If you want to try for salmon you will need legal salmon gear. Then you can choose trolling or not. Seems like swimbaits are highly recomended for everything else. Being new to ocean fishing I am bringing a fish ID chart and DFG regs so I don't have to pester everyone trying to figure out if anything I catch is legal or not. From what I've read it is pretty common to have lots of radio chatter from people trying to figure out if they have a legal catch. If you want to keep it simple you could probably get away with a selection of big hammer swimbaits in the popular colors. My advice is based on what I have gathered from reading this forum only so I'm sure there are many others that can give more valuable information.

I'm arriving on Thursday over in spot 10 at Schooner's. Stop by and I'll show you the color fish chart I have as well as a tag I made up and hang around my neck that has the tournament rules and the DF&G fishing rules as they apply to my targeted fish. (Size, limits, take, etc.) I also have a few swim baits I can loan you that have caught lings and rock fish at Albion.
Bring 2 stout poles and reels rigged with at least 20pound test. 50 pound is better. 50 pound Braided line is limp and easy to manage compared to mono in these weights. When using braid, tie on a mono leader of 20' or so. You can use this to tie your bait and not nick up your braid on rocks and fish gills and such. Bring a stringer to attach your catch to your kayak. Gloves to keep your hands from getting cuts from sharp gills and BIG teeth. A hook remover works great for me to keep my fingers away from a ling's big, toothy grin. A gaff is handy for managing the fish as well as your line. Much easier to reach out with a gaff to bring in your bait than trying to over reach and risk tipping out of the kayak. I have a spare gaff I'll give you too. Have a net at least 18" opening. No matter what you fish for, you must have one on deck or risk a fine. Basically, a 5 oz drop sinker and some hooks with squid or even fish guts from the cleaning station will get you some rod action. Drop your swimbait or live bait down to the bottom, crank up one to three cranks and jig. While you are out there on the water fishing, watch others as they practice other fishing techniques; casting hex bars or hard baits around kelp patty's for example. This way you can fish and pick up tips. I bring a cheap pair of binoculars to 'spy' on other fisher folk so as to not impose myself on them and get too close. Tangled lines are likely if you are in too close to others.
Since you are not planning to win this thing, I strongly recommend you do not target salmon. They require a pretty large and long learning curve. Trolling is a lot of work, depending on ocean currents, winds and tide. Sure, anyone could get lucky their first trip out, but you say winning this thing is not your goal. Stick to rock fish/ling/cabs and you'll be very busy all day and you won't have to worry about stuff like non-barbed/barbed hooks, only how deep you're fishing for those rockies! Ha!
Oh, and bring your crab pots. Set 'em on the way out and pick up on the way in. (You know what all you need for crabbing so I won't go all into that.)

If you want to be fairly sure to catch fish run a teaser shrimp fly above your swimbait about 2'. When the lings and cabs are slow the fly usually works well. I use a dropper loop for the fly.

+1 on what Jerry said. A 3# box of frozen squid, half dozen shrimp fly rigs and a half dozen 8oz torpedo sinkers should get you through the day.
If you want to target lings, I would bring a half dozen large big hammers on 4-6oz swimbait heads. Everybody has their favorite colors but brown, white, green and red are consistently productive. Diamond jigs 4-8oz tipped with a whole squid is another effective ling lure.
Personally, I fish all barbless/salmon legal. This time of year the salmon are sometimes in shallow, feeding on juvenile rockfish. If you catch one on rockfish gear, you have to let it go. Yeah, I have seen people keep them and bend the barb back afterwards but that is illegal.
Bring a fish identification chart and a Shelton descender. If you aren't sure, get a second opinion or let it go. At GS there were some issues.
If you get motion sickness, bring something for that. The prescription medications work better than OTC.

Jerry has good advice, although I disagree with the 50# braid. You may have a lighter leader, but if your mainline snags 50#'s is nearly impossible to break off. Not something you want to be trying to do if wave / weather conditions are poor. Got careless and snapped my light action Baidarkas rod yesterday trying to get off a snag and I had 30# braid on.
Most of us use 3-4 Oz weights. 6-8 Oz if the drift is fast and you want to keep your rig more vertical for better control

Bring a basket for Blackberries, we usually do a few paddles up river- where the sun is...- and bring back a bunch. It's just a tidal creek but lots of fun to paddle to the end, baby rockfish nursery.

I've been getting ready all day today;
kayak cleaned and checked out, reels w/fresh line. Lures all tuned and barbs pinched or removed. Charged up the GPS and VHF radio. Note on truck dash so I don't forget the bait in the freezer this year!! Ha!

Have not started packing yet and I'm leaving Wed at noon. Working 8-10 hours tomorrow and I hint Wed I will not work, I think. Motorhome is finally legal again though.

Got some stuff packed and found some frozen squid at Smart Foods. Confirmed that my braided line is 40#, so I feel good about that. Found some shrimp flies and swim bait. I also measured my net :smt003

I got fresh squid, fit for human consumption, at the local Asian market. $2.69 a lb I think it was.

Jerry has good advice, although I disagree with the 50# braid. You may have a lighter leader, but if your mainline snags 50#'s is nearly impossible to break off. Not something you want to be trying to do if wave / weather conditions are poor. Got careless and snapped my light action Baidarkas rod yesterday trying to get off a snag and I had 30# braid on.
Most of us use 3-4 Oz weights. 6-8 Oz if the drift is fast and you want to keep your rig more vertical for better control
I use 50-65# braid main line with a 3' 30# mono leader. Never had the main line break, always breaks at the leader. If you use a short (<6') 30# mono leader, it is not difficult to break it. Longer leaders are harder to break because of line stretch. If you are using long leaders or top shot mono, I would use 20# mono. 25# mono top shot is hard to break off in deep water. 50-65# braid will cut kelp hence the name "kelp cutter". Even when YT have taken me deep into the kelp, never had the spectra break.
The drift is going to be fast so for a newbie, 6-8oz will be easier to keep verticle and on the bottom.

I keep a knife strapped to my PFD for cutting line if an emergency comes up and I need to cut the line.

I thought there was a restriction on crabbing in the Albion River, or similar areas, where you cannot use box traps, but hoop nets are OK. I'm not see anything on that in the DFG regs. Am I missing it or did that rule change?
