The date is firm, we just got the permit. Just know that you must be out of your campsite by 12, so if you plan on staying the the afternoon, it may be wise to book Sunday night also, or you pack up and then park in day area.

The Girlfriend, Me and the Dog will be there! I just asked her 3 times if she wanted to go. She said yes. We will be there! I had to ask her three times, so in January when she says she doesn't remember me asking, I can tell the truth when I say, "I asked you three times!" Winning!

Boats will not be a problem. We will be bringing 20 rental/ demo boats for people to use/ test. If you know someone needs a boat please reserve it early to ensure they get the boat they want/ need. Victor and I have talked about classes but we dont have a plan. I would love love love to put together a rescue recovery class for you guys. I plan on surfing, crabbing, and hanging out all weekend including Monday so adding classes would be awesome. What sort of classes would people be into???

It's that simple. But when you pull your pots you want to measure your crab right threre and then. You don't need to be caught with undersize crab.

If there is a halibut in the area, I am sure it will end up on your clip. I have extra crab pots you can use. Save some of those 100 halibut skeletons for bait.

Buddies are good and beer is better! Registration is the day of the event. We will post up a roll call as thing get closer so we have a rough idea of what to expect. For now we are just reserving spots and fueling the stoke!

P.S. show up Saturday for some pre crabbing and surf play.

Anybody want to trade a spot in the jetty campground. The ones that are left are too short for my 5th wheel, so if you are in a tent or pop-up tent trailer and will trade, that would be GREAT!!!!

Steph:

I (along with a few others) have been taught under Jedi Crabmaster "Obi-John Kanobi Lyons" the fine art of rigging crab gear, including braiding line; I can help you get your gear ready.

Also, I spoke to Victor about having a seminar and he will be posting up in a few days/weeks/months/year/decades/centuries... :smt044 :smt044 :smt044

I will def need all the help I can get, i am going cookoo for crabs lol. But yea, from what im hearing a promar works, wondering how many nets you hold on your yak? I'm guessing ill start with 2 and see what happens.

Will be awaiting Victor's seminar, and I will bring my quill pen and ink  :smt044

Most manufacture PCV pipe thru the scupper holes and thru the crab pot mesh/net to prevent them from falling off the yak. depending on how much your traps collapse and weigh, will determine how many pots you will/can carry.... you do not want to make you kayak anymore top heavy that is currently is.... I carry 4 Promar Collapsable traps; like the one below....

I'm in and reserved spot #121 accompanied by my wife as well.  Arriving on Friday and leaving on Monday.

My only experience crabbing is from a collapsible net off some docks down in Mississippi over 30 years ago, so I'll need some o that trainin'.  Hope someone can post up where to buy traps.

For those interested in learning how to crab from a kayak there are a couple opportunities coming up soon:

On Tuesday October 16th: California Canoe and Kayak will be having a clinic from 6-8pm at the Oakland waterfront Shop with NCKA members ChuckE, G-Whiz, and Great Bass 2.

On Wednesday October 17th: The Headwaters kayak shop will be holding a Clinic in Lodi at 6:30. A potluck will start around 5:30 for those wanting to come early.  Promar traps will be available for purchase at this event for 15% off for those who attend the clinic.  Please bring your own chairs for the Headwaters clinic.

Sweet did you get a T-shirt online from Amadeo? No worries about not making the clinic, take a  look at this article by ChuckE http://www.norcalkayakanglers.com/index.php?page=18 (http://www.norcalkayakanglers.com/index.php?page=18) . Sweet! The Promar TR101's will need to be modified to be legal. There are some people who have fixed theirs and I am sure they willl chime in or do a search to see what they did. The best option for Promars in that style is the 102W which is alreadt leagal. Two traps will work fine. There were some people who just had one for crabfest and they did great. For Crabfest only 4 traps max will be allowed, but I will post that soon with all the rules.

James thats a good question, for this year sails are allowed if they are on kayaks, there was one AI out there last year . If it seems like its an advantage then I will look into changing the rules next year.

Depends on the type of traps you are using; HobieDave carries 3 Danielson Square Pots (2 in the rear, 1 in the front), I carry all 4 of my collapsible Promars on the back of my Revo.

However, the  for the Crab Tourny is 4 traps...

Here's how I transport them:

What happens at the campsites, and in peoples cars is up to them, but the event area itself is not the place to smoke. There will be lots of families and little kids. Last year it was not a problem. Everyone was discrete and enjoyed themselves without encroaching on the family friendly environment. Thanks for asking the question

They serve my purpose for kayak crabbing... they transport well, because they are low profile when collapsed. they supposing fish well because they have four doors. They have enough weight to them so hopefully they don't walk too much. but They tend to be a be-ache trying to get the crabs out  because of the netting; but that's to be expected.

So far no complaints...

If I wasn't to lazy to collapse and expand Danielson pots, I would use them as my first choice...but I don't like carry them fully opened; takes to much space...

The Kayak will be a raffle, anyone that participates in the tournament will be entered to win the kayak.

PIF raffle again this year at Crabfest?

We are planning to do another PIF raffle, we are still working on getting items for that. Prize donations are always accepted if anybody has anything they would like to give for that.

Last year it was widest accross the back.

Crab measurement will be the same of last year. It only take one crab to win the event.

Hey everyone.

I just got off the phone will Jill from Sonoma County Parks and she wanted me to pass along some info about park rules.

-No more than 8 people gathered at a single Campsite. (Basically no big parties that keep up other campers.

-No Fires on the beach, and Crab cookers must be set up near BBQ's in Day Use are.

-No easy ups or awnings. (She said to double check with park ranger when you check in to see if he will allow it.) The general rule is no because of past issues of easy ups blowing away.

-No ore than 99 folks for the Crab Feed in the Day use are. So basically we have to cap the event because I think we are pushing that # already.

Thanks for hearing this out and I look forward to another EPIC Crabfest!

Vic,

You should really consider setting up a Paypal for the shirt/hoodies; it's 2 days by mail, which means that if its not mailed by Saturday, you wont get it until after.

or,

take orders also at ISE....

I think there is something like a 500$ limit to PayPal when converting the funds to cash in your account.  So long as you dont go over that, you wont have to wait 30 days to convert the rest of it.

don't think so, you can transfer funds from PP to your bank at any time; once you reach a predetermined amount (i think its $500) then PP charges service fees....

Just got off the phone with my Mom and Dad who run Headwaters Adventure Co. in Redding. They are coming down with about 20 paddlers from the Redding Shasta area which should be cool. They also donated a bunch of stuff for prizes and raffles. Items include, Hobie sun shirts, Pelican Dry Cases, Waterproof gear organizer, and a few other odds and ends. They also plan on using using their tandem AI for Crabfest. Things area shaping up for an Epic weekend. Let just hope weather cooperates.

Looks like there are only 3 spots left at Doran Beach for camping. Tomorrow is the last day to make a reservation since they only allow you to book 10 days prior to arriving. Here is the link for camping http://sonomacountycamping.org/, (http://sonomacountycamping.org/,) please note you must check out by noon, so if you don't want to move during the event it is advised that you rent an extra night.

Also if you want any clothing tonight would be the night to send a paypal payment. Shirts and hoodies may be available at the event but are not guaranteed.

The waiver for Crabfest is now up on the first page. Please fill the waiver out and bring it with you to turn in on the morning of the 27th. Waivers must be turned in on the morning of the event. Each participant will turn in a waiver and then receive a ticket for Grand prize.

If you forget your waiver we will have extra, but it will make things move faster if you bring one already filled out.

***Also, on the morning of the event please leave the Jetty Day use spots open on the far left next to the beach( about 3 spaces) that is where Dan and I will be parking with prizes and everything needed for the event. I will try and get Glen to post a map that shows the area that I am talking about. Also if you see a Tacoma cut in the line that morning its me, so please let me get the spot to set up***

With the upcoming forecast calling for marginal ocean conditions, it is very important that those of you who are not experience in crabbing from a kayak, take extra precautions.

Unlike kayak fishing, there are additional factors that may add to the hazards crabbing from a kayak. Not only will you have to deal with the added weight of crabbing gear (making you kayak more top heavy), but also the fact that you will be manuevering around alot more on top of it; reaching behind you to retreive your gear or pulling up a weighted trap will cause additional stability issues; that coupled by rough seas can make a bad recipe for trouble.

Please be sure you buddy up with a friend; and use the buddy system (2 kayak side-by-side) when setting/retrieving your gear. Dress for emersion, carry proper safety gear (radio, tow-rope, etc.) and stay within vocal range of your buddy. Do not exceed your abilities or the abilities of the kayak.

Remember: safety first, fishing a close second.  If there is a call for help, drop what ever you are doing and answer the call, raise your paddle in the air if you area in the air to alert others where the incident is. If you are inexperience at trying to recover someone, DO NOT attempt to try too (unless they're life is in imminent danger; get assistance by alerting others to come to the area. Once there is a call for assistance, keep the radio channel clear unless you are in the immediate area calling for assistance; listen for on the radio for details and proceed to the area. Too much conversion on the radio may cause confusion and hamper the rescue. First person onsite should call for assistance (identify yourself clearly so people know who is the person of contact) and remain as the contact person; second person onsite should take control of the situation, until someone more experienced arrives on site.

If the person needs to hold on to your kayak, because they are tired or while others attempt to flip his kayak, have them hold on the the bow of your kayak; this will reduce the risk of you flipping off your kayak and try not the stern where you can not see them.

Lastly, If you are the person in the water and inexperience at self-recover, do not waste energy trying to flip your kayak over; call for help, raise your paddle if you can and wait for assistance. Stay with your kayak unless your safety is further at risk.

Have fun; but be safe!!!

I'm gonna disagree on that one glen, but I'm just gonna say if you can't self rescue maybe you should keep out of the water.

Will address safety more tomorrow, but there will be over a dozen people on the water who are trained at rescues. That said we can't stop anyone from doing something stupid. Stay close, dress for the water, and always have a buddy. If you don't know how to rescue please come to the safety class Saturday. Will be the best couple of hours you can spend.

Most people can't flip there kayak over by themselves and exert alot of energy trying to do so; I guess if you can or have done it before, then it is okay. I believe it is better to call for assistance and conserve your energy. This one maybe debateable if you are  a more experienced kayaker.

You know that will never happen...

I can self-rescue in a lake; but in 8'-10' swells, not sure I could on my own.

It's easy Glen, point the bow at the swell direction, wait for a swell, as soon as it passes climb in. It's a timing thing. As log as your yak is squared up on the swell, it should be plenty stable for re-entry. You can also use the swell to help you flip your yak right side up but really, everybody should be able to do this unassisted. I am not an instructor but I have self rescued in the surf zone in 6-7' surf. Outriggers can be problematic as we learned at GS last year with regard to self-rescue. Worth a discussion in the safety section.

Regarding outriggers:  I use the inflatable Hobie Sidekicks which can be easily removed or deflated if necessary.  I think this is a much better option than something that could impede reentry. They're not as big as the fixed mounted ones I have seen but they provide plenty of additional stability when pulling crab gear.

SAFTEY:

I appreciate the comments about Safety posted above. This is the upmost concern for us. Due to the nature of the event, it draws a fair number of first time ocean paddlers. Many of which do not have a self rescue. This is why we are taking precautions to make sure everyone is safe and has a great experience at Crabfest. (even if that means not getting on the water) I would like to address a few comments and explain Victor and I's plans for Safety at the event.

*First and most important thing: WE CAN NOT STOP YOU FROM DOING SOMETHING STUPID. What I mean by this is ultimately you are in control on wether you decide to hit the water or not, or wether you go out solo or not, or go around the jetty to the open ocean. Everyone has their own comfort level, but please don't paddle over your head. We want everyone to push themselves but please stick to the rules laid out on this post.

*Always three when at sea: This is a rule we teach in Sea Kayaking and I think its very applicable to fisherman as well. The buddy system is great, but when things hit the fan its nice to have that extra person to gather up loose gear and support the rescuer in any way they can. It's much easier and efficient when there are to rescuers instead of one. So pick two buddies you want to crab with and keep them within shouting distance at all times.

*Bring a Whistle: This is the easiest way to get someones attention if you hit the drink.

*VHF Radio: Make sure at least one person in your group has a VHF Radio. Keep the lines clear from chatter if something is going down.

*Stay close: Remember you are pulling pots and you don't want to have to paddle/ pedal a super long ways in rough sea's with traps on your deck. (Use good judgement) If you are a first timer, stay right inside the Jetty where we can see you from the beach. We can radio a rescue kayak over to you and in a matter of minute or two have you back on your yak.

*Safety boaters: There will be roughly a dozen or so rescue kayakers on the water during Crabfest. We will try our best to point them out before the tournament. When in doubt stick by one of these paddlers, because they are trained at rescues and will quickly fish you out of the water.

*Keep your deck clear: Don't bring an over abundance of stuff with you on the water. This makes the kayak harder to flip over and can also get you hung up while trying to get off or on the yak.

*DRESS FOR THE SWIM: This means dressing for the water not the weather. 3mm or heavier wet suit with insulating top and splash jacket, or dry top. Better yet a Dry suit/ paddling suit, with warm polypro, or wool layers under. (NEVER COTTON EVER) Having a dry suit does not mean you can wear your favorite jeans. This is a recipe for disaster if you swim. Warm booties, gloves and a cap can also make your time at sea much more comfortable.

*If you can, make it come to the Safety Clinic Saturday AM at 10:00AM. We will be going over buddy rescues in a controlled environment, so you will have the skills to save yourself and your buddies. (The best 3/ 4 hours you will have all weekend)

*Know when to call it: Know your personal comfort zone and don't be afraid to not hit the water, or paddle the bay instead of the ocean. This is not about pride, its about the safety of the group. One bad incident can mean a real bummer for the whole group. Plus the best part of Crabfest is the food, and friends anyways. So use your head and don't be afraid to ask Victor or myself about any questions or concerns you may have. WE are here to make sure every single person has a great time and comes in safe.

If you have a comment about the safety rules layed out please PM me. I'm not to proud to change them or take advice.

That right there to me is the number cause of accidents.  People either will not admit that the water is too big for them or they want to try and keep up with their buddies.  This was one of the main problems when I rode in motorcycle groups, trying to keep up.  People need to drop the ego and go at your own pace, if it looks to big, do not try without supervision.

The WX is not good  :smt011 but should be doable if the swell is not rotated west too far. It will be a game day call for me. All that said, if you are an ocean newbie, I would not venture beyond the jetty too far.

Sunday: NW wind around 13 kt. A chance of showers. Mixed swell...WNW 11 ft and S 1 ft. Wind waves around 1 ft.

I will have my Adventure with one ama and trampoline and tow rope in case someone needs assistance.

What worries me most about the weather, is everything is comming from different directions, multi-swell and wind.  Sounds like washing machine conditions.  If the conditions are too rough on the ocean side, you can always go for rock crab on the inside of the harbor.  I found some really nice ones there last year.

If its coming from the NW it wont have as much time to build inside the Jetty. I would rather have that then windwaves pounding the beaches every three seconds with a South west. Should form up the surf, but at 13 second intervals at least it will be "predictable". We will have a stong Ebb coming out the mouth of the Jetty through the afternoon. So we will want to keep the newbies well inside the Jetty. Should be fun!  :smt003

there is no wind and the waves breaking on the shore at low tide, behind the jetty are only 6 to 8 inches.

No crabbing for me today; spent the time enjoying scenery.

Be careful out there, you have some challenging conditions to deal with. Keep that knife handy and keep those lines away from you. Good luck!

I believe so; he got tired paddling against the wind and ebb from the jetty. Dan and another tried to tow him in, but the drag of his kayak was too much for them to make it all the way in...

Yea he was fine. He lost his paddle and was not making any headway in the wind with his Mirage Drive. We towed him for a long time, but we were not making much ground. I could tell he was getting shook up so I called the Coasties. First time in my life that I have ever had to call the Coast Guard. Thankfully they were close and it was not an issue.

Hey Dan,

One of the other guys who had a white kayak, found a paddle in the water that day; did he ever get it back?

Glen I will have to see what color it was. Someone turned in a paddle and I put it the headwaters van at the end of the day.
