***CANCELLED DUE TO INSUFFICIENT INTEREST***
Time to start thinking of major Springtime trip to San Clemente (Or maybe points south?)
I just talked to the Islander rep in SD. They are booking fast for this time period. Best they can do for us is a 3.5 day trip to San Clemente. Which will be AWESOME!!
Price break for us! (Cause they love NCKA) Same as 3-day last year $765.
May 28th-June 1st Thurs-Monday
(leave Thursday night and return Monday morning) Fish Friday, Sat. Sun @ SCI
Price will be the same our 3 day last year @ $765
jpg below of final 'previous' poll #'s[/b]

We can dive. We can fish from the big boat. WE can kayak fish ALL DAY. We can eat great food, catch awesome fish, and put another EPIC ADVENTURE into the books
Last year's trip was epic (lets see some reminispix). Most on the boat agreed that three days was just not enough. We were just getting into the groove on day 3.
I think end of May would be epic, warmed up enough for big island halibut and especially chance at YT and WSB....of course the goats and calico's never fail to impress us Northern Boyz.
So, weigh in fellows, let us know if enough guys are interested so we can start official signups

I Voted...
Did somebody say gratuitous Fishporn? From the 2013 trip, but...you never know what you're gonna catch down there!

Hey, I reset the poll and enabled it so you can vote for more that one. So, for instance, if you'd go on any of the 4 regardless, you can vote for all 4. So, please take the time to vote for all the options that you would be interested in going on.
-Allen
-
I would take a boat ride to help fill the boat for a 5-day Mexico trip in May or June. :smt001

Yeah that! We will be using this info to decide on what trip to actually run. Would hate to make a decision based on this poll, then not be able to book if we don't have enough firm interest at the end of the day. Thanks.
-Allen
-
Then how do you determine what the trip will be ? I voted for a Mexico trip because I have no interest in the other ones.
-
We can gauge interest through this poll. Later we can drill down if we need to. 5-day Mexico is in the lead though, it's the only one I voted for, but I'd take anything, It's all good!!
Bushy
-
4 options & you can vote for 4 :smt044
I understand ... Its still funny though!
-
Would I be able to dive on the trip down to mexico ? :smt003
-
I will say this, if we do not get about 18-20 people seriously interested in a particular option, especially the longer trip options, it will be hard to pull the trigger. For something like the 3 day trip, I think we'd stand a decent chance of filling regardless of what this poll says.
We do have the option of expanding to include BWE and/or NWKA peeps, but our immediate focus is on an all-NCKA trip.
-Allen
-
4 options & you can vote for 4 :smt044
I understand ... Its still funny though!
We didn't want to assume that if you voted for the 5-day trip, that you'd automatically also be interested in the other trips. So best to be clear about which trips are actually of interest.
-Allen
-
Would I be able to dive on the trip down to mexico ? :smt003
We've never had an issue with this before, and you know how the captain/crew are dive nuts, so I don't suspect we'd have an issue going forward.
But we'll double check before making a final determination and let you know.
-Allen
-
I get it ... Just tuggin' at the chain a bit. Hope to afford & go this year but I'm also holding out for Burning Man so...... High hopes for both?
-
Could they hold enough beer for 5 days of A-Hulls?

Where in Mexico?

-
Any ballpark estimate on prices? Interested but price is the biggest factor for me!
The 3 day trip to San Clemente last year was $765. Last year we were quoted $1650 for a 5-day Cedros trip. We don't have firm pricing for this year yet.
-Allen

Man do I want to go... But I also have to find a way to take Sara to Hawaii this year. So I guess i'm out...

The first date is during GMS!
-
Any mexico trips?
-
WE can only work with what they have available, which is added to 1st post of this thread. 3.5 day at San Clemente. if we all bug the skipper during the trip, esp if we start signups one year early they'll go for it. Lot more expensive, remember.
Bushy
-
Same wknd as Gimme Shelter 9 is a no go. But two weeks after GS9 would be perfect...enough time to recover haha
-
SCI is awesome and I'd be super stoked to do it again. I'm in for sure. Not during GS9 would be cool though.
-
Looking like the later date is really the only feasible one, with GS firmly occupying the earlier date.....
Post your intentions here, now, so we can confirm with the guys down south. We need a tentative # for go-ahead, and then we start signups.

….. Not sure I want to do the same trip again all tho it was a blast … Was hoping we would be able to go farther out and somewhere new this time. I would love to do a mexico trip :smt003. Thanks for putting this together !

I've been three times and the trip/fishing has been different every time.
Mexico trips are super weather dependant and if the palegics aren't biting I'm not sure if there are as many options as there are at SCI.

There is an un-encouraging lack of interest this year. :cry3

It doesn't look like they are doing any kayak trips to Mexico this year.
I checked their schedule thinking maybe there was a trip scheduled that a few of us could hop on, but doesn't look like there are any.
And if you check the prices of some of their other trips, the $765 really is an NCKA discount.
-
Sorry Justin, I mean Dustin.
Yeah lackluster response this year. Timning I think is the biggest part of it. Not really a good time to go esp with other big events already scheduled.
So, I think we will skip this year.
Bushy
-
Have you considered opening it up to members of our sister site, CCKF? I'm pretty sure a few of those guys would go.
-
I am willing to push it to CCKF as well as nWKA. I haven't told them down in SD that we aren't gonna do it. More like hoping there's be 20 instant replies of "NOOOOO.....I wanna GOOOOOO!!!!!"
So good suggestion I will persevere. Give it another week or so.

By the time it hit cabo, it was downgraded to a tropical storm. The remnants are hitting right now with some moisture in the forecast. Perhaps some of that slight south swell is coming from this. Other than that, it will be a non-event by the weekend.

Good luck guys. I'm really sad I'm not going to make this year. I was all set and committed in the beginning, but then it seemingly fell through so I made other plans. Now its kinda came back to life and cant make it. Oh well. I went last year and it was hands down the coolest fishing trip I've ever been on; and the fishing wasn't even at its best. I really hope you get into the YT and WSB. Count me in on a 2016 Islander trip :smt006 :smt001
Tell Jarod I said
-
I didn't take a single picture ...
But I did stick 4 rat yellowtail (3-5 pounds). Caught 2 in 45' of water in the sand of Pyramid cove while I was targeting halibut. One was caught on the dropper, so I flylined a 'dine and caught another before the school moved on. A number of the rat yellows were caught, but nothing larger. One 34# WSB was landed, and a bunch of halibut up to 30#. Most of the halibut were caught deep (like 100' of water). Lots of bonito and a few cudas annoying the hell out of flylined baits. Dustin did call me in to a nice goat bite on the second morning when we were on the backside of the Island.
-Allen
-
Awesome! Did you get on the west side of the Island?
-
Tell Jarod I said
This was Jarod's last trip as a deckhand on the Islander. He snagged himself a job as an electrician. "Weener Neck" newbie from last year didn't make the cut. Blond haired Matt (who could possibly be mistaken for an aMayesing bro) is on his second year, hustling as hard as ever. Skiff driver Mike was back. Geezer was there, as grumpy as ever. And 2-3 new greenhorns. Cappy Jason led the show once again.
-Allen
-
Awesome! Did you get on the west side of the Island?
Day 1 morning, China Point, west side of Pyramid Cove.
Day 1 after lunch, East side of Pyramid Cove until we got blown out.
Day 1 evening, East side, bottom part of the island.
Day 2 morning, west side, seal cove working our way to the south, to where we put in last year.
Day 2 afternoon/evening. Back to the East side, bottom part of island.
-Allen

It was a blast. All of the So-Cal dudes were cool and I landed my first SCI yellowtail. Even after three previous trips I learned a lot on this trip. The food was delicious and the fishing was so-so, but the little yellows were out and biting. The one I landed was a little 8lber, and I lost another one that felt much bigger when the hook just popped mid-blistering run.
Didn't take any pics, unfortunately.
I'll be going again next year.

The day one jackpot was won by a 27lb halibut. Looked just like the one I caught two years ago. There were probably a dozen or so halibut caught....none by me. Most were caught deep, in 100ft or more.

Thanks!
Lookin' pretty windy through the weekend, but if the wx improves I'm down to fish Sunday.
-
I'm gonna squirrel-away $30 from each paycheck starting on Thursday! Because I really want to go back next year.
So we really need to start the discussion as to what we want to do next year, so we can make sure to get a slot reserved. I talked with Jason a bit, and while Cedros is appealing, the time of year (May/June) that they run kayak fishing trips is more often windy than not. Unfortunately, the best time of year is in the fall when the Islander is all booked up on Shark Charters. The moral of the story is if we want a 5-dayer, we'll just need to be flexible as the weather would dictate where we would/could go.
-Allen
-
I just want another 3.5 day at SCI.
I don't think the people wanting the Mexico trip realize that trip is 3 days of boat travel for 2 days of fishing.
-
I say book the 3.5 day and if we don't fill it up here post it up on the BWE board.
That's what we should have done this year.
-
I don't think the people wanting the Mexico trip realize that trip is 3 days of boat travel for 2 days of fishing.
It's actually 3 days of boat travel for 3 days of fishing. It's 1.5 days one way with 1/2 day being the first night (or last night).
-Allen
-
Another option is to do a limited load trip, with a shot of making a day run off shore to run and gun on tuna if they are there, or go paddy hunting for yellows. The Islander did this recently with a limited load kayak trip. They went offshore looking for bluefin, because they were there and because the weather allowed them to. Their plan was to find a school and see if they could hold them in the chum line while splashing the kayaks. They found some spots, but they couldn't get them to go off the big boat, so never splashed the kayaks.
Or with our group, we could do a full load and draw straws for a rotation on who gets in the water first if an offshore bite develops.
-Allen
-
I just want another 3.5 day at SCI.
I don't think the people wanting the Mexico trip realize that trip is 3 days of boat travel for 2 days of fishing.
Wrong. It's less than a day to get to Cedros.

Whatever. You're still paying for 2 whole days of travel. Point being is that it is a looong ass trip to potentially arrive to conditions that are too windy to kayak fish in.

Well, 1.5 days is what the skipper told us it takes the Islander to get there. Different boats cruise at different speeds.
-Allen
-

That's what we should have done this year.
I want to go again as long as I can get the time off
-
And don't get me wrong, I am DEFINITELY down for the Mexico trip. I go back and re-read the old thread all the time. I just re-read it now and I want to go more than ever.....but I got antsy on the boat when we moved around the island and it took 2 hours. I'd either go a little stir crazy or just sleep for HOURS on the way to Cedros and back.
The beauty in SCI is that you get to maximize all of your time there and hunt for a multitude of different species, and the terrain is totally different at every stop. I think my ultimate trip would be four days at SCI when the yellows were biting. That way I might be able to relax a little. Even with two days there's a little bit of pressure to get out and fish to your plan and not a lot of time for trying new techniques. The three day we did last year was awesome and will be even mo' betta next time having learned a few things on this trip.
Bottom line is that whatever we decide to do, I'm going.
